watchOS 5.1.2 for Apple Watch is now available. For Apple Watch Series 4 customers, the update unlocks the promised ECG app that captures a live electrocardiogram using the Apple Watch heart rate sensor and Digital Crown. The new watchOS update also includes new Apple app complication options on the new Infograph and Infograph Modular watch faces and more.

I ran my second half marathon race on Saturday with Apple Watch, and the overall experience was fantastic — aside from a few quirks. I trained much more ahead of time and applied lessons learned from the experience a year ago. Aside from better training that resulted in shaving nine minutes off my year-ago time, optimizing for battery life on the long run made the biggest difference in improving the experience this year.

watchOS 5.1.1 was pushed out earlier today following a spate of bricked Watches last week for some devices updating to watchOS 5.1. However, it looks like this update has also tipped the hat on a few upcoming goodies for Series 4 owners.

UPDATE 12/6: With the release of watchOS 5.1.2 and iOS 12.1.1, Apple included a new verification that makes this workaround ineffective. ECG will only be available for models of Apple Watch purchased in the US.

One of the new features of Apple Watch Series 4 is the ability to take an Electrocardiogram of the user’s heart through a series of new sensors on the back of the device and on the revised digital crown. Since this feature requires regulatory approval by health authorities, Apple Watch ECG will roll out to users in the United States first, where Apple was able to get clearance from the FDA.

If you’re in the UK and were wondering how long it might take before Apple is allowed to enable the ECG feature on the Apple Watch Series 4, the news doesn’t look good.

Apple obtained FDA clearance to use the feature in the US just one day before the launch of the Watch, though Apple has not yet enabled it. But despite a study suggesting an accuracy rate of 98% in detecting AFib, Apple may face a much tougher battle in gaining similar clearance in the UK …

The Apple Watch succeeded in converting me from a smartwatch skeptic to an Apple Watch convert, but I held out on upgrading until the Series 3 came along.
