iPhone 11 release date

At its fall 2019 event, Apple announced that the iPhone 11, 11 Pro, and 11 Pro Max was released on September 20th. Preorders began on September 13th at 5 a.m. PDT.

iPhone 11 price

The iPhone 11 will retail for $699. The iPhone 11 Pro will retail for $999, and the 11 Pro Max will retail for $1,099. Apple is promoting trade-ins of previous models to lower the cost.

iPhone 11 features

The camera has wide and ultra-wide lenses, rather than wide and telephoto like many people had predicted. This feature gives users the ability to adjust cropping and zooming after the photo is taken. There’s also a new night mode that comes on automatically to brighten photos in low-light situations, and reduces noise. It also has a next-generation Smart HDR.

Smart HDR

QuickTake is a new video feature that makes it easier to take videos by long-pressing on the camera button. Video quality is 4K quality at 60 fps, as well as slo-mo, time-lapse, and expanded dynamic range.

The front-facing camera has been updated to 12 MP with wide-angle selfie support when the phone is in landscape. You can also take 4K video at 60 fps, as well as slow-mo videos.

The iPhone 11 is available in six colors: black, white, red, purple, green, and yellow. The iPhone 11 also features a new anodized aluminum finish, which Apple says is more durable. There’s also Dolby Vision audio.

It’s powered by Apple’s new A13 Bionic chip, which Apple touts as its faster processor ever. As for battery life, the iPhone 11 packs a one-hour-longer battery life than the iPhone XS.

iPhone 11 Pro and 11 Pro Max features

Apple has announced an iPhone 11 Pro and 11 Pro Max that will retail for $999 and $1,099.

Color-wise, there’s a new midnight green color, a refreshed space gray, refreshed silver, and a new gold finish. Apple is also promoting a wider dynamic range display called Super Retina XDR. As was rumored, it has a new triple camera system — a triangular array of lenses in a rectangular camera bump.

Apple has added the ultra-wide lens on both the iPhone 11 Pro and Pro Max, which is shown in the Camera app as a 0.5x button. All a user has to do is just zoom out to see more and take wider shots, from 0.5x to 2x. The ultra-wide has an f/2.4 aperture with a 120-degree field of view.

There are also upgrades to the telephoto and wide-angle lenses, including 100% Focus Pixels. There is a new Night mode to take illuminated low-light photos similar to the Google Pixel Night Sight feature.

Apple is using computational photography to fuse photo data from all three lenses in order to improve image detail. A technology called “Deep Fusion” combines nine images using a neural network analysis on every single pixel. Senior Vice President of Worldwide Marketing Phil Schiller described it as “computational photography mad science.”

Like with the non-Pro version, Apple has upgraded the front camera with a 12-megapixel sensor. The camera is also wider so you can now rotate to landscape on the selfie cam to fit more people into the frame. There is also slow-mo on the front camera for the first time.

Comment: Apple probably now has a new approach to the iPhone lineup

How will Apple's iPhone line-up change?

Prior to the iPhone XS, Apple had a simple approach to its iPhone lineup. You could either buy the shiny new model, or you could buy any one of a range of older models — including last year’s flagship. (The iPhone SE temporarily complicated things, but no more, sadly.)

That changed last year. The iPhone X disappeared, and customers were left with a choice of three things…

Apple announces expected iPhone 11 event for September 10: ‘By innovation only’

Save the date. Apple has officially announced its next big event for Tuesday, September 10, where we expect to see the iPhone 11 revealed. This date lines up with the rumored event date based on a leaked asset in iOS 13 beta earlier this month.

The ‘By innovation only’ event will take place at Steve Jobs Theater at Apple Park in Cupertino, California, at 10 am PT/1 pm ET. We also expect Apple to share updates on iOS 13, Apple Watch, Apple TV+ and Arcade, and much more.

Comment: Apple seemingly trying hard to justify rumored iPhone 11 Pro name

iPhone 11 Pro name

I wrote recently that while I tend to believe reports that Apple is planning to launch this year’s flagship iPhones as the iPhone 11 Pro (and Pro Max), I did so reluctantly.

Just the idea of a ‘Pro’ iPhone is a little annoying.

Don’t misunderstand me. Modern iPhones are amazing devices. There was a time when such a powerful and flexible pocket computer would have stretched the credibility of science fiction stories, yet we now take them totally for granted.

And they are sometimes used for professional purposes. There are, for example, all those ‘Shot on iPhone’ movies and ads. But let’s not kid ourselves about those. The reasons for shooting on iPhone have little to do with it being a ‘pro’ device.

However, if the latest reports are to be believed, Apple does seem to be working hard to justify the label…

Another report claims iPhone 11 will bundle USB-C charger in the box

With the iPhone 11 announcement only a couple of weeks away now, the hype train is getting to its peak. We believe Apple will officially unveil the new 2019 iPhone lineup at a media event on September 10, but official press invites have not yet been sent out to confirm the date.

Today, ChargerLAB claimed in a tweet that the iPhone 11 will finally drop the 5W charger, and come with an Apple USB-C charger instead and a Lightning to USB-C cable in the box. This should mean that the iPhone ships with a fast charger for the first time, even though the connector on the actual device will still be Lightning.

Report: iPhone 11 to use same OLED display materials as Samsung Galaxy S10 and Note 10

Japan Display rescue plan confirmed

According to a South Korea industry report, Apple is set to use the same OLED display panel materials for the iPhone 11 as is found in the Samsung Galaxy S10 and the Galaxy Note 10.

For the iPhone X and iPhone XS, Apple used a distinct set of materials — presumably custom chosen by Apple — but this report says Apple will not be doing that for the iPhone 11.

Comment: Reluctantly, I tend to believe the ‘iPhone 11 Pro’ naming reports

iPhone 11 Pro mockups

We’ve heard two credible reports now that this year’s successor to the iPhone XS will be named the iPhone 11 Pro. Today’s report suggests that the successors to the iPhone XR, XS, and XS Max will be, respectively:

  • iPhone 11
  • iPhone 11 Pro
  • iPhone 11 Pro Max

I think it’s a fairly horrible idea, but I do tend to believe it…

Case maker expecting ‘iPhone 11’, ‘iPhone 11 Pro’ and ‘iPhone 11 Pro Max’ brand names

iPhone 11 Max comparison

As we get closer to the iPhone September launch window, iPhone naming speculation ramps up.

We have heard the iPhone Pro moniker mentioned by other sources, and it seems case makers agree. ESR, which sells a multitude of iPhone cases on Amazon and other outlets, is currently betting on the names ‘iPhone 11’, ‘iPhone 11 Pro’ and ‘iPhone 11 Pro Max’ for the 2019 iPhone lineup.

Apple iPhone 11 production orders reportedly same as 2018 iPhone cycle

iPhone 11 performance prediction – faster than thin laptops

Apple appears to be expecting roughly stable demand for the iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Max, and iPhone 11R, set to be announced later this year.

Bloomberg reports that Apple suppliers have been instructed to manufacture parts for about 75 million phones through the end of the year, approximately equal to Apple’s iPhone XS, XR, and XS Max sales for the same period last year.

iPhone 11 Pro Diary: The feature that will likely have me buy the iPhone 11

I didn’t think I’d be very likely to buy the iPhone 11. My plan to date has been to hold out another year with my iPhone X.

The iPhone XS didn’t offer enough to persuade me to upgrade last year, and the rumors to date for this year have made the 2019 iPhones sound rather like another S year. With a much bigger update likely in 2020, including 5G support, the sensible plan seemed to be to wait until then.

But something we learned yesterday through 9to5Mac exclusive will likely be enough to persuade me to upgrade this year …

Apple execs visit Samsung in Korea to discuss fears of iPhone chip shortages

Fears of iPhone chip shortages as Samsung supplies threatened

Apple has reportedly sent executives to Korea to meet with Samsung over fears of iPhone chip shortages — with concerns about both DRAM and NAND production. The manufacture of iPhone displays could also be affected.

The problem arises from a dispute between Japan and Korea, raising the possibility that Samsung may not be able to secure sufficient supplies of a chemical essential to its production process …

Digitimes: 3D Touch removed from all iPhone 11 models, Apple adding BOE as second OLED screen supplier

In a pair of Digitimes reports, Apple is said to be removing 3D Touch from all iPhone 11 models and introducing a new OLED display manufacturer into its supply chain.

Digitimes reports are always a bit hit-and-miss, so take these reports with some skepticism. However, each story makes sense, and in many ways back up morsels of information that were already circulating.
