Purported photos of 5.5-inch ‘iPhone 6L’ show 2915mAh battery, wider display panel

Site default logo image

Asia-based rumor site Apple Daily has acquired photos of what it claims are the next-generation iPhone, including the 5.5-inch model we’ve seen much less of in recent weeks. The two photos above show the larger device (with the purple interior) paired with a 4.7-inch version. The wider 5.5-inch model is to the right and the 4.7 display panel is on the left. While some may note that the part on the right does not appear much larger than the part on the left, it is possible that the image’s perspective does not highlight the size differentiation well.

The larger model, which Apple Daily claims will be called ‘iPhone 6L’ also sports a larger 2915mAh battery (seen below), compared to the 1810mAh in the 4.7-inch device and 1560 mAh in the iPhone 5s. The larger display area and form-factor allows Apple to squeeze a much larger battery pack into the phone, but it is currently unclear if this will mean stronger battery life. It’s uncertain if the larger display and more powerful chip rumored for the bigger phone will counterbalance the effects of the bigger battery pack…

Apple shareholders file lawsuit over anti-poaching agreements, claim gross mismanagement and more

Photo: mashable.com

Apple shareholders are the latest to jump into the fray of a lawsuit against Apple over its anti-poaching agreements with a number of other tech companies. As we’ve previously reported, Apple, Google, Intel, Adobe, and a laundry list of other companies allegedly created illegal pacts to avoid hiring each others’ engineers, allowing each employer to keep its wages low without running the risk of a competitor snatching up its competition with a better deal.

Now, a little over a week after a class action settlement was rejected by the court for being too low, Apple shareholder R. Andre Klein has filed a derivitive complaint on behalf of all Apple shareholders (embedded below) accusing the company of “breach of fiduciary duty, gross mismanagement, waste of corporate assets, and breach of the duty of honest services.”

Tim Cook takes up Phil Schiller’s Ice Bucket Challenge during diversity week beer bash (Video)

Tim-Cook-WWDC-01

Update: Apple has posted an official version of this video to its YouTube channel. See the video below.

Apple CEO Tim Cook took up his marketing chief’s call to participate in the Ice Bucket Challenge to raise awareness for ALS during the company’s beer bash earlier tonight. During the party, which is part of Apple’s week of diversity-focused events, Cook took the stage to have a bucket of ice-cold water poured over his head.

As we reported last night, Phil Schiller was the first member of the Apple executive team to take the charity-focused challege, and petitioned Tim Cook to do the same. The two join other tech executives such as Mark Zuckerberg and Satya Nadella in helping raise awareness and money for ALS.

Beats Music releases 25th anniversary documentary on Spike Lee’s ‘Do The Right Thing’

Screen Shot 2014-08-14 at 6.40.15 PM

Apple-owned Beats Music has released a 22-minute documentary to mark the 25th anniversary of Spike Lee’s Do The Right Thing, which was released in theaters on June 30th, 1989. In the documentary, Lee is joined by members of the cast and crew to revisit the Brooklyn neighborhood where the movie was filmed.

The documentary also includes footage from a star-studded block party thrown by Beats to celebrate the anniversary of the movie’s theatrical debut.

Like its new parent company Apple, Beats continues to position itself as more than a company making a product, but a cultural icon that has an impact on the world around it. You can watch the full documentary below:

Phil Schiller joins the ranks of tech execs taking the Ice Bucket Challenge

schiller

Apple’s Senior VP of Marketing posted a few photos of himself taking the Ice Bucket Challenge on Twitter today. The challenge was created by former Boston College baseball player Pete Frates in order to raise awareness for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (more commonly known as ALS or Lou Gehrig’s disease).

The challenge itself involves dumping a bucket of ice water over one’s head, then selecting a number of friends to do the same. Those who are challenged to participate but fail to do so within 24 hours are asked to donate to the ALS Association. Donations to the organization have reached over $1.35 million since the challenge started catching on in late July, a spokesperson said. During the same time last year that amount was only $22,000.

[tweet https://twitter.com/pschiller/status/499751668414566401 align=’center’]

Schiller isn’t the first tech executive to jump in on the trend. He was preceded by the likes of Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg and Microsoft’s Satya Nadella. After taking the challenge, Schiller took to Twitter to call on a few others to join him, specifically naming “Chris, Kim, and Tim.” The Chris named in the tweet appears to be NCIS: Los Angeles actor Chris O’Donnell, who was also tagged in the tweet.

Interesting side note: Schiller’s tweet and photo are geotagged from a beach in Half Moon Bay, Califorina.

New job listings indicate Apple’s aim to bolster retail marketing team

Site default logo image

Burberry Group Plc CEO Angela Ahrendts At The London Stock Exchange

Following the recent hire of a former Burberry and Nike social marketing executive to run Apple’s new social media arm, a few job listings on Apple’s website point to an attempt to bolster the company’s retail marketing team. A few of the positions were outlined by ifo Apple Store earlier today and seem to point toward an increased focus on building and maintaining customer loyalty to the Apple brand.

We’ve heard time and again that Apple customers, particularly iPhone users, are among the most loyal, but it seems Apple believes there’s still more to be done in that department. One of these new job listings calls for a “Program Manager — Loyalty, Global Retail Marketing,” which would focus on creating “learning and services strategies” designed to inspire loyalty among Apple’s user base.

Samsung trolls iPhone-toting ‘wall huggers’ at power outlets in major airports

Last month Samsung ramped up the anti-Apple rhetoric with a new ad campaign that depicted iPhone users as “wall huggers,” constantly tethered to a power outlet due to the inferior battery in their non-Samsung smartphones. Today Cnet reports that the company has taken its campaign one step further by trolling real-life iPhone users at power outlets throughout major airports.

The new ads take the form of posters near power outlets that read, “Samsung Galaxy S5 with Ultra Power Saver Mode,” followed by a tagline that appears to poke at Apple’s own recent ad campaign: “So you have the power to be anywhere but here.” If you’d like to take a gander at the latest salvo in the ever-escalating flame war between Apple and Samsung, you’ll be able to do just that very soon at JFK, O’Hare, and Midway airports. Samsung says even more airports could be getting the ads if they’re successful in the first three.

Apple bans potentially dangerous chemicals from iPhone and iPad assembly process (Update: Apple statement)

Five months after Chinese and American labor watchdog groups petitioned Apple to investigate the use of potentially hazardous materials in its iPhone and iPad assembly process, the company has announced that it will make changes banning the use of at least two chemicals, the Associated Press reported today. The chemicals in question are benzene and n-hexane, which are tied to lukemia and nerve damage, respectively.

After conducting a four-month study, Apple says it determined that there was no evidence to suggest that these chemicals posed a threat to workers assembling its devices in twenty-two factories, but announced that it would take steps to ensure that it would not become a problem in the future. To that end, both benzene and n-hexane have been banned from the assembly line.

Facebook 13.1 released for iOS, boasts crash rate reduction of over 50 percent

Facebook released version 13.1 of its iOS client today with a rather uninteresting change log noting that the app had received “bug fixes” and nothing more. However, over on Facebook’s engineering blog the company has outlined what exactly went into this fix, and it turns out the update contains a significant fix that will resolve over 50% of reported crashes.

According to the blog post, the issue arose from a file corruption error that appeared in iOS’s Core Data system:

Verizon announces plans to launch VoLTE service in Q4 2014, will still release CDMA-capable phones until 2016

Site default logo image

Verizon Wireless has announced its plans to launch support for Voice over LTE service (or VoLTE) on its cellular network later this year, according to FierceWireless. However, the company says it has moved back its plan to release a VoLTE-only phone until 2016, and will continue releasing CDMA-capable phones until that time. Such a device was originally anticipated for the end of 2014.

The carrier originally announced earlier this year that it would support the new voice service, which provides higher-quality phone calls by utilizing high-speed data connections, but declined at the time to say exactly when it would happen. Other U.S. carriers, including T-Mobile and AT&T, have already started rolling the technology out in select markets.

Alleged iPhone 6 backplate appears in new, high-resolution leaked photos

Site default logo image

iphone6-cam

New photos of the iPhone 6 surfaced tonight from Sonny Dickson that appear to show the backplate of the upcoming iPhone 6.  Dickson says that these photos were obtained from a source with access to the part, and they do appear to be legitimate.

The first photo, seen above, shows a close-up view of the cutouts for the camera (which appears to be raised), circular True Tone flash, rear microphone, and Apple logo. While it’s entirely possible that these photos are faked, the level of visible detail would make this quite the con job if that turned out to be the case (see the scuffs, scratches, dents, and texture).

Of course, we’ve seen fake wear on iPhone photos before, including the last batch leaked by Sonny, which featured fake fingerprint smudges across the screen.

Apple unsurprisingly working with more healthcare providers ahead of iOS 8’s Health launch

Site default logo image

health_hero_2x

Reuters noted today that Apple is working with healthcare professionals at hospitals across the country, including Mount Sinai and John Hopkins, in preparation for the rollout of the HealthKit system in iOS 8. The goal is to ensure that medical personnel are ready to read data from the system when it ships later this year.

This move is hardly surprising, as Apple intends HealthKit to serve as a collection place for all of a user’s health-related data, which can be valuable—even lifesaving—during a medical emergency. In fact, the Mayo Clinic demoed the first HealthKit-enabled application earlier this year during WWDC:

New images provide clearest look yet at iPhone 6 front panel

Site default logo image

Images of what appears to be the face and screen assembly of the next iPhone have appeared on the Taiwanese blog AppleClub [translation]. In the photos, you can see both the inside and outside of the 4.7″ device’s front panel. For the most part it looks just like the current-generation iPhone 5s, though it’s obviously much larger.

Unfortunately it’s impossible to tell from these photos if the phone is utilizing a glass or sapphire crystal display. Most analysts expect this model to ship with a sapphire crystal screen, though others have claimed that only the larger 5.5″ model would feature that. Both models recently entered mass production and are expected to be revealed at an unannounced media event on September 9th.

More photos of the front panel are below:

Court rejects earlier $324 million anti-poaching settlement between Apple, Intel, Google, and Adobe

A judge has rejected a settlement that was reached earlier this year between employees of Apple, Intel, Google, and Adobe and their respective companies, CNBC reported today. According to reports from the courtroom, Judge Lucy Koh ruled that the settlement was not high enough and should actually be $380 million.

The lawsuit was brought against the tech giants in question by current and former employees who believed (correctly) that their employers had created agreements to avoid attempting to hire engineers from one another. The idea was that if no competitors were making offers, each company was free to pay its employees whatever it wanted without having to worry about them jumping ship for a better offer.

Apple tests Family Sharing notice on App Store pages ahead of iOS 8 launch

Site default logo image

famshare

According to a new tag discovered on iOS App Store pages by iFun, it would appear that Apple is testing a new label for applications that work with the upcoming Family Sharing feature in iOS 8. The feature, which was announced at WWDC, allows a family to share a single list of purchased music, movies, and iOS apps, all charged to a single credit card. It also includes parental controls so that purchases require permission from the card holder.

Apple has given third-party developers the option to opt-out of this program, however, which would require users to purchase such apps once for each member of the family, rather than once for everyone. To ensure that there’s no confusion among those looking to buy apps for a whole family, it looks like Apple will be labeling apps that support the feature the same way it highlights apps that Game Center, in-app purchases, and other iOS features.

The update doesn’t appear to have rolled out on the App Store just yet, but the company says it will be available later today. The Yelp app is free for iPhone and iPad.

Microsoft wants to make a retail splash near Apple’s iconic 5th Ave. cube

Microsoft wants to build a new 8,700 sq. ft. retail store on New York’s Fifth Avenue, just a few blocks away from Apple’s cube, the New York Daily News reported today. The two-story building located at 677 Fifth Avenue is currently vacant, but the Redmond-based software giant wants to setup shop near one of its competitors most iconic locations.

Microsoft has been walking in the shadow of Apple’s retail success for years now. In 2009 the company poached George Blakenship from Cupertino’s retail arm to run its own (weirdly similar) stores. Since then, the Microsoft has been taking advantage of open spaces near a few Apple stores to try to get in on the action.

Sprint gives up its plans to acquire T-Mobile USA over regulatory concerns (updated)

Site default logo image

John Legere

Sprint’s plans to buy out the U.S. arm of T-Mobile from Deutsche Telekom came to an end today, the Wall Street Journal reported. According to the Journal, Sprint’s leadership was concerned that it would be too difficult to get United States regulators to agree to the merger.

The announcement is not yet official, but is said to be planned for Wednesday. If the merger had suceeded, the two companies would have united under the Sprint banner, possibly abandoning all of the “un-carrier” moves made by T-Mobile in recent years, including free one-week iPhone test drives on the network and unlimited music streaming on a variety of services.

Apple warns Yosemite testers of ongoing iCloud Drive maintenance

Screen Shot 2014-08-05 at 6.08.14 PM

Apple has started sending out emails to members of the AppleSeed beta testing program informing them of ongoing maintenance to iCloud Drive. According to the message, due to the in-development nature of the updated iCloud backend, users should expect to see more downtime than they experienced with older versions of OS X.

Unlike the developer previews, however, Apple notes that these outages are not likely affect files stored in iCloud. Twice previously the company has wiped all data uploaded to iCloud Drive. Of course, it’s important to keep backups of important files, as Apple points out that unforeseen issues with betas could lead to data loss.

Kyocera’s Sapphire Shield smartphone display takes a beating in new stress test video

Screen Shot 2014-08-05 at 4.14.16 PM

Kyocera has published a new video of its Sapphire Shield smartphone cover in action, pitting it against standard impact-resistant glass in a few drop and scratch tests. As you might expect, the sapphire cover fared much better than the glass. While the glass display was easily scratched and shattered using a piece of granite, the Sapphire Shield looked like it had just come out of the box.

The Sapphire Shield can currently be found on Kyocera’s Brigadier smartphone, which became available from Verizon last week. The phone is currently one of a few to sport a sapphire display, though it’s widely believed that Apple will be debuting such a device early next month.

You can see the full Sapphire Shield stress test below:
