iOS 11

Apple unveiled iOS 11 in June of 2017 during its Worldwide Developer Conference, releasing the first developer beta the same day.

iOS 11 includes a host of new features and interface changes, including a new file system with the Files app, a new Dock for iPad, a redesigned Control Center, drag and drop, ARKit – an augmented reality platform, Apple Pay in Messages, a redesigned App Store, improved Siri, and much more.

Here’s how Apple describes its latest mobile OS:

iOS 11 sets a new standard for what is already the world’s most advanced mobile operating system. It makes iPhone better than before. It makes iPad more capable than ever. And now it opens up both to amazing possibilities for augmented reality in games and apps. With iOS 11, iPhone and iPad are the most powerful, personal, and intelligent devices they’ve ever been.

iOS 11 is currently in developer beta and public beta. The operating system will likely launch to the general public alongside the iPhone 8 this fall.

PSA: Now’s a good time to check which of your apps won’t open in iOS 11 as 32-bit support dropped

We reported back in June that Apple was dropping support for 32-bit applications altogether in iOS 11. In iOS 10, Apple displays a warning message and then allows the app to open; in iOS 11, the app won’t open at all.

But with some 187,000 32-bit apps still in the App Store – amounting to around 8% of the total – now would be a good time to check your own apps. It takes just a few seconds to do this …

Safari in iOS 11 converts Google’s AMP links back to the original URLs

Google’s Accelerated Mobile Pages (AMP) may have been sold to users on the basis of faster-loading webpages, but the company’s underlying motivation is to lock publishers into Google’s ad network. For users, it makes it harder to see which site you’re being taken to, and trickier to share links to specific pages.

Apple is now addressing the second issue in iOS 11 by having Safari convert AMP links back into the original URLs when shared …

iOS 11: How to remove Portrait Mode effect after photo was taken

When Apple launched the iPhone 7 Plus, one of the biggest features was the dual-camera system’s Portrait Mode. The mode gives images a DSLR-like background blur, albeit with some hiccups occassionally. Sometimes the effect looks unnatural or just blurs key areas of the photo.

On iOS 10, if you didn’t have the option to keep the normal photo enabled under Settings, you might’ve lost a perfectly good moment. It may not have been perfect on day one, but Apple has been making improvements to the effect over various iOS updates.

On iOS 11, photographers will now be able to disable the depth effect even after the photo has already been taken without managing the setting. Let’s take a look how.
