History

The original Apple Watch (later called Series 0) was released on April 24, 2015, after years of rumors. While there was a lot of initial hype around it, the third-party watchOS apps were slow to launch due to API limitations. Native apps were available in watchOS 2. The original watch came in 38mm and 42mm sizes.

The Series 2 Watch was released on September 16th, 2016 along with a Series 1 Watch. The Series 2 included the S2 chip, built-in GPS, and water-proof construction. The Series 1 included the S2, but lacked GPS and waterproofing.

The Series 3 Watch was released on September 22, 2017, and it included an LTE option and the S3 chip. The Series 4 Watch was released on September 21, 2018. New hardware included the S4 Chip, Electrical heart sensor w/ ECG app, and larger display (40mm and 44mm sizes).

Apple Watch Series 5 was announced during Apple’s fall event on September 10, 2019. Customers were able to purchase the device later that day, and it was released on September 20. The headline feature for this model was the wearable’s always-on display. The new display always shows the time and complications and is also the first from the company to include a built-in compass.

Apple launched international emergency services to every cellular model. Series 5 also brought back ceramic white, and new natural brush and space black titanium models.

Apple Watch Series 6 was unveiled on September 15, 2020 at the “Time Flies” event alongside the more affordable SE and new iPad Air. New features of the Series 6 include blood oxygen monitoring, new watch colors, faster S6 chip, new watch faces, and more.

Apple Watch Series 3 reviews: Freedom from iPhone great, but battery-life and connectivity issues

The first Apple Watch Series 3 reviews are out, and while the device is generally well-received, it also seems the LTE model is not without issues.

The headline feature of the LTE model – the freedom to leave your phone behind while jogging, working out in the gym or heading to the beach – is what’s selling it to most reviewers. The snappier performance is also appreciated.

But some are also reporting short battery-life and connectivity issues, with Apple acknowledging one problem currently affecting the device …

Review: Apple Watch Series 3 unlocks new potential with LTE, dramatically improved Siri

When the first generation Apple Watch debuted in 2015, people often called it the Dick Tracy watch because you could make phone calls from your wrist like the comic book strip detective known for his 2-way wrist radio. Apple Watch wasn’t fully there yet, however, because it needed a nearby iPhone to actually carry those phone calls. Answering the phone on your watch could be convenient, but it was mostly just a neat demo since you had to carry the iPhone anyway.

Fast forward to today and Apple Watch Series 3 finally lets you make phone calls without carrying your iPhone thanks to optional LTE, but calling is only a part of what cellular enables for the watch. Apple Watch Series 3 can be your dedicated tour guide on your wrist with Maps, your connection to friends and family with Messages, and your always-present personal assistant with Siri — and now even when you’re away from your iPhone.

After using Apple Watch Series 3 for several days, it’s clear to me that LTE largely fulfills the promises made by the original Apple Watch. If the idea of getting away from your iPhone without being totally disconnected gives you peace of mind, Apple Watch Series 3 with cellular is for you. Even without LTE, Apple Watch Series 3 delivers performance improvements and new features that can change how Apple Watch is used.

Any good 9to5Toys reader knows that Apple’s official first-party bands are way over-priced. While the quality is good, you can often find two or three nice alternatives on Amazon from other manufacturers for the price of one band at Apple. We’ve put together a list of our favorite bands below, covering a wide range of materials from leather and nylon to silicone and stainless steel. Head below for our top picks.

Comment: The best features of the Apple Watch will be the ones we hope you’ll never use

When the Apple Watch Series 3 was unveiled on Tuesday, all the attention was on the new LTE connectivity added to the latest model. But to my mind the far more significant announcement was something which will shortly be available on all Apple Watch models: the new heart-rate monitoring coming with watchOS 4.

There were four elements to this development, and I fully expect more to follow further down the line …

Investors and analysts unfazed by late availability of iPhone X, remain bullish

While it had been clear before the launch that Apple was struggling with iPhone X production, with everyone talking about extremely constrained supply, and some reports of a delayed launch, most were still surprised that the device wouldn’t begin shipping until November 3.

But investors seem unmoved by the news, AAPL’s stock price scarcely moving in pre-market trading, and analysts seem likewise unconcerned …

AT&T, Verizon, Sprint, and T-Mobile to support cellular Apple Watch Series 3

Update: AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon have all announced $10/month plans with an initial three months of free service.

Today’s announcement of the Apple Watch Series 3 with cellular support included details on how the device will function with wireless carrier plans. Apple mentioned that the phone number from the iPhone will remain the same and be usable on the Watch.

There is one obvious caveat though: to get the cellular functionality of your Watch, you may be required to pay an additional fee to your carrier. Only AT&T and Verizon have officially announced their price points as of today, but we’re expecting to learn more from other carriers soon.
