iPhone walkie-talkie

Introduced in 2007 by Steve Jobs, iPhone is Apple’s flagship iOS device and easily its most popular product around the world. Software wise, it runs iOS and includes a large collection of mobile apps through the App Store.

Since its introduction, Apple has released at least one new phone every single year. In recent years, that has typically been in the fall. iPhones are sold through multiple retail channels including Apple Stores, cellular stores, Best Buy, and other major electronic retailers. iPhones can be bought with a single up front payment, financed through the iPhone Upgrade Program, or financed through a cellular carrier.

Apple’s smartphone has become much more than just a phone since its debut. The iPhone can act as your primary camera, music player, GPS device, email client, mobile banking system, messaging device, movie player, and much more.

Feature Request: Allow our Apple Watch to unlock our iPhone and iPad

Apple Watch to unlock an iPhone or iPad

Update: Apple implemented this request in iOS 14.5 and watchOS 7.4.

Face ID is normally a completely seamless way to unlock an iPhone and iPad: just swipe up and it unlocks automatically. At a time when we’re frequently wearing masks, however, it’s rather less seamless.

So we’d like to see Apple allow an unlocked Apple Watch to automatically unlock an iPhone and iPad …

Europe may force Apple to let other payment apps access NFC chip

Apple Watch NFC chip

Apple could be forced to allow third-party payment apps to access the NFC chip in the iPhone and Apple Watch without having to use Apple Pay. The European Union is considering new antitrust legislation in response to complaints by banks that Apple’s restrictions on access to the chip are anticompetitive.

Germany has already passed a law which would require this …

iOS 14: How to do Picture in Picture video multitasking on iPhone

One of the cool new features for the iPhone in iOS 14 is the addition of Picture in Picture video. This allows you to play video from one app whilst navigating around the rest of the device. The video will keep playing in a small thumbnail window, allowing for two app-at-a-time multitasking for the first time on the iPhone. Here’s how to use it.

Developers frustrated at just one day’s notice of iOS, iPadOS and watchOS rollout

Developers frustrated at Apple

There weren’t too many surprises in yesterday’s event, but there was one big one – and it was one which left developers frustrated. Apple gave just one day’s notice of the official rollout of iOS 14, iPadOS 14 and watchOS 7. This contrasts with the usual week or so developers get to prepare.

Not only did this leave them scrabbling to get updated versions of their apps completed, but some said that Apple’s developer tools were also not ready for the launch …

Apple patent suggests iPhone will get the same water-ejection system as Apple Watch

Apple Watch Series 2 was the first model to be entirely waterproof, and Apple introduced an important feature to keep the internal components protected. As you may know, Apple Watch has a water-ejection system in which the speaker expels water — and this might come to iPhone, according to a new patent registered by Apple.

Apple wins fresh patent for under-display Touch ID

Latest Apple patent for under-display Touch ID

Apple has today been awarded yet another patent for a form of under-display Touch ID. This would be another step forward in the company’s long-held ambition of ‘a single slab of glass,’ without bezel or notch.

The coronavirus crisis has of course made Face ID a much less effective method of unlocking an iPhone as it (generally) doesn’t work when wearing a mask …

Tested: Chargeasap Flash 2 is a beefy power-bank with wireless charging

Chargeasap Flash 2

I normally decline power-bank reviews on the grounds that, for the most part, when you’ve seen one, you’ve seen ’em all. The Zendure SuperTank Pro was an exception thanks to its ability to double the battery-life of a MacBook Pro, while the Chargeasap Flash 2 (just Flash from now on) is a rather neat travel solution more geared to iPhones, iPads, and – unusually – the Apple Watch.

That’s not to say that the Flash can’t power MacBooks too: it definitely can. It can output a total of 210W, which gives it the same ability as the Zendure to charge or power two MacBook Pros at the same time. But this one has a lower capacity, while its USP is an integral wireless charging pad that can charge not only an iPhone, but also an Apple Watch …

DJI OM4: The new gold standard for smartphone gimbals [Video]

The DJI OM4 is the successor to the Osmo Mobile 3, and what I’d consider to be the gold standard for smartphone gimbals. With every generation, DJI refines their gimbals further, making it easier for daily use in all of the important areas: portability, durability, and functionality. The OM4 is no different, as it introduces some innovative features.

A new analyst note from Gartner today estimates how the global smartphone market performed during the June quarter. While we already knew Apple’s iPhone shipments were likely close to flat based on the company’s reported quarterly revenue, today’s analyst note underscores how well iPhone performed relatively speaking as the global market saw a big 20% decline.

Drop Test: Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra’s new Gorilla glass impresses ahead of iPhone 12 launch

Gorilla Glass Victus Note 20 Ultra drop test vs iPhone

Corning announced its new Gorilla Glass Victus last month and Samsung is one of the first companies to use it with the new Galaxy Note 20 Ultra smartphone. In a new drop test, the latest from Gorilla Glass performed remarkably as it withstood 11 face-down 5-foot (1.5-meter) drops without a single crack on the screen while the iPhone 11 Pro Max didn’t do nearly as well.
