[Update: FCC votes in favor] FCC to vote on Apple-backed plan to allow device makers to use 6GHz band

Apple Glasses could be one of two Apple uses for 6GHz band

Update: The WLAN Association has announced that the FCC has, as we predicted, voted in favor.

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has announced that it will be voting on a plan to open up the 6GHz band for general use by device makers.

The FCC positions this as a fivefold increase in the spectrum available for Wi-Fi use, but in reality, it will be used for very short-range communications, with two specific uses likely by Apple…

Analysts suggests only US iPhone 12 will have faster 5G; launch ‘Oct to Dec’

Faster 5G might be limited to US iPhones this year

There’s been disagreement among analysts about whether the iPhone 12 will support the faster 5G standard known as mmWave. It is this standard that theoretically offers gigabit speeds – as fast as the fastest fiber-optic home broadband services.

One report said no, another said yes, while a new report backs a third possibility: only on US iPhones …

Qualcomm testing new X60 5G modem with speeds over 7 Gbps, possible iPhone 12 candidate

Qualcomm 5G iPhone 12

Originally slated to share the news at MWC which was canceled due to coronavirus, Qualcomm held its “What’s Next in 5G” event today in its hometown of San Diego. At the event, the company highlighted its new 3rd-gen 5G X60 modem with the capacity for super-fast download and upload speeds. Qualcomm announced it is testing the X60 with partners this quarter, could the iPhone 12 lineup that will arrive this fall feature the new chips?

New AAPL high predicted for this year, two analysts predict $375-400

New AAPL high predicted

Two analysts are predicting a new AAPL high this year, suggesting that the stock could climb to $375 and $400 respectively by the year’s end.

While there’s a strong consensus that Apple including 5G support in this year’s iPhones will see a significant surge in sales, analysts D.A. Davidson say that the impact will last well beyond this year…

Kuo: This year’s iPhones will support faster mmWave 5G despite earlier report

This year's iPhones will support mmWave 5G

Reliable Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has said that this year’s iPhones will support ‘true’ 5G, aka mmWave 5G, despite an earlier analyst report.

A report last week from analysts at Susquehanna claimed that this year’s iPhones would only support sub-6GHz 5G. This does typically offer somewhat faster speeds than LTE, and significantly lower latency, but doesn’t match the far higher speeds offered by mmWave 5G…

iPhone capacitor supplier looks forward to strong 2020 with upcoming 5G demand

5G iPhone in 2020 will benefit from two tech developments

One of Apple’s suppliers is expecting a lucrative year of business in 2020 thanks to the wave of 5G smartphones set to head to production, including the iPhone 12. China will lead the way with orders for components needed for 5G devices early in 2020 with Apple expected to place orders for components in the middle of the year.

AT&T 5G swaps pretence for the real thing, launching in 10 cities today

AT&T 5G

iPhone and iPad users were rather surprised to see an AT&T 5G E symbol appear back in February. Surprised partly because AT&T didn’t have a 5G network at the time, and partly because no current iPhone or iPad could connect to one anyway.

What AT&T launched then was a fake 5G which was really just a form of LTE that had existed since 2014. It’s continued to use the misleading symbol despite a lawsuit and full page ad designed to draw attention to the fakery, but has now finally launched the real thing …

Apple reportedly forecasting >100 million iPhone 12 sales in 2020, thanks to 5G demand

Apple is reportedly telling its supply chain partners to expect in excess of 100 million orders for the iPhone 12 next year, as reported by Digitimes.

For 2019, the iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Pro is expected to sell around 80 million units. A jump to 100 million or more would represent a significant increase in sales demand. This level of customer interest is apparently fueled by the 5G ‘super cycle’ although the iPhone 12 is also expected to feature significant hardware upgrades compared to the last couple of years.

Report: Apple ‘pushing it’ with goal to launch iPhones featuring in-house custom 5G modems in 2022

iPhone 11 a bright spot in ongoing Japan Display saga

It is pretty common knowledge at this point that Apple is going to release 5G iPhones next year, perhaps across all three of Apple’s flagship new models. However, the 2020 iPhones will be using Qualcomm modems.

Apple’s in-house silicon team has had the challenge of cellular modems on its radar for a while. A report from Fast Company today corroborates Apple’s ambition to release its own 5G modem chips in less than three years’ time. The report says the timeline is aggressive, even with Apple’s $1bn acquisition of Intel’s modem business under its belt.
