iPhone SE 3 vs SE 2, iPhone 11, 12, 13

The iPhone SE is the most affordable in Apple’s current iPhone lineup. The first generation SE debuted in 2016, the second generation in 2020, and the third generation in 2022.

What is the iPhone SE called?

Apple’s most affordable iPhone is called the iPhone SE. While in its third generation, the device is also referred to as the iPhone SE 3 or the iPhone SE (2022).

iPhone SE design and size

iPhone SE 3

The iPhone SE (3rd generation) looks nearly identical to the iPhone SE (2nd generation). It still has a 4.7 inch screen and the home button featuring Touch ID. Both the front and back of the device are made of glass.

Display

The iPhone SE (third generation) features a 4.7 inch Retina HD display. There are no upgrades to display from the previous generation iPhone SE.

Camera upgrades

While the camera upgrades aren’t major, they are still notable. With the computational power of the A15 Bionic chip, the iPhone SE’s camera is better than before. Apple added Deep Fusion, where in mid to low light, the camera will capture subtle details, textures, and patterns.

There’s also Photographic Styles, where you can set the look for your photos and the iPhone SE will automatically adjust to whichever tone you choose.

A15 Bionic processor

The iPhone SE is powered by Apple’s A15 Bionic processor. This is also the processor of the iPhone 13 lineup and offers noticeable performance gains over the A14. The A15 Bionic processor has 1.2x faster graphics than the iPhone SE 2’s A13.

5G connectivity

Site default logo image

The iPhone SE is the newest generation to offer 5G connectivity. This allows for faster streaming, multiplayer gaming, and downloads with less lag.

Storage options

The newest iPhone SE has the same storage options as the previous generation SE. The iPhone SE is available in 64GB, 128GB, and 256GB configurations.

Larger battery

Battery on the iPhone SE (3rd generation) has improved since the iPhone SE (2nd generation). The SE 3 has up to two additional hours of video playback than the SE 2. The device will have around 15 hours of overall battery life.

Colors

While the iPhone SE (3rd generation) has the same design as the iPhone SE (2nd generation), there are two new colors. Starlight and Midnight join the lineup, while the (PRODUCT)Red is the same as the previous generation.

Release date: When did the iPhone SE come out?

The iPhone SE was announced at Apple’s ‘Peek Performance’ event on March 8 and released on March 18.

Price: How much does the iPhone SE cost?

The iPhone SE costs $429. This is a $30 price increase from the iPhone SE (2nd generation).

Wrap up

The iPhone SE (3rd generation) is not a major upgrade from the previous generation.

Would you be interested in an iPhone SE 2 with an iPhone X-like design? [Poll]

While whispers of an iPhone SE 2 have been circulating for quite a long time at this point, a case maker this morning offered up renders of what it thinks the device will look like.

These renders depict a device that’s similar to the iPhone X in design, but it’s important to remember to treat them with a healthy dose of skepticism…

Case maker Olixar believes iPhone SE 2 will feature iPhone X-esque design with slim bezels and notch

We’ve received some interesting photos from iPhone case maker Olixar of what they believe the iPhone SE 2 to look like. They are already advertising screen protectors for sale and shared schematics from ‘Chinese factory sources’ with us. They believe the new iPhone SE will resemble an iPhone X with slim bezels and a notch cutout.

This is a hard claim to take seriously, given the SE’s traditional lower price point, but Olixar definitely seem convinced. This is also not the first report that the SE will have a notch screen design. More photos and schematics info after the jump …

Photos claim to show redesigned iPhone SE 2 with glass back for wireless charging, headphone jack remains

The iPhone SE 2 rumor train has been a wild one. There are many conflicting reports about the device, ranging from rumors of a major chassis change to only a minor hardware revision.

These new photos purport to show a fully built iPhone SE 2, with resemblances to some leaked shells first seen in March. They depict a device somewhere in between the two extremes of the rumored specs; a new glass back for wireless charging but a 3.5mm hole for a headphone jack remains.

Regulatory filings indicate a flurry of new iPhone (SE?) models launching soon

The same Eurasian regulatory database that tipped the hat on AirPods, iPhone 7, new MacBooks and the latest iPad is back. This time, a new filing discovered by Consomac references a handful of as-yet-unannounced iPhone models spanning eleven model identifiers.

Devices typically appear in this database about a month before the products ship. These iPhone references were posted yesterday, suggesting a new iPhone launch will be debuting in early May/June.

Unlikely ‘iPhone SE 2’ with iPhone X design surfaces in new video

Macotakara has shared a new video that first surfaced on Weibo and shows an iPhone SE-style phone with an iPhone X-style display that appears to be running iOS. Based on the current rumors (and lack of schematics and hardware leaks) so far, however, the likelihood that this is an actual iPhone is next to nothing. The footage does make for some nice visual eye candy however…

LG will supply OLED screens for larger 6.5-inch iPhone, while Samsung sticks to 5.8-inch model, says report

A KGI report back in November said that Apple was working on two OLED iPhones for 2018, an updated version of the 5.8-inch iPhone X and a larger, 6.5-inch Plus model.

A supply-chain report today states that while Samsung will remain the sole or primary supplier of the OLED panels for the smaller model, LG will supply the panels for the 6.5-inch model …

New renders imagine iPhone SE 2 with iPhone X style screen and notch [Video]

We’ve already seen one designer’s take on an all-screen iPhone SE, presented not long after the launch of this year’s new flagship phone, and Concept Creator has now given us an alternative vision of Apple’s most compact iPhone.

The overall deal is the same. Take the classic design of the SE, and add a near-bezel-free display with the famous iPhone X notch …

Apple looks likely to get green light on retail stores in India; may get tax-breaks

Indian iPhone production ramping up

Apple’s long-standing request to open its own retail stores in India looks likely to be approved by the Indian government after Chinese brand Oppo was granted permission. Apple products are currently sold locally by authorized resellers.

The Indian government only allows single-brand retail stores when at least 30% of the products sold are manufactured in the country. As the iPhone accounts for a high percentage of Apple’s sales, with the SE a popular model in India because of its relative affordability, it seems likely that the requirement will be hit thanks to local manufacturing of the model

Korean report claims Apple plans 6-inch-plus LCD iPhone for 2018

The OLED iPhone X has been described by Apple as the future of the phone, but a Korean report claims that Apple isn’t yet done with launching all-new LCD models.

It claims that next year’s line-up will include a brand new screen size. That might not be surprising if it were suggesting a new OLED model, but this one is said to have an LCD screen …

Apple requests tax-breaks for suppliers as it seeks to establish ‘mini-Shenzhen’ in India

Apple has asked the Indian government to extend the tax breaks it has been granted for its own operations to its suppliers. This would enable the company to move from mere iPhone assembly in India – with the actual parts still made in China – to more of a true manufacturing operation.

We described recently how Apple relies on an entire network of suppliers centred around the Chinese city of Shenzhen. Tim Cook’s discussions with Indian prime minister Narendra Modi have extended to establishing a kind of Little Shenzhen within India …

Would you be interested in a new version of the iPhone SE? [Poll]

Earlier today, a somewhat sketchy report outlined the possibility of Apple introducing a new iPhone SE next month ahead of the iPhone 8 later this year. While Apple introduced a higher storage tier of the device earlier this year, it has remained essentially untouched since its debut last year.
