Japanese Apple blog Macotakara is making some unorthodox claims this morning regarding the 2019 iPhone lineup. Previous rumors had indicated that the 2019 lineup would be direct successors to the 2018 iPhone XR, iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max.
Today’s report, citing reliable Chinese supply chain sources, suggests that in addition to spec bumps to the XR and XS, there will be two new 2019 iPhone models with 6.1-inch and 6.5-inch OLED displays. These models would be specially designed to accommodate the rumored triple-camera system.
After reducing iPhone prices in China to help boost demand, Apple’s price cuts reportedly continue in India, with discounts on iPhone XR models totalling around 25%.

After releasing a humorous new promotional video about how Apple takes privacy seriously earlier this month, the company has shared another privacy ad highlighting how Safari limits cross-site tracking.
According to Longbow Research (via Bloomberg), Apple is still facing challenges in the China market as far as iPhone sales are concerned. They track search volumes on the Chinese search engine Baidu and note that iPhone searches are almost half what they were a year ago.
Apple today is continuing its ad campaign focusing on the Portrait Mode and Depth Control features on the iPhone XR and XS. The latest ad is called “Alejandro” and focuses on using Depth Control to remove someone from the background of an image.
Apple has today rolled out a new ad titled “Bokeh’d” focused on the computational bokeh effect found on iPhone 7 Plus and later. With newer iPhone generations, users can adjust the amount of bokeh.
Just like we saw happen last month, Apple has extended the final date of its iPhone trade-in promotion. We can tell this from the small print on the Apple.com/cn homepage. Yesterday, it said that the deadline for iPhone XS/XR boosted trade-in was February 17. Now, it says the offer continues until March 25.
This likely signals yet another extension to the ‘limited time’ promotion worldwide. Still, outside of the US, customers can only benefit from the additional trade-in value at an Apple retail store.

Apple’s permeating iPhone upgrade promotion continues to gain momentum. After extending the limited time offer in Japan yesterday, Apple has now revised its U.S. trade-in deal, offering customers a new attractive monthly payment option if you make the upgrade in an Apple Store.
Another carrier in Japan has announced that it is lowering the price of the iPhone XR. Back in November, NTT Docomo announced it was cutting ~$100 off the price of the iPhone XR, and now SoftBank has announced a similar promotion.
New data from CIRP, Consumer Intelligence Research Partners, shows that iPhone XR was the best selling iPhone model in the United States over the past fiscal quarter, accounting for nearly 40% of total sales. Interestingly, the iPhone XS and XS Max combined accounted for just over 25%.

A new report from Barclays today predicts that this year’s iPhone XR will bring better cellular connectivity with a new LTE 4×4 MIMO antenna. This could bring the entry-level flagship more in line with the features and performance of the current iPhone XS and iPhone 11.

After originally rolling out support for the iPhone XS Max and XR displays back in October, Instagram broke the optimized resolutions with an update last month. Now, an update today has solved the issue, but also requires Instagram users to be running iOS 10. In related news, YouTube has released an update that now takes full advantage of the new iPad Pro displays.
As rumored earlier in the week, prominent Chinese retailers have cut the price of iPhone XR, and other models, as Apple faces demand weakness in the region.
Leading resellers JD.com and Suning have cut the sales price of iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, and XR this week by about 20%. Apple has not changed pricing on its website.
A report from China’s National Business Daily says Chinese iPhone vendors received word yesterday regarding price cuts to iPhone 8, 8 Plus, XR, XS and XS Max.
The biggest price cut comes to the iPhone XR, which allegedly is seeing a 450 yuan (~$66) discount, bringing the total XR price to 5250 yuan (about $770). Generally though, most iPhones are seeing a 400 yuan (~$59) reduction.
The iPhone XR has firmly taken over the iPhone XS in usage, according to data from Mixpanel. Although Apple seems to be struggling to meet targets on sales across the iPhone line, the relative sales of the XR now means it has overtaken the 5.8-inch iPhone XS, which had a one month sales lead.
However, the iPhone XS Max continues to hold a sizeable lead despite being the most expensive option.
New data from market research firm Counterpoint shows iPhone sales are down 20% YoY based upon November 2018 numbers versus 2017. Further, the firm shows that last November, the $999+ iPhone X was the best selling phone in November, while this year it is the iPhone XR, which starts at $749.
Following Apple’s revision to its Q1 2019 earnings last week, The Wall Street Journal is out today with a report exploring how the iPhone XR is the “phone that’s failing Apple.” While the report says it’s too early to call the iPhone XR a “flop,” it’s hard to deny the struggles the device is facing.
