As part of Apple’s “Back to the Mac” event in late 2010, Apple introduced OS X Lion which included lots of features and user interface decisions inspired by the iPhone and iPad.
While much of the signature Lion design like linen and leather was replaced years later in OS X Mavericks, the Mac’s concept of borrowing the iOS app launcher with a feature called Launchpad remains.
Launchpad doesn’t get much love from Mac power users (there are plenty of other efficient ways to launch Mac apps) and Apple really hasn’t touched the feature in years. But it’s a feature I use regularly on my Mac — after making a few adjustments.
Dark Mode in macOS Mojave is really awesome, but it shines in some apps better than others. Dark Mode is excellent in iTunes and Photos where colors pop off the screen, but it can make reading more difficult in text-focused apps.

Apple’s Magic Keyboard, Trackpad, and Mouse are great additions to anyone’s Mac desk setup. While many will argue that Siri on macOS needs a lot of work, it is still useful in some situations. In certain scenarios, you’ll want to use a keyboard shortcut to invoke Siri, especially since macOS is not capable of doing hands-free “Hey Siri” just yet.

Although I wouldn’t recommend running a macOS beta on a primary work machine, I am testing it on my MacBook Pro, and it’s been a positive experience thus far. Now that the public beta release of macOS Mojave is out, it’s a good time to consider five of my favorite features like I did previously with iOS 12 and watchOS 5. With macOS Mojave, Apple introduced four apps that were previously only available on iOS: Stocks, News, Home and Voice Memos. During the presentation, speculation began on how these could be the iOS apps themselves, ported to the Mac with the rumored Marzipan project. At the end of the Keynote, Craig Federighi presented a sneak peek at a multi-phase project they’ve been working on. Without giving it any name, Craig explained that this project allows iOS apps to be ported to the Mac with minimal effort,that Apple used this for their News, Stocks and Voice Memos apps and that it would become available to third-party developers next year. I decided to explore this project and see just how minimal an effort it would be to port an existing, real-world iOS app to the Mac.
