Review: HP Tango X, an AirPrint printer that tries to look like a book

HP Tango X review

While I try to live a paperless life, it’s not quite possible to get away from the stuff entirely. For example, returning packages mostly means printing a label (though there are some exceptions now), and there are still a few companies that insist on etickets being presented in paper form.

But when you only print a handful of pages a month, it doesn’t make sense to have a large printer – nor one that draws attention to itself. So I was curious to try the HP Tango X, a compact AirPrint-compatible printer which does its best to disguise itself as a book when not in use …

iOS 8 How-to: Print wirelessly from iOS device

Sometimes you may need to print something from your iOS device. In this how-to article I will discuss how to wirelessly print from your iOS device.

First of all you need an AirPrint compatible printer. Apple does not make printers. Brother, Canon, Dell, EpsonHP, Konica Minolta, Kyocera, Lexmark, Samsung, and Zink offer a variety of AirPrint printers differing on printer speed, printer resolution, type of cartridge and functionality. For a complete list of AirPrint compatible printers, visit Apple’s support page. You also need to make sure that your iOS device is connected to the same Wi-Fi network as your printer.

Microsoft hits iPad again, this time about hardware specs, multitasking, printing

[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zgu9uo2UpPg?rel=0]

Following up on its ad from yesterday claiming that the iPad is not a productivity device, Microsoft has posted a new ad pitting Windows 8 tablets against the iPad. Today’s ad focuses on expressing that Windows 8 tablets are better productivity devices with the full Microsoft Office suite rather than just OneNote and multitasking capibilities. Additionally, the Redmond-based company pits a single ASUS tablet’s weight and thinness against the iPad. Additionally, Microsoft shows how that single ASUS tablet includes an SD card reader, and the company claims that Windows 8 printing is more versatile than Apple’s AirPrint. Thanks, Matthew!

Chrome for iOS gets updated scroll, AirPrint/Cloud Print and save PDF to Google Drive options

Google updated its iOS browser today with a number of fixes and feature improvements. Notable changes include the ability to save webpages as PDFs in your Google Drive account or print web pages to either Google Cloud Print or AirPrint printers.

iPhone and iPod touch users can now go full screen in Chrome giving you access to more of the web page. Perhaps most interesting is a new scroll feature that lets you scroll the toolbar off the page and then scroll back to get the Omnibar again.

Also Google says it has done some  stability / security improvements and bug fixes.

PayPal Here version 1.2: While noting it is aware of an issue with the display of refunded transactions, PayPal updated its PayPal Here app for accepting credit card and PayPal payments on the iPhone. Improvements in the update include longer time allowed between login, multiuser support (setup on paypal.com), improved Star printer, AirPrint, HP ePrint support, and a number of other new features and fixes.

Evernote for Mac version 3.2: Evernote announced in a blog post that it is releasing an updated version of its Mac client today that includes Retina support for the new MacBook Pros, a new Activity Stream feature, faster sharing, and “more reliable sync.” The update is currently only available through the developer’s site, but Mac App Store users can follow these instructions to complete the update.

Netgear announces 5G 802.11ac Wi-Fi router, speeds to 1.3Gbps!

We’ve talked about next-generation 802.11ac Wi-Fi that will be able to deliver Gigabyte Ethernet type speeds to your wireless devices.

The chips, also called “5G Wi-Fi” by Broadcom, do not correlate with 3G and 4G cellphone networks. The BCM4360, BCM4352, BCM43526 and BCM43516 chips improve Wi-Fi’s range and are significantly more efficient. Perhaps, the most tantalizing aspect is that the 5GHz-based technology has speeds beyond 1Gbps and is currently in the high-end range of consumer Ethernet.

Apple currently uses Broadcom Wi-Fi Chips in its Mac line and in its iOS devices, including iPad and iPods.  The latest MacBook Airs have the Broadcom BCM4322 Intensi-fi® Single-Chip 802.11n Wi-Fi Transceiver.  Maybe we will see something a little faster later this year…

Broadcom, the supplier of the first chips to support 5G Gig Wi-Fi, is not just the chip supplier for all of Apple’s iOS devices and Macs, it also provides chips to outfits like Netgear, which today announced the first 802.11AC Wi-Fi router that will be sold next month for a retail price of $199.

The R6300 will be backwardly compatible with N Wi-Fi and will be as future proof as you can get when it goes on sale next month. One has to wonder exactly how long Apple fans will have to wait in order to get this tech in their Macs. Remember…Apple was one of the first to the Wi-Fi Party with its AirPort, released in the late 1990s, and it is always near the front when it comes to Wi-Fi technology.

Press release follows:

Canon PIXMA wireless printers get AirPrint support

Site default logo image

Today Canon announced AirPrint support for their PIXMA series of Wireless Photo All-In-One inkjet printers, enabling wireless printing from iOS devices to the PIXMA MG8220, MG6220 and MG5320.

Along with the announcement, the company also confirmed the majority of their new Canon PIXMA lineup will get AirPrint support going forward. The PIXMA MG8220 goes for $299.99 on Amazon, the MG6220 for $199, and the MG5320 for $149. There’s a new Canon website for AirPrint as well.

A few months back HP also pushed out an update enabling AirPrint support for thirteen printers in their LaserJet series. Epson did the same a few weeks ago.

For the release head south V.
