App Store now mentions when iOS apps have Apple TV versions

Update: The feature now appears to have propagated correctly, as the codename identifier is no longer visible. The app now correctly lists ‘Apple TV: Yes’ in the description for universal apps that support Apple TV.

Apple is rolling out a way to see if an app in the App Store also has an Apple TV version. From this morning, App Store listings have included ‘SF.UniversalAppleTV’ labels. If present, it means that the app in question also has a universal Apple TV app available in the tvOS App Store.

Evidently, the feature is not fully baked and is in the process of rolling out. The label is clearly an internal identifier not meant to seen by the public. When the feature is fully rolled out, expect it the left column to simply say ‘Apple TV’ which matches the language used for Apple Watch compatibility.

Apple advertising iPhone 6s to older iPhone owners through App Store popups

Apple has begun advertising the iPhone 6s to older iPhone users through the App Store, as spotted by @Dirk_Gently on Twitter. If a user browses the App Store, perhaps updating apps, with an iPhone 5s or earlier device, a modal popup may appear over the top of the view promoting the iPhone 6s as a ‘ridiculously powerful’ upgrade. Users are directed to learn more or ‘upgrade now’ which takes them to the Apple Store app to buy the new phone directly. The ad code appears to have been included alongside iOS 9.2.

Yahoo’s new Video Guide app offers universal search across streaming services

Yahoo today released a new “Yahoo Video Guide” app for mobile devices that acts as one central location for users to find content from across a long list of competitive video services and networks.

The app allows users to search from one place and then offers links to buy or start streaming the content in other apps like iTunes, Amazon, Netflix, HBO GO, and many others. So you’ll still need to be a subscriber, have the app downloaded, and or purchase the content once the Yahoo Video Guide app redirects you.

And while you can just search for something you’re looking for, the app also has a Mood Picker feature that lets users pick a from GIFs to search through curated lists.

Yahoo of course has its own Yahoo Screen app for mobile devices, but it also links to content on iTunes, Amazon Video, Hulu, Netflix, HBO GO, ABC, FOX, CBS, NBC, Xfinity, YouTube, A&E, BET, Cartoon Network, Cinemax, Comedy Central, Disney, Food Network, and others. In total it says it’s promoting over 30 video services through the new Video Guide app.

The Yahoo Video Guide iPhone app is available to download for free on the U.S. App Store now.

Steady Square is a new iOS ‘game’ that secretly allows you to use 3D Touch to weigh things

Update 12/10: Steady Square has now released an update that removes the “Training Mode” in the app that allowed the scale functionality.

[tweet https://twitter.com/walderston/status/675095598874365953 align=’center’]

When Apple released the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus with 3D Touch, developers quickly started to realize that 3D Touch could be used for much more than what Apple had originally revealed. It was revealed that the 3D Touch display technology can be used to create a real digital scale app, allowing users to place items on the screen of their iPhone and discover how much they weighed.

The first attempt at releasing a digital scale app onto the App Store, however, failed thanks to Apple rejecting it due to it not being “appropriate” for the App Store. There are several reasons one can speculate as to why Apple feels a digital scale app is not appropriate, but now one developer has gotten around Apple’s ban on the scale apps.

Nuance releases new Dragon Anywhere app on iOS w/ continuous cloud-based dictation

Earlier this year, popular speech recognition company Nuance announced that it was launching a new iOS app with a plethora of new voice recognition. We covered the new app in detail in August, but now, Nuance’s Dragon Anywhere app is available on the App Store.

Dragon Anywhere on iOS offers incredibly accurate dictation, all based in the cloud. Nuance touts that the app allows for full documents to be composed on the go, all with your voice, and subsequently shared via services like Dropbox and Evernote.

With the required cloud-based subscriptions, your transcriptions are constantly syncing to the cloud and are always update to date on all of your devices. There’s no time limit on dictation and users can talk uninterrupted throughout the process.

One of the new features of the app is auto-text. This is essentially pre-set document formats. Nuance has demonstrated this with corporations especially. For instance, an insurance company could share a text setup of a claim form with all of their employees. Then, employees could seamlessly dictate the claim into the pre-developed form without having to take anytime to format the document itself.

Dragon Anywhere is available now on the App Store. There’s a one week free trial, after which you’ll need to register for a subscription. Subscriptions range from $15/month to $150/year. The app currently supports US English, although it will be updated “later this year” with UK English and German support.

Nuance Dragon Anywhere Now Available for iOS

iPhone and iPad Users Can Leverage Cloud-Based, Professional-Grade Dictation for Mobile Productivity

Burlington, Mass. – December 3, 2015 – Nuance Communications, Inc. (NASDAQ: NUAN) today announced the availability of Dragon Anywhere for iOS mobile devices. Already available for Android devices, Dragon Anywhere offers continuous, cloud-based dictation – no time or length limits – robust voice formatting and editing, and synchronization of custom features with supported Dragon software for PCs and Macs.

Ideal for field workers, lawyers, social workers, public safety officers, and other professionals who often work outside of an office, Dragon Anywhere allows full documents to be composed, edited, formatted, and distributed via voice, directly from a mobile device. Completed or drafted documents can be shared via email, a cloud-sharing service like Dropbox, or as a note through Evernote, all by voice.

With nearly three-quarters of the total U.S. workforce driving towards mobility by 2020, as forecasted by IDC, maintaining consistent workflows across devices like PCs and Macs with smartphones and tablets will remain central to mobile workforce productivity. Dragon Anywhere offers individuals who need to document and report on-the-go simple ways to continue working, while synchronizing custom words and auto-text commands with desktop devices running Nuance’s Dragon software. Workers who often dictate specialized words, phrases, and customer and product names specific to their business will have the ability to add customized terminology on all of their supported devices, be it a PC, a Mac or an iOS or Android device.

“We are excited to expand the availability of Dragon Anywhere to iOS, further empowering the mobile workforce to more easily complete time-consuming documentation  and achieve greater levels of productivity away from the office,” said Peter Mahoney, senior vice president and general manager of Dragon.

Availability
Dragon Anywhere is available as a subscription service in the United States and Canada on the Nuance online store, with multiple subscription options available, including a one-week free trial. Subscriptions range from $15.00 per month to $150.00 per year.

Dragon Anywhere is currently available in US English and will be available in UK English and German on iOS and Android devices later this year.

Dragon Anywhere requires iOS 8.1or higher (iPad 3+, iPhone 5+, iPad Mini 1+) or Android 4.4+ phones and tablets.

Media information and multimedia collateral are available via the Dragon Press Kit.

Apple’s App Store has a copyright infringement problem, business owner claims

Software on Apple’s App Store may be reviewed by human editors and approved before distribution, but one business owner claims the iPhone maker is not doing enough to prevent copyright infringement. The Roanoke Times published a piece this week highlighting the issue of paid iOS apps scraping content from the web and packaging it in paid apps. While developer relations issues often get a lot of attention, the problem with the App Store according to Brian Raub is not a story heard often…

Apple TV expands App Store categories beyond games and entertainment

Apple TV users should notice several new App Store categories when browsing for new content on tvOS. After initially launching without a dedicated categories section live in late October, Apple pushed the new section to new Apple TVs without a software update earlier this month. The latest expansion brings the total number of tvOS app categories to seven, up from five initially, which should further improve new app discovery.

Apple celebrates App Store records as it notes iTunes Connect’s usual holiday break

Apple has posted the dates of the usual holiday shutdown of iTunes Connect, running for eight days from 22 to 29 December inclusive. During this time, developers will not be able to submit either new apps or updates to existing ones.

Developers can still schedule apps for release during these dates, but they will need to be submitted and approved beforehand. Other iTunes Connect functionality, such as access to analytics data, will remain available.

In the post on its developer website, Apple notes the record downloads, revenue and active customers for the App Store.

Because of your incredible apps, the App Store crossed 100 billion cumulative downloads. Revenue from the App Store increased 25% year over year, and the number of transacting customers grew 18%, setting a new all-time record. We want to thank you for all your hard work and dedication to our platforms.

Apple announced at the start of the year that developers have now collectively earned more than $10B from the App Store.

Each 15 second video starts with the same Apple TV graphic, then promotes a popular game or video service app on the new Apple TV with some gameplay or a popular show available on the service, and ends with the same multicolor graphic. So far these clips promote Netflix, HBO NOW, Asphalt 8, Disney Infinity 3.0 Edition: Star Wars, and Crossy Road. You can view each one below:

Adobe creative professionals offer first hands-on impressions using iPad Pro [Video]

Adobe is one company patiently waiting for the launch of the new iPad Pro as the firm in recent months has prepared for what it expects to be a big user base of professionals interested in its various creative mobile apps on the device. Sharing in the excitement for the launch scheduled for later this week, Adobe just released the video above showing off some of the possibilities of its apps on the new iPad and giving us one our first looks at hands-on impressions with the iPad ahead of product reviews going live.

In addition to offering some previews of upcoming mobile app improvements at its Max conference earlier this year, the company has worked hard to optimize several of its apps that are bound to be popular on the new larger iPad. Apps ready to go for the launch include Photoshop Fix, Photoshop Sketch, Photoshop Mix and Comp CC.

[youtube=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7TVywEv2-0E]

Apple confirmed earlier today that the new 12.9-inch iPad Pro will go on sale Wednesday, November 11th in 40 countries, while the device will hit Apple retail stores sometime later this week. In Apple’s press release, Adobe’s vice president of Products Scott Belsky called the company’s work on software for the device an “industry-advancing collaboration that millions of Adobe and Apple customers will benefit from.”

“iPad Pro enables new forms of mobile creativity that will help transform how creatives work,” said Scott Belsky, vice president of Products at Adobe. “With the larger iPad Pro screen and lightning-fast performance, creatives will be able to take full advantage of Adobe’s family of Creative Cloud mobile apps. For example, the ability to manipulate a 50-megapixel image right on iPad Pro in Photoshop Fix and then send that image to Photoshop CC on a desktop, for further refinement, is the kind of industry-advancing collaboration that millions of Adobe and Apple customers will benefit from.”

While there haven’t been many hands-on videos since Apple first unveiled the device at its press event in September, we did get a look at Disney and Pixar animators playing with the device and offering their first impressions last month.

Roundup: The best apps and games for the new Apple TV

The Apple TV has been available for a week now and the tvOS App Store is estimated to include over 1,000 apps, with more coming online every day. There’s a pretty good selection of titles, with a heavy focus on gaming. Developers are still figuring out how to use the touchpad Siri Remote in interesting and new ways but the initial launch is promising for sure. We’ve rounded up our favourite apps and games for the new Apple TV so far …

Google Drive for iOS gets improved sharing experience w/ notifications & more

Google Drive updates arriving today include new features for the service’s iOS app including sharing notifications and what Google promises will be a ‘consistent sharing experience across platforms.”

As part of its Drive mobile app updates today, both users of the iOS and Android apps can now enable notifications for when files are shared with them. Not only is it a notification, but it also acts as a quick link to jump right into the file or folder. And in addition, Google notes that “If a file/folder owner has notifications turned on and someone requests access to their content, the owner will be notified of the request instantly on their mobile device so they can quickly grant access.”

Another feature in the update for the Google Drive iOS app is what Google describes as a new consistent sharing experience, which essentially means the iOS app sharing experience is now on par with the Drive app on other platforms. You’ll notice the addition of an option to add a custom message when sharing:

We’re implementing a more consistent sharing experience in Drive (and the Docs editor apps too!) across platforms, including the ability for people using the Drive iOS app to add custom messages to recipients directly from the app when sharing a file.

The updated Google Drive app for iPhone and iPad is available now.

Feature Request: Airbnb’s Apple TV app is perfect for a concierge-style experience for guests

Feature Request is a new regular 9to5Mac series where authors offer their opinion on how to improve popular hardware or software products.

A lot of the apps on the new Apple TV bring similar experiences as on iOS to the big screen, but we’re bound to see some unique apps designed specifically for the living room that perhaps didn’t make a lot of sense on smaller or mobile devices. One example of this and my first Feature Request: Airbnb should add a concierge-style experience for guests through its new Apple TV app.
