Apple retail store signage goes (RED) for World AIDS Day on Dec. 1

Red-Apple-logo-retail-store

Like it did last year, Apple’s participation in this year’s Worlds AIDS Day will include changing the iconic glowing white Apple logo that hangs outside its retail stores to red in order to raise awareness for the fight against AIDS. The new red Apple signage is already up at Apple’s Australian stores (pictured above) as we roll into Dec. 1 local time.

Google Chrome crashes hard with Mac OS 10.10.2 beta, here’s the fix

…Use Safari! (lol,)

Google Chrome 39 had started to crash for me as soon as I updated to 10.10.2 Beta. I tried all of the normal things (trashing Google prefs, using Canary, etc etc). Nothing worked except downgrading back to Mac OS 10.10.1 stable.

[tweet https://twitter.com/llsethj/status/538403705201377281]

It turns out that the new 10.10.2 has depreciated some Trackpad APIs that cause an immediate crash.

The answer comes via Reddit today:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hMVte93tgTM

Obviously use at your own risk: an Automator app has also been built to speed up the below process.

Workaround that was found on the Apple dev forums – this is not my code – use at your own risk – I’ve used it and it works fine.

1) Open up text edit and paste this code – save it as “patch.m”

#import <AppKit/AppKit.h>

__attribute((constructor)) void Patch_10_10_2_entry()
{
NSLog(@"10.10.2 patch loaded");
}

@interface NSTouch ()
- (id)_initWithPreviousTouch:(NSTouch *)touch newPhase:(NSTouchPhase)phase position:(CGPoint)position     isResting:(BOOL)isResting force:(double)force;
@end

@implementation NSTouch (Patch_10_10_2)
- (id)_initWithPreviousTouch:(NSTouch *)touch newPhase:(NSTouchPhase)phase position:(CGPoint)position     isResting:(BOOL)isResting
{
return [self _initWithPreviousTouch:touch newPhase:phase position:position isResting:isResting force:0];
}
@end

2) Run this command in Terminal

clang -dynamiclib -framework AppKit ~/Desktop/patch.m -o ~/Desktop/patch.dylib

3) Run this command in Terminal to open Chrome.

env DYLD_INSERT_LIBRARIES=~/Desktop/patch.dylib "/Applications/Google Chrome.app/Contents/MacOS/Google Chrome"

Notes: This will leave Terminal open in the background, do not close it or Chrome will quit out. This doesn’t modify anything permanently just fixes it temporarily. To reopen chrome a second time all you have to do is repeat step 3.

Review: Deliveries for Mac and iOS is the perfect way to track your online orders for the holidays

Site default logo image

Screenshot 2014-11-26 21.16.48

With Cyber Monday coming up, a lot of us shop online, as opposed to going out to the store. It would be nice if there was an easy way to track all of your packages. Of course you could set up mail rules to filter any emails that contain the words, “the tracking number,” but all that does is put all of your emails into a folder without notifying you of any changes in the status of your package. After initially receiving the email most forget about it and never track their packages, which happens all the time to me causing me to not pick up my packages for weeks. Or you can be the type of person that can obsessively track your package by constantly pressing the refresh button hoping that there’s an update to no avail. Well there’s an app that can track your tracking numbers and keep you updated about the status of your order. Deliveries is powerful, handy and easily notifies you of your packages.

FingerKey app lets you unlock your Mac using iPhone’s TouchID fingerprint sensor

A new app called FingerKey allows Mac users to unlock their computer using Apple’s Touch ID fingerprint sensor on the iPhone 5s, 6, or 6 Plus.

That means you’ll be able to login to your Mac using your iPhone’s fingerprint sensor rather than typing in a password each time. The app takes advantage of Apple opening up the Touch ID sensor to third-party apps for logins after previously being reserved for unlocking the device itself and authenticating App Store and iTunes purchases.

The FingerKey app includes the ability to unlock multiple computers from a distance, 256-bit AES encryption, and a Notification Center Today widget for quick access.

The developer says that support for logging into Windows and Linux computers is coming soon as is a Pattern Unlock feature for logging in via touchscreen gestures.

We recently wrote about a similar app, which also used a Bluetooth connection, that allowed users to unlock their Mac using by knocking on their iPhone’s screen.

FingerKey is available on the App Store for $1.99 and the developer shared the video below of the app in action:

Apple CarPlay vs Google Android Auto — full comparison (Video)

autovs

Apple and Google are back at it again and attempting to bring a safe and friendly mobile experience to your car. Android Auto and CarPlay are the two company’s re-imagining of mobile user interfaces for the car and both are gearing up for a major rollout over the next year.

Each system is designed to work with its respective native mobile platform, but there are differences between the two that may appeal to different people. Today we’re comparing Apple’s CarPlay to Google’s Android Auto using the 2015 Hyundai Sonata. This car comes packed with both systems, so you won’t have to compromise either way, but there are some important differences between the two…

Best iPhone 6/Plus wallet cases: Pad and Quill Little Pocket Book and SurfacePad from TwelveSouth

Site default logo image

iphone-6-wallet case

For all of its greatness, Apple Pay hasn’t nearly killed the need to take your wallet with you wherever you go. But if you are like me, it has lightened your load a little bit. Instead of carrying around 5 credit cards, I now carry around one each of debit and credit. Combine that with some other de-Costanzifications (scan insurance cards and health club cards for instance) I’ve made recently, I can now consolidate my wallet into a few card slots.

What I’m getting at here is that I can follow the lead of my wife and now consolidate my iPhone and my wallet finally. I’ve chosen two amazing iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus cases from my favorite iPhone case manufacturers to get me there: Pad and Quill’s Little Pocket Book ($60 -$10 off for Black Friday) and Twelve South’s $50 Surfacepad

Nintendo patent hints at official Game Boy emulator for mobile phones

Site default logo image

Gameboy-emulator-01

TechCrunch points to a newly published patent filed by Nintendo that shows the company is interested in bringing Game Boy titles to mobile devices through emulation technology. Many emulators exist online to mimic old consoles and allow gamers to play back catalogs of games converted to ROM files on Macs and PCs, and Nintendo could possibly do the same to officially bring titles to mobile devices without much heavy lifting in terms of rewriting the games:

Critically acclaimed console game ‘Oddworld Stranger’s Wrath’ arrives remastered for iOS devices

[youtube=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jd2CxwPP6ks]

Oddworld Stranger’s Wrath first debuted on the original Xbox in 2005 to praise from critics and today the game has officially arrived for iOS devices with some new additions and enhancements specifically for the smaller screens.

Developed by Oddworld Inhabitants, Stranger’s Wrath is the latest installment in the franchise despite being first released on the original Xbox almost 10 years ago. The title foregoes the side scrolling puzzler gameplay that made the original Oddworld: Abe’s Oddysee and follow up games in the series popular when released on PlayStation in the late 90’s. Instead, Stranger’s Wrath is half first-person shooter, half third-person platformer with lots of the usual Oddworld exploration and theatrical soundtrack.

The developers say the new iOS release includes “exciting new controls that make the most of the mobile format and improved visuals throughout.” The game also includes support for Made-for-iPhone game controllers and supports English, German, Russian, French, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Finish, Swedish, and Polish languages.

Oddworld: Stranger’s Wrath is available on the App Store now for $5.99.

IBM analytics show that iOS dominates online purchasing in both transactions and average sale values

ios-ecommerce

Android might have the sheer weight of numbers, but when it comes to ecommerce, it’s iPhone and iPad owners retailers want to attract. Online shopping data compiled from Thanksgiving shopping yesterday showed that despite iOS devices in the US being outnumbered almost two-to-one by Android, it’s iOS devices that dominate online purchasing.

iOS accounted for a quarter of online purchases, compared to less than 7% for Android devices. Average order value was also higher, at $118.57 compared to Android’s $95.25 …

MIT looks back at Steve Jobs patents, including the 141 approved since his death

Site default logo image

SteveJobsCloseUp

Steve Jobs may have passed away more than three years ago, but he is still having patents awarded today as applications work their way through the system and old patents are renewed with updates. MIT Technology Review notes that of the 458 patents credited to Jobs, almost a third of them have been awarded since his death in October 2011.

Since his death in 2011 from pancreatic cancer, the former Apple CEO has won 141 patents. That’s more than most inventors win during their lifetimes.

His patent documents act as a record of Apple’s history, says the site …

Looks like no Black Friday deals in European Apple Stores – just (RED) donations on Cyber Monday

Site default logo image

While Apple Store customers in the U.S. can look forward to gift cards on selected purchases on Black Friday, it seems European customers may be missing out. Apple last year offered its European customers discounted pricing rather than gift cards, but rumors – including from the usually reliable MacG – say that there will be neither cards nor discounts this year …

Back of iDevices set to lose ugly FCC markings as E-Label Act signed by President Obama

iphone-6-apple-pic

Apple’s master of minimalism Jony Ive probably hates the fact that the company is legally required to mark the back of iPhones and iPads with a bunch of regulatory stampings, but as of today the largest of them – the FCC approval symbols – will no longer be required.

The E-Label Act first proposed in July has today been signed into law by President Obama. Manufacturers will still be required to display FCC symbols, but can now do so in software rather than cluttering up the rear of the casing.

Apple will probably leave the markings in place on current devices, removing them as of the next generation. Settings > General > About seems the most likely place for them to appear on future iPhones and iPads.

Sadly European iDevices – which don’t need FCC markings – are still saddled with the equally-ugly CE markings for now.

Lucasfim is such a tease. After initially saying that the trailer for Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens would be shown only in 30 movie theatres, the Disney-owned studio has now tweeted that it will also be shown on the iTunes trailers site tomorrow.

You’ll get your chance to see how the stars of the original 1977 film are holding up when they are reunited in the latest in the film series.

Holiday gift guide: Smart home products – get a jump on HomeKit for 2015

holiday gift guide smart home products 2014

I wondered earlier this year whether Apple’s HomeKit system would bring home automation to the masses. The good news is that you don’t need to wait for HomeKit to start bringing smart home technology to your family and friends – and we’ve put together a gift guide covering some of the main products that might bring a smile to their faces during the holidays.

With the right gadgets, they will be able to control lighting, heating, cooking, sound systems … even have their kettle switch on when they walk up to their front door, which will automatically unlock as they approach. Best of all, you can get them in on the smart home action from just $30 …
