History

The original Apple Watch (later called Series 0) was released on April 24, 2015, after years of rumors. While there was a lot of initial hype around it, the third-party watchOS apps were slow to launch due to API limitations. Native apps were available in watchOS 2. The original watch came in 38mm and 42mm sizes.

The Series 2 Watch was released on September 16th, 2016 along with a Series 1 Watch. The Series 2 included the S2 chip, built-in GPS, and water-proof construction. The Series 1 included the S2, but lacked GPS and waterproofing.

The Series 3 Watch was released on September 22, 2017, and it included an LTE option and the S3 chip. The Series 4 Watch was released on September 21, 2018. New hardware included the S4 Chip, Electrical heart sensor w/ ECG app, and larger display (40mm and 44mm sizes).

Apple Watch Series 5 was announced during Apple’s fall event on September 10, 2019. Customers were able to purchase the device later that day, and it was released on September 20. The headline feature for this model was the wearable’s always-on display. The new display always shows the time and complications and is also the first from the company to include a built-in compass.

Apple launched international emergency services to every cellular model. Series 5 also brought back ceramic white, and new natural brush and space black titanium models.

Apple Watch Series 6 was unveiled on September 15, 2020 at the “Time Flies” event alongside the more affordable SE and new iPad Air. New features of the Series 6 include blood oxygen monitoring, new watch colors, faster S6 chip, new watch faces, and more.

Apple Watch Series 4 resolution likely 384×480, apps capable of showing much more content

Last week, after Apple announced its September event for next Wednesday, we got our hands on some marketing images of the new iPhone Xs and the new Apple Watch Series 4. The most interesting aspect of the marketing image for Apple Watch Series 4 is probably a new watch face they used for the picture, which has at least 9 different complications (depending on what you count as a complication).

Today, we’ve been able to figure out the probable screen resolution for the 42mm version of this new device. We believe, from looking at some information found on the latest watchOS 5 beta, that the resolution will be 384×480. For comparison, the resolution on the current 42mm Apple Watch Series 3 is 312×390. Apple is going to achieve this significantly higher resolution by reducing the size of the bezels and making the screen a little bit larger. This new device will also probably feature a higher PPI, which also contributes to the higher resolution.

Apple Watch and Bluetooth car audio — the last step before leaving my iPhone behind

There are two things I do with my iPhone on-the-go that my Apple Watch hasn’t been able to do: play podcasts and take photos and video. The upcoming watchOS 5 software update solves the podcast problem, and I have a dedicated camera for shooting without my iPhone. But the inability to pair the Apple Watch with Bluetooth car audio remains a sticking point.

Using the new Apple Watch Podcasts app in watchOS 5

Apple Watch has always been able to play music on its own — first by syncing with iPhone, then by standalone streaming — but podcast playback has been much harder to achieve. A few apps have helped reduce the friction, but official Apple Podcast support has been at the top of my wish list.

Starting with watchOS 5, currently in developer beta and likely released in September, Apple Watch Series 1 and higher will finally have its own Podcasts app. For podcast listeners, this update will make cellular connectivity even more compelling and make leaving your iPhone behind a bit easier.

Comment: The Apple Watch Series 4 is going to take the wearable mainstream

In my last Apple Watch Diary piece, I said that there were two things which might sell me on the idea of upgrading from my Series 3 to the upcoming Series 4. One was a more responsive Siri, but the bigger one was more data on the screen.

Apple may allow more characters in text fields, to display more of an upcoming appointment, for example. That too might be handy. Third […] it could allow more complications. If it did that, I’d be sold straight away.

As we yesterday exclusively revealed, we will indeed be seeing additional complications …

Almost 90% of Apple Watch buyers choosing the Series 1 over the Series 3

A new market intelligence report has an interesting mix of news for Apple today. On the plus side, the Apple Watch continues to dominate the market, with a 41% market share – almost twice the share of second-placed Fitbit, at 21%. And the smartwatch market as a whole grew 37% year-on-year last quarter.

But there were two pieces of bad news also …

Comment: Wear OS revamp shows why Apple was right to choose a rectangular Watch face

Google has today unveiled a redesign of its Android smartwatch platform, Wear OS. A key element of this is what the company calls a ‘notification stream’ – scrollable notifications that work in a similar way to Apple Watch ones.

For Android smartwatch owners, I’m sure it’s an improvement. But what strikes me more than anything about it is just how terrible it looks on a round watch face …

Apple Watch Diary: The two things that might sell me on an Apple Watch Series 4

We today saw a not-unexpected sign that we’re getting closer to some new Apple Watch models: new model numbers have been registered in a Eurasian database. In all likelihood, the new Watches will be announced in September, alongside this year’s iPhones.

Although I went from being a smart watch skeptic to not wanting to be without my Apple Watch, I would still say it’s not a product I get excited about. A new Mac or a iPad, yes. A new iPhone, somewhat less – though the iPhone X was a definite exception. But the Watch, not so much.

The Apple Watch is very much a utilitarian product for me. I’m really glad it’s there, but I don’t do anything more than glance at it as I use it …

Apple registers six new Apple Watch models in Eurasian database ahead of announcement next month

Apple has registered several new Apple Watch model identifiers in the Eurasian economic database, as spotted by Consomac. Apple is expected to unveil the new watches at its iPhone event in September.

The ‘Series 4’ is listed across a total of six model identifiers, and is noted as shipping with watchOS 5. This filings suggests a slimming down of the lineup compared to what Apples offers with Apple Watch Series 3.
