All aboard the hyperbole train: Manhattan district attorney says iPhone security helps terrorists

Site default logo image

Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus R. Van

We’ve heard some pretty outrageous ramblings from the government regarding Apple’s use of encryption in its mobile devices in the past—including a claim from the Department of Justice that some day it will result in the death of a child—but Manhattan district attorney Cyrus Vance, Jr. might have just dethroned the DOJ as king of hyperbole.

Yesterday morning during a radio interview, Vance claimed that Apple’s encrypted software will make the iPhone the communication tool of choice for terrorists:

Apple quietly updates Watch website, removes April 24th availability date

The Apple Watch site as it appears now

Apple has made a small but notable change to the web page for its upcoming wearable device. The page previously featured the tagline “Available 4.24.15,” but that notice has now been replaced with “The Watch is coming.”

The change likely stems from the fact that many users have discovered they will be unable to actually get their devices on launch day due to shipping delays, low stock, or the inability to buy them at an Apple Retail Store on launch day.

Vintage Apple I computer hits the auction block to support charity

applei

An original 1976 Apple I computer said to have been built in Steve Jobs’ garage has gone on auction, with a percentage of the proceeds set to support the ALS Association. The machine is one of only 63 existing models. There are currently over 50 bids on the auction, with the highest curently sitting at $20,600 at the time of this writing.

As noted in the auction, a similar computer sold for over $900,000 to the Henry Ford Museum last September. That machine had the serial number #70, while the model in this auction carries the number #22.

10% of the final sale price will go to support the ALS Assocation to fight amyotrophic lateral sclerosis—a cause Apple executives previously took up with last year’s Ice Bucket Challenge.

You can check out the full auction listing, including many more details about the computer itself, over on eBay.

1Password update brings password manager to your wrist with Apple Watch app

Site default logo image

A big update is currently rolling out to users of the excellent 1Password application that includes support for the Apple Watch. According to the company’s blog post, the watch app will let you access important information like credit card numbers and one-time passwords (introduced in a recent update) directly from your wrist.

Without a proper keyboard or Touch ID scanner on the Apple Watch, how exactly you’ll unlock the miniaturized password manager has yet to be revealed, but it will likely rely on the iPhone’s security features to make sure that only authorized users have access to your data.

Apple reportedly taking 15% cut of HBO Now & other subscriptions on Apple TV

Apple TV simple

Apple has long taken a 30% cut of sales made through its various digital stores, including fees charged for subscriptions to Newsstand magazines and other recurring charges. However, Re/code reports today that the company has cut that figure in half for subscriptions charged through the Apple TV.

In a move that’s likely intended to bring in content, Apple allows companies like Hulu and HBO to keep a larger portion of their subscription fees on the TV-based hub device, though charges made through iOS apps and other platforms still seem to fall under the 30% deal.

When exactly this revenue share change was made is unclear, but it doesn’t seem to be a new developement, given that services which have been on the Apple TV for some time now fall under these terms. The point is nearly moot though, when you consider how many offerings on the Apple TV are completely free of charge, or don’t offer in-app subscription options.

Based on the success of Apple’s exclusive HBO Now partnership, however, it’s possible that future channel additions could impement a similar system that allows users to purchase subscriptions through their Apple IDs. This deal could also help Apple secure more content providers for its upcoming digital television service.

OS X 10.10.3 adds support for NVMExpress, enabling improved SSD speeds and performance

Site default logo image

Screen Shot 2015-04-13 at 11.31.39 AM

Apple quietly slipped support for a feature called NVMExpress into the latest version of OS X, which shipped early last week. This addition to the software enables some newer Macs using PCIe-based solid-state drives to achieve greater data transfer speeds.

Not every Mac that uses an SSD for storage will be able to take advantage of this new protocol, however. The screenshot above comes from a late 2013 MacBook Pro with a solid-state drive that doesn’t support the feature. The newest 13-inch MacBook Pros are also left out. In fact, at the moment it appears that only the 12-inch MacBook sports a support drive.

Apple reverses policy, will now hire felons to work on Campus 2 construction

Site default logo image

Apple Campus 2 Cupertino

Earlier this week it was reported that Apple had put a policy in place that would have prevented the company from hiring people who been convicted of felonies within the past seven years to aid in the construction of its new headquarters.

According to the original report, fewer than five people had actually been denied jobs because of their criminal backgrounds. Even so, union leaders sent letters to CEO Tim Cook at the beginning of the year asking for the policy to be lifted, but to no avail.

After drawing fire from unions and workers, Apple today reversed that decision and announced that it will hire those workers who were recently convicted of felonies.

Hammer Time: The Apple Watch gets its clock cleaned

UK-based electronics repair site iPhonefixed has gotten its hands on one of the sapphire crystal displays to be used in the mid-range and high-end Apple Watch models and put it through a bevy of quick scratch tests to see how it would fare.

After taking everything from sandpaper to a hammer and even a power drill to the cover, iPhonefixed’s testers were unable to put so much as a scratch on the sapphire surface. Overall it looks like the watch will be pretty durable.

The iTunes update also includes “several refinements to the Get Info window,” and improves the app’s stability.

You can download iTunes 12.1.2 from the Updates tab on the Mac App Store right now.

New photos purportedly show 4th-generation iPad mini casing with iPad Air 2-like design

Site default logo image

iPad-Mini-4-00

A new batch of photos published by French site NowhereElse may give us an idea of what the next generation of the iPad mini will look like. The images are said to be of the casing for the unannounced tablet upgrade, and seem to feature some design elements inspired by the most recent version of the larger iPad model.

While the third-generation iPad mini was simply a Touch ID-equipped version of the previous model, many Apple fans are hoping to see a redesign much like this with the next refresh.

Aside from the obvious similarities in the shape and materials, the photos and a video of the shell (which can be seen below) reveal a redesigned speaker grille that mirrors the iPad Air 2’s move away from two rows of speaker holes to just one. The new shell also indicates that the iPad mini 4 may be thinner than its predecessor, though it doesn’t seem like a big stretch to predict that.

Update: Apple has added these four tour videos to its YouTube channel, as well. They are available below.

In the lead-up to the retail debut of its first wearable device, Apple has launched a new website that features demo videos demonstrating the watch’s capabilities. At the moment, there are four videos available on the site, covering the Messages ap, customizable watch faces, and Digital Touch communication features. A general overview at the top of the page provides a broad look at the watch’s capabilities.

At the moment, only those in-depth videos seem to be available, but spaces detailing phone calls, Siri, the mapping application, music playback, Apple Pay transactions, and the built-in pair of health and fitness apps are all marked as “Coming Soon.”

Spoiler alert: We’ve read the screenplay for Aaron Sorkin’s Steve Jobs biopic and it looks fantastic

Site default logo image

fassbender-rogen-jobs-woz

While we haven’t gotten many details about the Aaron Sorkin-penned screenplay based on Walter Isaacson’s Steve Jobs biography, we have previously learned that it will focus on three separate days in the life of the Apple co-founder, with each 30-minute act taking place just before a major product announcement. We also know that Michael Fassbender will star alongside Seth Rogen, Michael Stuhlbarg, Kate Winslet, Perla Haney-Jardine, and Jeff Daniels.

Today we got our hands on a copy of the screenplay (or at least a February 2014 draft of it) which reveals what many already may have already suspected based on previous reports: the three products Jobs will unveil during the biopic are the original Macintosh, the NeXT Cube, and the iMac.

The film opens with… (Read more)

Apple reportedly asking content producers to supply their own streams for TV offering

appletv3

Apple has requested that programming partners who will take part in the company’s upcoming television streaming service provide their own content streams, Re/Code reported today. It’s not an unreasonable request on Apple’s part—in fact, it makes a lot of sense—so it doesn’t seem like this will be a big holdup for the service’s launch.

Most TV networks already provide online streams in one form or another, so giving Apple access to that content shouldn’t put too much of a burden on them, though some network executives are said to be worried about the idea of paying the streaming costs on a platform promoted by Apple, versus one solely promoted by the network itself.

Existing Apple TV apps use content hosted and streamed by the networks rather than Apple, as 9to5Mac previously noted in a behind-the-scenes look at the development of Bloomberg’s app.

Apple announces live Q2 2015 earnings call for April 27th

Screen Shot 2015-03-30 at 5.47.33 PM

Apple has scheduled its Q2 2015 earnings call for April 27th. The call will be held at 2PM Cupertino time, and will cover the company’s earnings for the second quarter of the fiscal year. As usual, the live audio of the call will be available on Apple’s website.

Prior to the call, the company will release its Q2 earnings report, then the executive team will break down the numbers in a bit more detail for investors and members of the media on its quarterly conference call. A Q&A session will provide a chance for the executives to cryptically hint at future plans while going into even further detail on specific points.

During the previous call, Apple announced that it had reached a major milestone by shipping its 1 billionth iOS device and sold 74.4 million iPhones, 21.4 million iPads, and 5.5 million Mac computers, raking in a total of $74.6 billion in revenue.

Apple’s guidance for the second quarter came in between $52 billion and $55 billion. We’ll find out how close (or how far beyond that) the company came near the end of April.

Some new photos posted by Future Supplier claim to show the leaked rear casing to the rumored “iPhone 6C.” Recent reports have said that the device will sport a 4-inch screen like that of the iPhone 5, 5C, and 5S, allowing it to appeal to those who prefer smaller displays over the larger iPhone 6 and 6 Plus.

While the veracity of these shots has not been confirmed, there are some interesting details to note that could give us some more clues about the design of the rumored device.

Twitter sharing disappears in latest iOS beta, may indicate upcoming app-based extension

Site default logo image

FullSizeRender

Update: An April 6, 2015 update to the app has re-enabled native sharing on iOS 8.3. It’s possible that this indicates Twitter changed something a little too early on its end, or a new 8.3 beta will introduce a change that pulls up a different extension when the app is installed.

A small change to the latest beta version of iOS may indicate a big change coming to the official Twitter application. In the pre-release version of the software that was provided to testers and developers last week, it seems the option to share content to Twitter has been removed entirely (update: if you have the latest version of the official Twitter app installed).

Not only is the Twitter icon now missing from the share sheet in first-party apps like Photos and Safari, but from all third-party apps that use the native sharing option introduced in iOS 8. The change could just be a glitch, but it more likely suggests that Apple may be removing its in-house Twitter sheet in favor of something new…

Purported ‘iPad Pro’ dummy model dredges up age-old rumor of dual Lightning ports

Site default logo image

It’s been a while since we heard rumors that a new iPad model would sport dual connectors for hooking it up to a computer or accessories, but a set of photos circulating online is bringing that idea back to the forefront.

The photos claim to depict the back of Apple’s upcoming “iPad Pro,” a larger 12.9-inch model of its existing tablet. Not a whole lot of new details are visible in the photos, but a spare Lightning port can be spied on the side of the device. Typically the Lightning port is located on the bottom edge.

New rumor claims Apple will launch three iPhone models this year, including 4-inch iPhone 6C

Site default logo image

A sketchy new rumor from the sometimes-unreliable Digitimes claims that Apple will be releasing three new iPhone models this year. While many Apple watchers are expecting to see the release of two new “S” models—the iPhone 6S and 6S Plus—the new report also says the company will release a third model this year.

We’ve previously heard rumors that the “C” iPhone lineup would be disappearing after the launch of the iPhone 6. However, Digitimes claims that Apple will be debuting an “iPhone 6C” later this year that will sport a 4-inch display like that of the iPhone 5 and 5s. It’s possible that this is related to the rumors of a pink iPhone launching with the next refresh.
