Say hello to the future

Check out our top iPhone X stories:

Apple has announced its long awaited bezel-less, premium 10th anniversary smartphone, iPhone X at its September event. Priced at $999 for the 64GB model and $1,149 for 256GB, iPhone X is Apple’s most expensive iPhone yet.

The iPhone X has a brand-new design and is the first iPhone to feature an OLED display. The iPhone X has a 5.8-inch screen with minimal bezels, giving it a physical size close to the iPhone 8, with a screen size larger than the iPhone 8 Plus.

The iPhone X features glass on the front and back with a stainless steel body that seamlessly meet at the device’s curved edges. Other flagship features include the devices new 3D sensors that bring Face ID as a replacement to Touch ID and wireless charging support.

The iPhone X along with the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus feature the A11 Bionic processor. The all new chip has four efficiency cores that are up to 70% faster than A10 Fusion and two performance cores that are up to 25% faster. The new models also have an Apple designed GPU that offers up to 30% better performance than the A10 chip.

iPhone X will be available for preorder on October 27 and will launch on November 3.

The good news and (mostly) bad news on the iPhone X notch [Poll]

The notch on the iPhone X has been the subject of a great deal of debate even before the keynote. I intended to round-up a bunch of views on it, positive and negative, but actually struggled to find any positive ones.

They should’ve made the bezels thick enough around the display to accommodate ‘the notch’. Symmetry is so so important in design. How Apple missed this is a mystery to me.

Its the first time they didn’t think about symmetry. That notch can’t be unseen.

Such a shame to ruin what could have been an edge to edge spacious and beautiful display. One look at the gorgeous display of the LG V30 is proof positive of what’s possible when you employ skilled designers. Apple blew it.

The notch in the screen looks terrible, very un-apple like. It’s hard to believe they released something that looks like this instead of making the screen straight across under the sensors.

I can’t get past the “devil horns” on the model X. How could they make such an obvious design mistake?

When it comes to how the notch will work in practice, there is good news and bad …

Did Apple’s demo of Face ID convince you that it’s a worthy Touch ID replacement? [Poll]

One of the most pressing questions about the iPhone X in the lead up to its announcement was whether Face ID would be a worthy replacement for Touch ID. The switch to an all-screen design means that Apple has dropped the Home button – and right along with it, Touch ID.

Apple yesterday demoed Face ID for the first time and we’re curious, were you impressed by the demo? Do you see Face ID as worthy replacement for Touch ID?

Opinion: 5.8-inch display in a smaller footprint makes iPhone X an obvious choice

When comparing Apple’s new iPhones side-by-side, the biggest difference that calls out to me is that beautiful iPhone X display. The bezel-less device fully immerses you in content, and compared to the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus’ bezels, it seems otherworldly.

I don’t know why I’d go for any other iPhone. By shrinking those bezels down, the iPhone X gains a significant display size increase, while remaining smaller than the iPhone 8 Plus. Outside of price, I can’t find a reason why I wouldn’t go for the iPhone X.

iPhone X Diary: First impressions from the keynote don’t wow me, but do impress

Yesterday’s keynote was not without its challenges for Apple. First, thanks to our digging into the leaked code, there were few surprises.

Second, there was the fact that Apple had to kick-off with the understudy. The iPhone 8 – for all the features it borrowed from the iPhone X – looked very much like the iPhone 7, which itself looked very much like the iPhone 6. It was hard to make an iPhone 6sss seem too exciting – especially when everyone was waiting for the main act.

And then there was the failed Face ID demo. The flagship iPhone X feature falling over the first time it was demonstrated. Update: This was because other people were handling it prior to the demo, and the phone was trying to match their face and treating it as a login attempt. After several failed attempts, it fell back to requiring the passcode, as it’s designed to to.

But for my part, the keynote didn’t have much of a job to do …

iPhone 8 and iPhone X fast charge battery to 50% in 30 minutes, if you buy USB-C power adapter

Apple pushed wireless charging as a flagship feature in the reveal of its latest iPhone 8 and iPhone X phones at the event yesterday, but there are also battery improvements for customers who don’t mind using a cable.

iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus and iPhone X support fast charging. You can go from 0 to 50% charge in 30 minutes … but you need an Apple USB-C charger and Lightning cable (sold separately).

Investors and analysts unfazed by late availability of iPhone X, remain bullish

While it had been clear before the launch that Apple was struggling with iPhone X production, with everyone talking about extremely constrained supply, and some reports of a delayed launch, most were still surprised that the device wouldn’t begin shipping until November 3.

But investors seem unmoved by the news, AAPL’s stock price scarcely moving in pre-market trading, and analysts seem likewise unconcerned …

Here’s how much the iPhone X will cost you with carrier financing

Apple today officially took the wraps off of its all-new iPhone X, and as we expected, it’s the company’s most expensive iPhone to date. At full price, the iPhone X costs $999 for 64GB and $1149 for 256GB.

Many carriers, however, have moved away from subsidized and outright pricing models, focusing instead installment programs. Needless to say, these programs make the price of the iPhone X slightly less intimidating…
