A new generation of iPhone

Check out our top stories on iPhone 8:

Apple has announced the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus alongside the iPhone X at its September event.

The iPhone 8 models bring some solid upgrades over the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus including a new processor, wireless charging, upgraded cameras, a new glass back, and more.

Both the iPhone 8, 8 Plus, and X feature the A11 Bionic processor. The all new chip has four efficiency cores that are up to 70% faster than A10 Fusion and two performance cores that are up to 25% faster. The new models also have an Apple designed GPU that offers up to 30% better performance than the A10 chip.

Comment: Is it just me, or would the iPhone 8 look terrible with a white notch?

The iPhone 8 dummy model industry is hitting its peak production a month or so ahead of the real thing. We’re seeing a rapidly-growing number of photos and videos of these impressively-detailed dummy devices to go along with the renders and mockups of the screen.

Let me start by admitting I’m biased where bezels are concerned …

New mockups show ‘double notch’ concept, and how apps might look on the iPhone 8

Steve Troughton-Smith yesterday helped us learn more about the likely iPhone 8 screen layout, and he’s since shown one possible approach to restoring the symmetry of the screen. He’s produced a mockup (above) showing how the Home button could be presented as a ‘notch,’ matching the physical one at the top of the screen.

He’s quick to point out this is not something he’s found in the code, but rather just an idea he thought it would be fun to play with …

Unlikely report claims iPhone 8 launch still delayed until November

New reporting from The Korea Herald appears to be surfacing what is likely old information about the iPhone 8 launch. Citing industry sources, the report claims the OLED iPhone won’t be unveiled until November due in part to design decisions with Touch ID not yet being finalized.

Ming-Chi Kuo of KGI Securities, which often presents reliable information, released a more optimistic forecast earlier this week predicting the OLED iPhone will debut with very limited supply alongside the new LCD iPhones.

HomePod firmware provides detailed look at iPhone 8 screen layout, resizable Home button, more

The HomePod firmware accidentally made public by Apple, which replicates code apparently intended for the iPhone 8, is proving a goldmine of information. Just yesterday, we learned that it is likely to support ultra-slow-mo video capture of 240fps at 1080p (compared to 720p for the iPhone 7) and more.

Today, Steve Troughton-Smith has been digging into the code for a virtual Home button …

More iPhone details from HomePod firmware: 1080p240fps video capture, Enhanced HDR, MultiBiometrics support

iOS developer Guilherme Rambo has unearthed even more strings hidden inside of Apple’s HomePod firmware, which could possibly point to new features in upcoming iPhone hardware.

The strings point to the presence of a camera capable of supporting 240 fps video capture at 1080p. The current iPhone 7 is also able to capture video at 240 fps, but it’s limited to just 720p resolution. 240 fps video capture results in smoother slow motion video, and having that video at full HD resolution would make for a significant increase in quality.

But that’s not the only new string that Rambo was able to dig up from the HomePod firmware…

iPhone 8 dummy unit shows larger display in compact casing, copper finish

As we approach the actual unveiling of the OLED iPhone expected next month, new dummy units based on recent leaks continue to surface showing how the iPhone 8 could look. Ben Miller has shared images of a new iPhone 8 dummy unit with the rumored copper/bronze/gold color while Benjamin Geskin has shared a cleaner looking render of the same color option.

Apple supplier reports huge orders of 3D sensing component ahead of iPhone 8

During its FQ4 conference call this morning, Apple supplier Lumentum reported a huge increase in orders for 3D sensing laser components thought to be included in the upcoming iPhone 8 to enable advanced augmented reality features, as noted by analyst Gene Munster at LoupVentures. To be specific, the company has $200M in orders during the quarter up from just $5 million in revenue for the 3D sensing tech during the June quarter.

Based on the new info from Lumentum, Munster is predicting around 55m units of the next-gen iPhone models with the 3D sensing camera tech this year and capacity for around 160m next year:

iPhone 8 may automatically silence notification sounds when you are looking at the screen

The iPhone 8 is widely reported to feature a front-facing 3D sensor which will enable face recognition for automatic unlock (supposedly replacing the need for Touch ID entirely). Moreover, code references suggest that the new OLED iPhone will be able to use that same sensor to enable even more sophisticated features, like automatically silencing notifications if the user is looking at the screen.

Glass back design corroborated by latest iPhone 7s, 7s Plus and iPhone 8 dummy units

Following on from our Saturday post, these latest dummy models (which we believe to accurately represent the design of the real devices) give a sense of what the glass back design will look like for the whole lineup, spanning the 7s, 7s Plus and radically-redesigned OLED model (marketing names unknown). Thanks to Sonny Dickson for passing these along.

It also rebuts some of the rumors we’ve seen circulating that the ‘7s’ phones would have a rear Touch ID sensor; these dummies clearly show that the devices largely resemble the existing iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus, albeit with some tweaks like the glass material (which means no antenna bands in sight!). KGI: iPhone 8 will launch with iPhone 7s, limited to three colors and short supply

KGI Securities is out with a new report offering fresh predictions for the upcoming iPhone launch expected as soon as next month. KGI expects Apple will announce all three new iPhones (4.7-inch LCD, 5.5-inch LCD, 5.8-inch OLED) in September and launch at the same time after previously believing the OLED iPhone could arrive later. Despite debuting simultaneously, KGI predicts the OLED iPhone will be severely supply constrained at launch…

Poll: Of the possible iPhone 8 colors seen to date, which is your favorite?

Despite some reports suggesting that the iPhone 8 might be available in limited colors, we’ve now seen mockups of quite a few possibilities.

KGI suggested that it would be available in fewer colors than normal, but didn’t get more specific than that. A Macotakara report suggested that it would not be available in white. Benjamin Geskin claimed that a new mirror-like option would be introduced. Yet another image showed black, silver, white and gold – but no rose gold.

And yet another possibility emerged over the weekend …

Foxconn exec says ‘estimated iPhone 8 is not cheap’ as new copper gold case image surfaces

Over the weekend, there were a couple interesting stories about the upcoming iPhone 8 originating from Weibo. A Foxconn vice president posted to his public social feed that the iPhone 8 will not be cheap, as yields of the OLED display are low (40% failure rate) due to the ‘special design’ (the custom top notch).

Separately, photos of a new iPhone 8 rear case color appeared online although the validity of the image is not clear. In addition to the usual black and white, the photos depict an OLED iPhone in a copper gold color. More photos after the break …
