A new generation of iPhone

See All Stories

Check out our top stories on iPhone 8:

Apple has announced the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus alongside the iPhone X at its September event.

The iPhone 8 models bring some solid upgrades over the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus including a new processor, wireless charging, upgraded cameras, a new glass back, and more.

Both the iPhone 8, 8 Plus, and X feature the A11 Bionic processor. The all new chip has four efficiency cores that are up to 70% faster than A10 Fusion and two performance cores that are up to 25% faster. The new models also have an Apple designed GPU that offers up to 30% better performance than the A10 chip.

Upcoming iPhone 8 release event means now is time to lock in payment for your current Apple devices

With the new iPhone product launch event officially announced, now is the time to sell your old iPhones, Apple TVs, and Apple Watches before the prices drop after the event. We’ve analyzed data from the last two iPhone launches and there is a consistent trend of a phone’s value immediately dropping by about 15% following a new iPhone announcement and then by another 15% within a month or two of the release.

This weekend however, we’re giving you a special opportunity to lock in a solid price for your iPhone and keep that price through the end of September – almost certainly enough time to get your new iPhone. Use code monthlock at checkout to keep your locked in price until September 30th.

Analyst predicts iPhone 8 release date delayed until late October

An analyst report today reiterates claims that the OLED iPhone 8 launch could be significantly delayed compared to the debut of the ‘7s’ models, which represent more modest improvements over the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus.

Rosenblatt believes that whilst all three new iPhones will be announced on September 12th at the event, the iPhone 8 release date could be as far out as late October, citing production issues with the stainless steel metal frame.

Reported iPhone 8 delays leading analysts to doubt Apple’s guidance, downgrading sales expectations

We’ve heard many reports suggesting that Apple is experiencing significant difficulties with development and production of the iPhone 8/Edition/X. A WSJ report yesterday suggested that Foxconn is trying to recruit additional staff to make up time, but a separate TechCrunch one cited ‘trusted sources’ in stating that shipping will be significantly delayed.

Analysts and investors are now said to be starting to doubt Apple’s own guidance for the current quarter …

WSJ: iPhone 8 production month behind, Foxconn paying bonuses to increase staff

The Wall Street Journal has published a new report on iPhone 8 production ahead of Apple’s major unveiling next week. While the lead suggests Apple is having trouble making the redesigned iPhone altogether — which is hitting stock — the story as a whole largely echoes what regular readers have been following this summer. The WSJ describes iPhone 8 production as about a month behind schedule, but claims iPhone maker Foxconn is offering bonuses to employees who can bring in new hires.

The iPhone will see massive growth in 2018, predicts Guggenheim, tailing off into 2020

Last year wasn’t the greatest one for Apple, with all of its hardware lines – iPhone, iPad and Mac – experiencing year-on-year declining sales. Guggenheim Securities believes that there’s both good news and bad ahead.

The good news, it says, is that the iPhone 8/Edition/X will see massive iPhone revenue growth in 2018 …

Comment: Expect plenty of radical iPhone 8 feature demos to take the stage next week

We’re less than a week away from one of the biggest Apple events of all-time. Next week, Tim Cook will take the stage at the Steve Jobs Theater to officially unveil Apple’s three new iPhones to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the original iPhone back in 2007.

This year’s flagship iPhone 8 will include a host of changes, some being radical departures from how we’ve grown accustomed to using our smartphones over recent years. Because of these dramatic changes, this year’s iPhone event will depend more on demos than ever before, and we should expect Cook and other Apple executives to spend the majority of their time showing off these changes…

See how the iPhone 8 screen size compares with the 7 Plus and all earlier iPhones

We’ve already taken a look at how the upcoming iPhone 8/Edition compares with the complete set of previous generations, but a new comparison shows how they look side by side with the screens on.

The iPhone 8/edition shown is of course a dummy model with a mockup screen, but it still gives a good look at how the size will compare in use …

Comment: Samsung’s easily-fooled face-recognition system shows sense in Apple’s ‘best not first’ approach

Update: While some suggested this might just be a demo mode thing, that approves anything vaguely resembling a face, CNET confirmed on its review unit that the device is indeed fooled by photos.

We tried it on our own Note 8, and sure enough, it’s still possible to fool it with a flat photo. A Samsung rep tells CNET that the company’s guidance remains the same: You’ll want to use the fingerprint sensor or iris scanner for security, and should view facial recognition as a convenient alternative to the simple swipe-to-unlock gesture.

While Apple’s detractors often criticise Apple for hyping features already seen in competitor devices, the Cupertino company doesn’t just follow the market. In particular, it tends to assess which features do and don’t make sense, and then aim to make the best possible version of the ones that do.

The sense of this approach appears to have again been illustrated by not just one but two Samsung devices …

Consumers not yet aware of radical nature of iPhone 8 redesign, says Piper Jaffray

It’s sometimes easy to forget that people like us, who follow Apple news closely, are quite different to the typical iPhone buyer. While we may have a pretty solid idea what we’re expecting from the iPhone 8/Edition, the average consumer doesn’t, says Piper Jaffray.

A survey of iPhone owners found that current interest in upgrading is only slightly higher than it was at the same time last year …

Purported OLED iPhone 8 SIM trays surface, once again showing new gold color

The new iPhone is going to be announced in a week’s time. In the runup to launch, we keep seeing new part leaks for various components and today is no exception. Benjamin Geskin has shared photos of the alleged iPhone 8 SIM trays.

Following previous rumors, Apple appears to be changing up the color lineup slightly for the 2017 iPhones as the SIM tray appears to be a different shade of gold than what Apple currently offers with iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus.

Taiwanese sources illustrate likely depth of impact on supply-chain of iPhone 8 sales

With the iPhone 8 (or Edition) expected to generate record sales for Apple, it’s obvious that iPhone assemblers like Foxconn will benefit, alongside major suppliers like Samsung Display, which is making the OLED panels.

But Taiwanese sources provide an illustration of just how far that benefit reaches into the upstream supply chain …

iPhone 8/Edition may include option to invoke Siri with sleep/wake button [U]

[Update: A discovery by iHelp BR earlier this month also suggests that the sleep/wake button may have custom functions in native iOS apps. The line of code found was “lockButtonAppropriateForShutter”. With the larger sleep/wake button we’ve seen in many iPhone 8/Edition renders, it’s possible we could see two buttons housed within the new sleep/wake button.]

The latest discovery by developer Guilherme Rambo indicates the iPhone 8/Edition could use the sleep/wake button to invoke Siri in place of the Home button.

iPhone X Diary: It hasn’t even been announced yet, but I already know I’ll be buying one

Those who follow my various diary series’ (Apple Watch, iPad Pro, Apple MusiciPhone SE, Smart Home, Drone) won’t be too surprised that I’m beginning this one before the device has even been officially announced.

The idea behind the diary format is that a single review will always provide an incomplete impression, and sometimes even a misleading one. It represents one particular slice in time. With things I use as heavily as Apple kit, it’s almost certain that my views will change over time.

And with something as heavily hyped as the iPhone 8/Edition, I thought it made sense to begin the diary now – with my impressions from the various rumors and leaks, and why I already know I’ll be buying one despite four good reasons not to …

More OLED iPhone 8 components surface as video claims to show (likely fake) Apple leather case

With less than two weeks before Apple’s blockbuster event on September 12th, there’s still time for more iPhone 8 parts to leak out as production ramps. Today, new photos allegedly reveal the internal iPhone 8 speaker and Lightning connector components. Whilst Apple is pushing wireless inductive charging as a flagship feature of the new phones, the Lightning connector will be upgraded to support Type-C fast charging when using a wire …

Major Apple casemakers updating internal SKUs to ‘iPhone 8’, ‘iPhone 8 Plus’ and ‘iPhone Edition’

I’m here at IFA in Berlin, Germany which opens to the public today. Behind the scenes I’ve been discussing the upcoming iPhone launch on September 12th with many case vendors. At least two have heard, and have moved on, knowledge of the upcoming iPhone nomenclature and some details which they’ve separately learned from sources in Shenzhen who claim to have seen the new iPhone packaging.

Sketchy but plausible supply-chain report repeats rumors of larger 6.5-inch iPhone for next year

A supply-chain source is echoing an earlier rumor that Apple is planning on an even larger OLED iPhone next year.

Hinting at a source within Samsung Display, the report suggests that next year’s iPhone will be offered in two sizes: a 5.85-inch one with the same screen size as the iPhone 8, and a larger 6.46-inch ‘Plus’ model …
