See All Stories

The iPhone 12 includes 5G speed, an A14 Bionic chip, an edge-to-edge OLED display, and it comes in multiple color options starting at $699.

iPhone 12

The iPhone 12 is Apple’s flagship smartphone introduced in the fall of 2020. The iPhone 12 lineup consists of four devices ranging from 5.4-inches to 6.7-inches in screen size, with flagship features including 5G connectivity, OLED displays, and more.

5G and A14

One of the flagship features of the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro is support for 5G connectivity. There is support for mmWave 5G in the United States exclusively, and support for sub-6GHz 5G in other countries as well as in the U.S.

The iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro are also both powered by a new A14 Bionic processor that uses a new 5 nanometer process to reduce transistor size. Apple says the new six-core CPU is up to 50% faster than any other smartphone. The iPhone 12 also includes a new 4-core GPU, which is up to 50% faster than the competition.

Design and display

The iPhone 12 features a flat-edged design with aluminum edges. The iPhone 12 mini packs a 5.4-inch display while the iPhone 12 features a 6.1-inch display.

Compared to the iPhone 11, the 2020 iPhone is 11% thinner and 15% smaller in volume. Apple has adopted OLED displays across the board, improving contrast and brightness over last year’s LCD display iPhone 11 model. The display itself is a Super Retina XDR panel with a “Ceramic Shield” cover for improved durability and 4x better drop performance.

The iPhone 12 features a 2532×1770 pixel resolution display at 460 pixels-per-inch. The mini display is 2340×1080 in terms of resolution, equating to 476 pixels-per-inch.

Camera

The iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 mini feature a dual-camera setup with wide and ultra wide lenses, alongside more capable Smart HDR and improved Night mode with support for the selfie camera and the ultra wide for the first time. There is also a new Night mode Time-lapse feature on the iPhone 12.

Pricing and release

Apple has secured special deals with Sprint, T-Mobile, AT&T, and Verizon to offer the iPhone 12 mini and iPhone 12 at $699/$799, respectively. If you’re buying for any other carrier, or buying the unlocked version, you’ll pay $729 for the iPhone 12 mini and $829 for the iPhone 12. That’s a $30 price increase based on your carrier.

The iPhone 12 mini was released on November 13, 2020 while the iPhone 12 was released on October 23.

Design

The iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max feature a glass and stainless steel edges. The iPhone 12 Pro measures in at 6.1-inches in terms of screen size, and the iPhone 12 Pro Max features a 6.7-inch display.

Apple says the form factors of the larger iPhone 12 Pro devices are “nearly the same” than the smaller iPhone 11 Pro models they replace, even though the screen sizes have increased. The frame of the iPhone 12 Pro is made out of a durable and shiny stainless steel material available in four different finishes.

Camera

As has become the norm over the last several years, the camera hardware is what differentiates the iPhone 12 Pro from the iPhone 12. The iPhone 12 Pro features a triple-lens camera setup on the back with a telephoto lens, an ultra wide lens, and a wide lens.

Apple says that the new wide camera features the fastest ever aperture on the iPhone, for 27 percent improved low-light performance in photo and video. The ultra wide features a 120-degree field of view, which Apple says is even better for expansive landscape shots.

The iPhone 12 Pro Max features an even larger wide camera sensor, making for an 87 percent improvement in low-light photography. Combined, the Ultra Wide and Telephoto lens system offer 5x optical zoom range, Apple says. You also get all of the same software improvements as the iPhone 12, including Dolby Vision video recording, 10-bit HDR video recording, improved Smart HDR and Night mode, and more.

Finally, both devices also feature an all-new LiDAR Scanner on the back. The LiDAR Scanner enables object and room scanning, AR features, and more. The LiDAR Scanner also contributes to low-light auto focus and improving capture time.

Colors

Both devices are available in four colors, including graphite, silver, gold, and pacific blue.

Pricing and release

The iPhone 12 Pro starts at $999 for 128GB of storage, $1,099 for 256GB of storage, and $1,299 for 512GB of storage. The iPhone 12 Pro Max goes for $1,099, $1,199, and $1,399 for the same storage configurations.

The Pro was released on October 23, 2020 and the Pro Max was released on November 13.

iPhone 12 Accessories

Citing environmental concerns, Apple is no longer including headphones or a charging brick in the iPhone 12 box this year. Here are some accessories you might consider picking up to help fill that gap.

Nikkei corroborates lack of charger and earbuds in iPhone 12 box, OLED screens for all models

iPhone XR best-selling smartphone

This morning, Asian technology publication Nikkei posted its latest report on Apple’s upcoming iPhone lineup, corroborating much of what has been known via other sources.

Nikkei says that the iPhone 12 will consist of four new models and each will be equipped with an OLED display. This will be the first time all of Apple’s flagship phones use OLED screen technology which offers true blacks and better contrast; for instance, the cheaper iPhone 11 models use LCD displays. Nikkei also confirms what has been previously reported about the iPhone’s lack of bundled accessories.

Supply-chain backs reports that not all of this year’s iPhones get mmWave 5G

Only half 2020 iPhones get mmWave 5G

There have been conflicting reports about what sort of 5G support will be offered by the iPhone 12 – specifically, will all of this year’s iPhones get mmWave 5G, or will that be limited to specific models or certain countries?

Some have suggested that only the iPhone 12 Pro models will get the faster mmWave 5G, while others have reported that it will be limited to certain countries. A new supply-chain report doesn’t fully answer the question, but does shed a little light …

Comment: Selling an iPhone without a charger would be a step too far

An iPhone without a charger is a step too far

A new Kuo report suggests that Apple may for the first time sell an iPhone without a charger this year. It follows an earlier report that the iPhone 12 box will lack a second standard iPhone accessory: a pair of EarPods.

Both moves would save Apple money, and by more than the cost of the accessories themselves. As my colleague Benjamin Mayo noted, this would reduce the size and weight of the iPhone box, which would reduce Apple’s freight costs…

iPhone 12 video recording may support 4K at 240fps, up from 60fps in iPhone 11

4K at 240fps

A new video from Filip Koroy aka EverythingApplePro suggests that at least some iPhone 12 models may support new video recording modes: 4K at 120fps and 4K at 240fps. With the iPhone 11 Pro, 4K video recording is limited to 60fps, with 240fps only available in 1080p.

Support for the hi-res slow-motion formats was found in the iOS 14 beta code, and backed by developer and Twitter leaker Max Weinbach, who also cites an Apple source confirming that these formats are being internally tested by Apple …

Kuo: Apple will not include earbuds or charger in iPhone 12 box

Apple is set to be significantly slimming its packaging for its upcoming iPhone line. The analyst previously said that Apple will no longer include wired earbuds with the iPhone 12, and today reports that he also expects the power adapter to now be sold separately too.

Kuo says that Apple wants to keep selling the iPhone 12 at a similar price to the iPhone 11 and removing in-box accessories will offset the cost of the 5G networking components. This will presumably reduce the size of the iPhone packaging considerably, helping lower Apple’s freight costs and be better for the environment.

Supply chain sources indicate iPhone 12 on track for September launch; more

iPhone 12 back on track for September launch says analyst

Analysts at Wedbush say that Apple’s supply chain has made impressive strides in ramping up production capabilities, putting the iPhone 12 back on track for a September launch.

The supply chain getting back to normalization ahead of expectations has been impressive and now ultimately puts Cook & Co. back in the drivers seat to launch this 5G cycle in its typical mid-late September timeframe …

Claimed iPhone 12 CAD images

More claimed iPhone 12 CAD images surface, with new claims, but mean little

We’re likely to see an increasing number of claimed iPhone 12 CAD images through the summer, and the latest ones are being used to suggest that the new design may be less new that previously suggested.

Specifically, EverythingApplePro suggests the expected LiDAR module for improved AR apps will be limited to the larger of the two iPhone 12 Pro models we’re expecting, and that the notch size will remain unchanged from the iPhone 11 Pro …

Another analyst believes Apple will not include EarPods with iPhone 12

EarPods

In May, Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo raised the idea that Apple is not planning to include its wired EarPod earbuds in the iPhone 12 box, as it has done with all previous iPhone models.

Now, Wedbush analyst Dan Ives is also saying that he is hearing the same: “our checks that likely no wired EarPods will come in the iPhone 12 box/packaging”. Ultimately, this will help Apple drive sales of its wireless AirPods earbuds ever higher.

Eurasian regulatory filings list upcoming iPhone 12 models and likely redesigned iMac

iPhone sales grow

Apple’s latest updates to the Eurasian Economic Commission database have hit today, with a handful of new model identifiers to theorize about. After a leaker indicated that a new iMac model was coming at WWDC, the EEC database now lists a new desktop Mac with model identifier ‘A2330’, running macOS 10.15. This is adding more fuel on the fire that a new generation iMac is just around the corner, expected to end a decade-long run of the current iMac’s industrial design.

There are also EEC listings for the expected iPhone 12 lineup, nine new model identifiers in total …

iPhone 12 volume production begins in July says report

A new report today claims that iPhone 12 volume production will begin sometime in July, as the final phase of engineering validation is expected to be completed by the end of this month. That could build up enough stock for some availability in September.
