Spotify is a music streaming service that debuted in late 2008. It’s the most popular music streaming service in the world with over 200 million users (as of January 2019).

The free version allows users to stream songs for free with ads (mobile version only allows for shuffling). Paid users can have full access to the entire library for listening. Pricing is $9.99 per month for individual users and $14.99 per month for families (up to six people). There are additional plans for students that include bundled with Hulu. Apps are available for iPhone, iPad, macOS, and the web.

In early 2019, it purchased Gimlet Media and Anchor as a transition to becoming an “audio company” vs a music-only company.

We ran our annual Holiday conversion promotion during Q4, which outperformed our expectations for new subscriber additions. Over the course of 6 weeks, almost 7 million subscribers were added through this campaign, including a single day record of almost 500,000.

The streaming music service also had some surprising news about the importance of podcasts to the company …

‘We are, really, the merger of art and technology’ says Beats 1 host Zane Lowe

Beats 1 radio host and DJ Zane Lowe recently spoke with The Globe and Mail in a recently released report on the state of Apple Music as compared to its main competitors. The article details how generally, Apple quickly and confidentially dominates any given market it enters. However, the same hasn’t necessarily held true for the company’s music and radio service as rapidly as Apple might have hoped.
