Apple's iPhone 7 and 7 Plus were announced on 7th September 2016

Apple revealed the iPhone 7 on 7th September 2016.

There were few surprises. As expected, the phone was an iteration on the previous iPhone 6/6s, though with tidier antenna lines and camera bump. The only significant design change was two new colors, in the form of a high-gloss Jet Black and a matte black simply known as … Black.

Also as expected, Apple removed the 3.5mm headphone socket in favor of Lightning and wireless headphones – though with an adapter in the box for existing 3.5mm headphones. The company justified the move on the basis that it had better uses for the space, notably the haptic motor for a new touch-sensitive Home key to aid waterproofing, and a better camera, especially in the iPhone 7 Plus. More notably, it announced a new W1 wireless chip for instant, painless pairing with compatible headphones, the pairing propagating across all your devices via iCloud.

The headline new feature was, as predicted, reserved for the iPhone 7 Plus. The dual-camera system provides 2x optical zoom, and uses a combination of parallax effect and machine-learning to separate the foreground from the background to simulate shallow depth of field.

iPhone 7 review roundup: the verdicts are in, and they are mixed

Most iPhone reviews are fairly predictable, because what’s not to like about a new iPhone? There will always be features people wished Apple had added that it didn’t, of course, but the new iPhone is always significantly better than the model it replaced. For the first time, that isn’t exclusively true.

The main issue, of course, is the one everyone’s been talking about for months: the loss of the headphone socket. Apple may have planned to leak that change a long way in advance; it may have made a good case for the change; and it may have done its best to make the transition as painless as possible by tackling both the pairing and battery-life barriers to wireless headphones through the new W1 chip in AirPods and Beats headphones – but it does remain a downside of the new phones, and one which reviewers discuss.

But it’s not the only complaint reviewers have about the iPhone 7, with two other issues raised by many …

Apple faces class action lawsuit over iPhone Upgrade Program disaster with iPhone 7 launch

Site default logo image

In the chaos of iPhone 7 preorder night last week, one widespread complaint was Apple’s apparent neglect of customers signed up with the company’s iPhone Upgrade Program. As Zac noted last week, one of the biggest problems with the plan is that customers must buy from Apple in-store, not from a third-party store like Best Buy or even online from Apple.

Now, Apple has been hit with a class action lawsuit because the issues surrounding the iPhone Upgrade Program. Filed in the U.S. District Court in Northern California, the lawsuit accuses Apple of prioritizing new customers over those who are part of the iPhone Upgrade Program.

PSA: You’re going to have to buy a new screen protector for your iPhone 7/Plus

Apple opted to carryover the same general design from iPhone 6/s to iPhone 7/Plus, but a few key changes break forward compatibility for the majority of previous generation accessories. Clearly, the removal of the 3.5mm headphone jack was going to require fresh case designs for iPhone 7 (and we’ve got you covered in that department). On the other hand, despite the physical dimensions going unchanged, screen protectors for iPhone 6/s will (mostly) not fit iPhone 7. That means you won’t be able to transfer your old screen protector or pick up an older model on closeout to use with your shiny new iPhone.

The results are stunning, showing off the new iPhone’s improved camera system.

Sensor on second iPhone 7 Plus camera is smaller than main one, calculations show

Apple hasn’t revealed the sizes of the camera sensors used in the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus, but a Reddit user has used EXIF data from the Sports Illustrated photos to calculate them. They seemingly reveal that the main sensor is exactly the same size as the one in the iPhone 6s, while the sensor for the 2x telephoto lens is somewhat smaller …

PSA: Boost and Virgin USA will carry iPhone 7 + accessories starting September 23

Just a quick PSA for those who like their carrier data cheap and pre-paid: Sprint subsidiaries Boost and Virgin Mobile will be offering the iPhone 7 and accessories starting on September 23rd.

Sprint has been improving its network nationwide aggressively over the past few years and for many it is good enough to use instead of the $100/month “unlimited” plans that AT&T and Verizon offer. Boost unlimited everything plans start at $50/month and drop with on-time payments. Virgin gives you 4GB for $40 with unlimited calling and texting.

KGI: Dual-lens camera to remain exclusive to high-end new iPhone models in 2017, small upgrades expected

Site default logo image

KGI Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, citing investor reaction to Apple’s new dual camera feature, is predicting that the module will remain exclusive to high-end iPhone models for next year’s anniversary release. Further, he expects high end iPhone Plus models to represent 30-40% of the total iPhone sales.

The investor note, which makes reference to a general belief that all the new iPhone models will come with a dual-camera module in 2017 as a trickle-down effect, places doubt on the possibility of the dual camera being adopted in non-Plus iPhones.

Comment: The iPhone 7 Plus camera system has an impressive shallow depth of field effect, but it comes with limits

Site default logo image

If you’re looking forward to utilizing the upcoming depth of field effect on the iPhone 7 Plus, you should be aware of its potential limitations. Although it appears to be a great tool to have in the bag, it’s not going to have your DSLR collecting dust, depending on the type of photographer you are.

Poll: Preorders for the iPhone 7 & 7 Plus started last night, did you get what you wanted?

Site default logo image

Staying up late or getting up early in the rush to get Apple’s latest devices can often be quite exciting. Unfortunately, finding out the product you wanted so much won’t ship until as far back as November…well not so much. Last night’s preorder fiasco saw orders quickly falling back into holiday shipping dates, and customers running into all sorts of issues with the iPhone Upgrade Program. Following our poll from yesterday, we wonder, did you end up getting what you wanted?

Comment: Apple’s iPhone Upgrade Program looks like the worst way to pre-order the iPhone 7

Site default logo image

iPhone 7 pre-order day is here and two things are clear. 9to5Mac readers really like black whether its matte or glossy, and Apple can’t make enough of the new colors in time for launch day.

Jet black is already backordered into November unless you woke up at 3am ET and pre-ordered immediately. Matte black isn’t as bad with 2-3 week estimates for most models currently, but the low supply has presented an annoying downside to iPhone Upgrade Program customers.

Verizon and AT&T are the latest carriers to launch free iPhone 7 promos

Verizon Wireless has joined rival carriers T-Mobile and Sprint in running a free iPhone 7 launch promo. The terms of Verizon’s deal pretty much mirror that of the other carriers.

You’ll receive $650 for a qualifying trade-in of iPhone 6/s and iPhone 6/s Plus as credit across 24-months when you purchase iPhone 7. The credit should show up on your bill within 2-3 cycles. To receive the full credit the line must be active for the full 2-years, which would come into play if you’re planning to upgrade next year.

Verizon isn’t too specific on device trade requirements, only saying that it “must be in good working & cosmetic condition.” No matter which iPhone 7/Plus you order, you’ll only receive a credit of $650 (effectively makes 32GB iPhone 7 free). Surprisingly, we haven’t seen an iPhone 7 promo from AT&T yet, despite all of its major competitors grabbing headlines with their pre-order offers.

After pre-ordering iPhone 7, your next move should be to pick up a solid case and a pair of Bluetooth headphones. I’d recommend Amazon’s iPhone 7 storefront as the best one stop shop for all accessories. Also, check out our recent roundup for even more iPhone 7/Plus case options.

iPhone 7 reader verdict: What you thought, and which model you’re planning to buy

I gave my verdict on the iPhone 7 yesterday, and asked for yours. The majority of you – some 54% – said that the new iPhone was as expected. That’s not particularly surprising given than we’d previously reported almost everything we saw, but 28% of you were still impressed, while 17% were disappointed.

Impressed or not, though, the majority of those who took part in the poll are intending to buy the new iPhone. Interestingly, and perhaps influenced by the dual-camera, more than twice as many of you are opting for the larger iPhone 7 Plus than its smaller sibling …

Steve Jobs effectively explains why Apple removed the headphone socket from the iPhone 7 [Video]

Steve Jobs

When Phil Schiller used the term ‘courage’ to describe Apple’s decision to remove the 3.5mm headphone socket from the iPhone 7, his choice of that particular word was probably not accidental.

It’s likely a reference to a comment by Steve Jobs when he was asked to explain another controversial omission of an established standard: the lack of support for Flash in the iPhone and iPad …
