iPhone 8

A new generation of iPhone

See All Stories

Check out our top stories on iPhone 8:

Apple has announced the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus alongside the iPhone X at its September event.

The iPhone 8 models bring some solid upgrades over the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus including a new processor, wireless charging, upgraded cameras, a new glass back, and more.

Both the iPhone 8, 8 Plus, and X feature the A11 Bionic processor. The all new chip has four efficiency cores that are up to 70% faster than A10 Fusion and two performance cores that are up to 25% faster. The new models also have an Apple designed GPU that offers up to 30% better performance than the A10 chip.

KGI: Initial iPhone 8 sales were not ‘weak’, stable demand at carriers

A new report from KGI rebuts some of the industry pessimism around the launch of the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus. Although it is true that lines were shorter than the usual blockbuster iPhone release, KGI says that opening weekend sales were about half that of last year’s.

Given that many early adopters are waiting for the iPhone X, 50% sales volume is inline with expectations. KGI says they are seeing stable demand from carrier sales.

Comment: Why the iPhone X appears to be power-hungry despite more efficient OLED screen

We noted earlier a Chinese regulatory filing that appears to confirm an earlier report that the iPhone X will come equipped with 3GB RAM. That same filing also contains another interesting number: the apparent battery capacity.

Serial leaker Steve Hemmerstoffer tweeted the image showing a battery capacity of 2716mAh – even higher than the 2691mAh battery found in the iPhone 8 Plus, with its far less power-efficient LCD screen …

New glass enclosure, A11 Bionic chip, flash storage, 3GB RAM to blame for iPhone 8 price increase [U]

Update: A filing with TENAA – China’s equivalent of the FCC – seemingly also confirms that the iPhone X has 3GB RAM. This was first reported earlier this month by developer Steve Troughton-Smith, after a leak of the iOS 11 GM allowed people to go hunting through the code for clues to the new hardware. The filing was spotted by Steve Hemmerstoffer.

With the introduction of the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus, Apple slightly raised the price of each device. Now, new research from IHS Markit published by Bloomberg offers a bit more insight as to what drove Apple’s price hike…

The best (and worst) new iPhone 8/Plus features [Video]

The iPhone 8, and iPhone 8 Plus are officially on sale, and we were able to score both new smartphones early last Friday morning (read Jordan’s full review).

This launch felt a little different from past iPhone launches, simply because the highly-anticipated iPhone X looms large on the horizon. I’ve asked lots of people, and many of them have stated that they are waiting for Apple’s OLED-enabled, diminished-bezel flagship model.

But just because the iPhone X is coming later this year doesn’t automatically mean that you should ignore the iPhone 8. Apple’s brand new flagship smartphone shares a lot of the same design characteristics as the iPhone 6, 6s, and 7, but it also shares some of the same technical power that’s found inside the iPhone X. In this hands-on video unboxing and walkthrough, we consider some of the iPhone 8’s best new features.

AR features for MLB At Bat app teased in keynote won’t go public until next year

Phil Schiller teased an augmented reality overlay on a live baseball game during the iPhone 8 keynote presentation. Fans viewing the match could instantly see things like how far a ball was thrown, how hard it was hit and how fast a player is running.

But while those features are coming to the MBL At Bat app, fans won’t get them until the 2018 season …

Here’s how well the iPhone 8’s new all-glass design holds up [Video]

When Apple announced the new iPhone 8, it was quick to tout the device’s durability. With a new, all-glass design, customers were rightfully worried about how sturdy that glass was. “This glass is the most durable ever in an iPhone,” Apple said.

A new video from YouTuber PhoneBuff puts Apple’s iPhone 8 Plus to the test with an extensive drop test and comparison to the Galaxy Note 8.

Opinion: Constrained iPhone X supply will create a secondary spike in iPhone 8 sales before holidays

Launch day has arrived for the iPhone 8 along with Apple Watch Series 3 and Apple TV 4K. So far, demand for the more iterative iPhone 8 has appeared to be weak as many wait for iPhone X. However, with iPhone X rumored to have hit another production setback, we could see iPhone 8 sales jump after we get a look at iPhone X lead times later next month.

iPhone 8 faster than a Core i5 13-inch MacBook Pro in Geekbench; leaves Samsung S8 for dead

We noted in our iPhone 8 review that the Geekbench scores of the new iPhone were equivalent to a MacBook Pro.

To put it simply, the iPhone 8 line has a MacBook Pro Intel level processor inside.

Fresh tests provide a direct comparison to prove the point – and show the astonishing performance lead the iPhone 8 has over Samsung’s flagship devices in a real-life video editing task …

iPhone 8 launch sees ‘bleak’ turnout in Australia and London as iPhone X looms

Update: Business Insider reports that it’s the same at London’s flagship Apple Store in Regent Street, with just a handful of people there at 7am and not many more when it opened.

As we highlighted earlier this evening, the iPhone 8 is already available for purchase in several countries around the world as time zones shift into September 22nd. It’s no secret that much of the typical iPhone launch day excitement this year is tapered by the looming iPhone X, however, and Reuters says the effect was crystal clear in Australia…

Professional photographer shoots 2,000 images with the iPhone 8 Plus, impressed by color capture

We noted in our review roundup that TechCrunch said the iPhone 8 Plus is all about the camera, and CNETs senior photographer James Martin decided to give it a thorough test. He spent three days shooting more than 2,000 images before reaching his verdict.

I set out on an adventure in and around San Francisco, CNET’s hometown, to capture the city’s eclectic mix of architecture, landmarks and natural beauty — testing a range of lighting conditions, photography modes and filters.

I boated on San Francisco Bay, fished on Ocean Beach, biked around Angel Island and walked through Chinatown with the soon-to-be-released iPhone 8 Plus in hand …

iPhone 8 and X support pad-free wireless charging, third-party distance charger on the way

While the iPhone 8 and iPhone X support the older Qi standard for wireless charging using a pad, both devices are also compatible with longer-range resonant induction charging – which works without direct contact with a pad. Resonant charging is a more recent addition to the Qi standard, and gets us one step along the way to truly wireless charging.

A team of MIT alumni have developed a charger that uses this technology, allowing you to use your iPhone while it’s being wirelessly charged …

iPhone 8/Plus Review: With this traditionally beautiful powerhouse, should you really wait for iPhone X?

The iPhone 8 and 8 Plus are Apple’s newest handsets introduced during its first event at the new Steve Jobs Theater at its also new Apple Park campus last week. But you can’t possibly consider the new phones without noting that Apple this year is breaking from tradition and launching a third flagship model that is radically different than the 8 and 8 Plus. It’s called iPhone X, as in the 10th anniversary edition of the device. It is smaller than the 8 Plus yet has a bigger OLED screen with a controversial notch and it starts at $1000. We hope to have a review of it shortly.

The iPhone 8, however, is by no means a slouch of an update. I’ve been testing both the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus (following some hands on time with the iPhone X at Apple’s event) and I must say the impressive update is way more than skin deep beyond the shiny new glass exterior…
