Japan Display LCD factory built as iPhone 6 sales took off

Japan Display still owes Apple for half-used LCD factory as latest bailout plan progresses

Japan Display still owes Apple the majority of the construction costs of an LCD factory built especially for the iPhone maker back in 2015, says a new report.

With iPhone 6 sales taking off dramatically at the time, after Apple finally moved into larger-screen phones, Apple was keen to maximize production capacity. So much so that it offered to stump up the cash for a whole new Japan Display LCD factory …

As PC makers announce high-end OLED laptops, would you pay more for an OLED Mac? [Poll]

At CES 2019, we saw more computer manufacturers flaunt luxury models with OLED displays. While they still remain far pricier than their LCD counterparts, it’s exciting to see mainstream manufactures at least entertaining the option.

Both Dell and subsidiary Alienware have announced new OLED offerings this week for their notebooks, however specific pricing is yet to be confirmed. Ultimately, we know they won’t come cheap, and the only question is, how much more are you willing to pay?

Supply-chain report explains how this year’s LCD iPhone could be near-bezel-free

All three of this year’s iPhones are expected to have the near-bezel-free design of the iPhone X, despite the fact that the cheapest one will have an LCD screen.

It’s so far been unclear how slim the bottom bezel could be when using an LCD screen instead of an OLED one, but a supply-chain report today may have the answer …

Second reports suggests Apple plans to drop LCD in next year’s iPhones

While we’re expecting to see three new iPhone models this year, two with OLED screens and a cheaper model using LCD, a new report says that Apple will transition to an all-OLED line-up next year.

Although this is just an unsourced supply-chain report, there are three reasons to give it at least some degree of credibility …

LG will supply OLED screens for larger 6.5-inch iPhone, while Samsung sticks to 5.8-inch model, says report

A KGI report back in November said that Apple was working on two OLED iPhones for 2018, an updated version of the 5.8-inch iPhone X and a larger, 6.5-inch Plus model.

A supply-chain report today states that while Samsung will remain the sole or primary supplier of the OLED panels for the smaller model, LG will supply the panels for the 6.5-inch model …

Samsung reportedly hits 90% yield with iPhone X displays, Apple quadruples order

One of the initial constraints on supply of the iPhone X was poor yield rates on the Samsung-made OLED screens. Back in August, the yield rate was reported to be as low as 60% thanks to Apple’s exacting standards.

But Samsung appears to be getting into the swing of things, with a report out of Korea saying that the yield rate passed through 80% later in the year, and is now close to 90% …

LG hints that a deal to supply OLED screens for the iPhone X may be close

We’ve known for some time that LG has been aiming to win OLED iPhone screen orders from Apple, but it’s looking like a deal could be closer than expected.

Following a recent rumor that the company had signed an OLED supply deal with Apple for the iPhone X, ending the exclusivity of the current contract with Samsung, the firm was asked to make a regulatory filing clarifying the position …

China’s BOE offers iPhone-exclusive OLED production lines as it seeks to take business from Samsung

China’s largest display manufacturer, BOE, is reported to be making a serious bid to win OLED orders for future iPhones. It’s said to have offered to construct not just one but two large-scale OLED production lines which would be used exclusively for Apple orders.

Korean report claims Apple plans 6-inch-plus LCD iPhone for 2018

The OLED iPhone X has been described by Apple as the future of the phone, but a Korean report claims that Apple isn’t yet done with launching all-new LCD models.

It claims that next year’s line-up will include a brand new screen size. That might not be surprising if it were suggesting a new OLED model, but this one is said to have an LCD screen …

Samsung OLED production lines dedicated to iPhones ramping up to full capacity

Samsung is ramping-up manufacturing volumes on seven separate OLED production lines dedicated to panels for the iPhone 8, according to a Korean report. While the panels are described as ‘flexible,’ this simply refers to the type of screen needed for an edge-to-edge display.

The report says that full-scale production will begin later this month, with output capacity increasing by 700% …

Apple reportedly paying LG $2.7B for OLED production line exclusively dedicated to iPhone screens

It was reported earlier this month that Apple was close to striking a deal where it would make a large upfront investment in LG’s OLED production lines in return for output being exclusively devoted to iPhone screens.

A fresh report today supports this, and claims to have more detailed information on the as-yet-unannounced arrangement …
