Just a few days following the debut of Chrome 56 on the desktop, Google has started pushing the same new version to iOS users. While not a major update, this new version does bring along a couple of useful features, including a handy QR code scanner.

Since its launch, Google’s Chromium project has been a desktop-only matter, but that changed in 2015 with the addition of the Android version. Following that, only the iOS version of the browser wasn’t open-source. However, that’s changing today as Google has announced that the code for Chrome on iOS has been moved into the Chromium open-source repository.

With only four brushes and a maximum of five layers, the app focuses on essentials. It’s a replacement for the digital sketchbook you might carry around in your bag to explore ideas or casually draft compositions.

Google Translates’s augmented reality feature, Word Lens, now works with Japanese. As with other supported languages, you simply point your iPhone camera at a Japanese sign, notice, menu or similar and it will instantly overlay the English text – even without a data connection.
After testing the ability for brands to communicate directly with users, Facebook today announced its next step in monetizing its Messenger platform. In a post on the Messenger blog, Facebook product manager Eddie Zhang announced that the company is launching a “very small test” of ads in Messenger, beginning in Australia and Thailand.

Google today has announced an update to its Maps app on iOS that brings a few notable changes. The update improves ride sharing integration with Uber, while it also refreshes the ride sharing interface as a whole. The update is also coming to Android.
Filmic Pro has long been my go-to app for shooting anything but the most frivolous content on my iPhone. It’s an app that affords a level of control over the filming process that’s unlike anything we’ve seen from an iOS app. If you’re serious about filmmaking with your iPhone, then it’s a no-brainer to have Filmic Pro as part of your repertoire. To illustrate the sheer amount of features contained within the app, we created a video that covered its basic concepts, and it was over 13 minutes long.
Filmic has recently been working hard on the next big version of its app. The forthcoming update will introduce a new log mode that allows filmmakers to shoot videos with a flat picture profile containing additional stops of dynamic range. This is the type of feature that’s normally reserved for more expensive standalone cameras, but it will soon be available to iPhone users.

Instagram today quietly announced that it is rolling out an update to its iOS app that improves support for the sharper iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus cameras and adds Live Photo support. Instagram’s co-founder Mike Krieger made the announcement on Twitter earlier this afternoon (via TechCrunch).

Back in October, Twitter announced that it was shutting down the popular 6-second video sharing service Vine. Twitter has announced today that it is bringing support for live 360-degree video to the broadcasting service Periscope. Spotify has updated its Mac client app today featuring integration with the new MacBook Pro Touch Bar for the first time, with a similar experience to the iTunes Touch Bar interface. Spotify continues to lead in the streaming music space with 40 million paid subscribers, Apple Music currently touts 20 million customers on the $9.99/month subscription plan.
The Spotify app now shows transport, shuffle and search controls in the Touch Bar whilst the app is frontmost as well as integration with Now Playing for persistent access to playback options whilst music is playing in the background.
