Photographer pits iPhone X Portrait Lighting against real studio lighting [Video]

Alongside the introduction of the iPhone 8 Plus and X this fall, Apple introduced Portrait Lighting, a camera effect designed to simulate specific lighting conditions normally only found in a studio environment. These lighting effects, combined with the background-softening depth effect introduced wth the iPhone 7 Plus, are designed to make shooting professional looking portraits easy.

Putting this claim to the test, photographer Daniel DeArco used an iPhone X to compare the results Portrait Lighting to actual studio lighting in a comparison video.

With the lack of a physical home button of any kind with iPhone X, Apple has a new interaction metaphor: the home indicator. This is the thin bar that sits at the bottom of the iPhone screen.

At first glance, it might seem like an annoying blemish on the edge-to-edge design. But just like the notch at the top of the phone, the home indicator plays an important role.

iPhone X Diary: One week in, and I absolutely love this phone

The executive summary of this iPhone X Diary piece – almost a week in – is that I still love it, and I have found very little more to complain about.

Let’s start with the look and feel. I still love it. It still feels like a single slab of glass, and it has a really great tactile feel in the hand.

To me, the large size is a compromise. I do still really like the iPhone SE size, but it’s a compromise that pays off. The screen is large enough for content to feel immersive – I’ve even watched some Netflix on it – while still remaining reasonably pocketable. I can also comfortably hold it in my hand …
