Peloton Stories April 13

Activist investors at Blackwells Capital aren’t happy with Peloton’s recent changes and are once again calling on the company to explore an acquisition from Apple. In a new report released this week, Blackwells Capital says that Peloton hasn’t made any substantive progress under new CEO Barry McCarthy, and in fact, “shareholders are worse off now than before.”

As reported by our colleagues at Connect The Watts, Peloton yesterday started rolling out support for Apple Watch heart rate integration to its Bike and Tread products. In conjunction with this announcement, Peloton has also started selling Apple Watch bands featuring a prominent Peloton logo.

Could this be a sign that, despite being competitors in the subscription fitness industry, Peloton is looking to cozy up to Apple?

Amid reports that companies like Amazon and Nike are internally mulling a potential acquisition of Peloton, Wedbush analysts say that they “would be shocked if Apple is not aggressively involved” in the bidding as well. In fact, Wedbush believes that it could be a “business model risk” for Apple if another company were to acquire Peloton…

Update: The Financial Times now reports that Nike has also discussed an acquisition of Peloton. The report also says: “Other buyers are also likely to emerge, said those briefed on the matter, potentially including Apple and large private equity buyers.”

Peloton’s struggles over the last several months have been well-documented, leading to speculation about a potential acquisition by a Big Tech company. While some investors have called on Peloton to consider a sale to Apple, a new report from The Wall Street Journal says that Amazon is expressing interest in a potential deal.

Peloton Stories January 24

On Thursday, CNBC reported that fitness unicorn Peloton was in dire straits. The company saw its value plummet on the news that they were “temporarily halting production of its connected fitness products as consumer demand wanes.” As the pandemic starts to move to the back of many minds, there’s been a significant drop in the number of people looking to buy expensive home workout equipment. Because of this, the idea of Apple purchasing Peloton has come back up. It has lingered for awhile, but now the idea is gaining more traction in the press. I think everyone needs to cool their jets.

As our colleagues have covered in detail over on Connect the Watts, Peloton’s 2022 is off to an incredibly rocky start. As the struggles mount, investors at Blackwells Capital LLC, which owns less than 5% of Peloton, are now calling on the company to fire CEO John Foley and explore a sale to Apple, Disney, or Nike.

Peloton Stories November 4, 2021

Popular connected fitness company Peloton reported its earnings for fiscal Q1 2022 today. The company missed expectations across the board, and it’s blaming Apple for some of its challenges. Specifically, like many other companies recently, Peloton says that Apple’s App Tracking Transparency platform is impacting its ability to gain new subscribers…

Hands-on: Sync your Apple Watch to Peloton with Watch Link [Video]

From 9to5Mac’s new sister site ConnectTheWattscovering all of the latest connected fitness news.

With Peloton recently removing the ability of Apple Watch users to pair with the Peloton Bike+ for any classes besides cycling, I was on the hunt to discover whether there was any other way to sync my Apple Watch to Peloton. Luckily, I quickly came across the Watch Link. (See below to get 10% off!)

Peloton Stories April 16, 2021

From 9to5Mac’s new sister site ConnectTheWatts:

One of the selling points of the newer, upgraded, and more expensive Peloton Bike+ was the inclusion of the Apple GymKit, an Apple platform that makes it very easy to pair the bike with your Apple Watch to see your heart rate and have your workouts directly imported into Apple Fitness and Apple Health. But Apple’s relationship with Peloton has always been a dicey one and a move this week by the rising star of connected fitness might disappoint users of both platforms.

Motion for iPhone is a new challenge-focused app to help Peloton users stay motivated

Since receiving my Peloton bike in the middle of May, it’s been a constant in my life. Outside of days I’ve not been at home, I have only taken one day off from riding. I’ve become immersed in the community over on Reddit where I’ve enjoyed the group rides, celebrating milestones, and just chatting about connected fitness. Peloton is an ecosystem instead of just being a fitness product. A new iPhone app, Motion, is a perfect example of the ecosystem expanding with new options to extend the built-in functionality.

Peloton Stories April 5, 2020

I’ve been exploring the world of Peloton since the exercise bike showed up in my home office last week. While Peloton does not work with GymKit, there are two Apple features that work with the workout system.

Peloton bikes and treadmills offer limited Apple Music integration for streaming music subscribers with linked accounts. Workouts tracked with the Peloton system can be saved to Apple’s Health app, too, although logging sessions with Apple Watch requires some configuration.
