Now that you’ve got new Apple gear, get cash for your old stuff quickly and easily

Merry Christmas!

If you’ve been a good little boy or girl, Santa hopefully hooked you up with new iPads, iPhones and Macs.  That likely means that what you were using yesterday will be retired to a drawer. Don’t do that. There’s significant value left in that gear and we can help you get as much cash as possible for it.

At Trade-in.9to5mac.com, you can get top dollar for iPhones, iPads, iPods, Macs…even Apple Watches if that’s what you are after. Compared to cash back sites like Amazon, Gazelle and others, we’re consistently at or near the top in refund amount.  Cash comes via check in as little as 1 week.

Let’s face it, most old devices get put in a desk drawer and lose value every day they sit there. Give yourself a secondary Christmas gift by trading in that gear you just replaced now, while the iron is hot.

(And if you’ve got some broken stuff, head over to 9to5mac.ifixyouri.com to get your devices repaired.) Disclaimer

Review: Hori’s HoriPad Ultimate for Apple TV + iOS doubles Nimbus’s battery life, improves ergonomics

Between confusing implementations and unappealing prices, the first wave of iOS game controllers had a very rough launch, nearly killing a new accessory category that had the potential to be huge for Apple. Some of the earliest iOS game controllers only fit smaller iPhones and iPod touches, others had limited buttons, and most were originally priced at $70 or more. With the exception of Mad Catz’ more affordable, device-agnostic C.T.R.L.i series of Bluetooth controllers, iOS gamepads quickly racked up mediocre reviews and wound up in discount bins. The message to Apple and controller makers: follow Mad Catz’ template, and price the controllers more reasonably, or no one’s going to buy them.

Currently an Apple Store exclusive, Hori’s new HoriPad Ultimate ($50) is the latest acknowledgement that the lesson’s been learned: it’s the second Made For Apple TV game controller, including full MFi/iOS 7+ compatibility for use with iPads, iPhones, and iPod touches, plus Mac support. The pricing, design, and basic feature set are substantially similar to SteelSeries’ Nimbus, though Hori — a respected Japanese developer of game controllers — has outdone SteelSeries on the specifics. For the same price as Nimbus, you get a more PlayStation 4-like controller design with superior hand grips, twice the battery life, better-feeling buttons and a more substantial weight. HoriPad Ultimate uses a Lightning cable to recharge its battery, too…

Lawsuit against Apple for undelivered texts to Android phones now completely dismissed

Back in August, U.S. District Judge Lucy H. Koh threw out a class action lawsuit against Apple from former iPhone users complaining that text messages were no longer delivered when they ported their number to an Android phone. The lawsuit alleged that Apple was guilty of “interference” with their messages.

That wasn’t quite the end of it, however. Three of the plaintiffs persisted in individual claims against Apple, alleging that the company was in breach of the Federal Wire Tap Act by ‘intercepting’ their messages. The court has now dismissed these claims – with, it turns out, very good reason …

Chief White House Photographer shares behind the scenes images he took w/ his iPhone

Apple has heavily touted the camera capabilities of the iPhone 6/iPhone 6s and iPhone 6 Plus/iPhone 6s Plus since the first introduction of the devices in 2014. The company ran a worldwide ad campaign called “Shot on iPhone” that showcased some of the beautiful photographs taken with iPhones. Now, the Chief Official White House Photographer has shared a collection of images that he took throughout 2015 with his iPhone.

China Mobile roadmap reportedly claims 4-inch ‘Apple iPhone 7c’ coming in April 2016

According to Chinese website ‘MyDrivers’, China Mobile laid out its product roadmap for 2016 and included mentions of a new Apple product. As shown from the photo above, in April 2016 China Mobile is expecting to launch the ‘iPhone 7c’. This seems to be the 4 inch iPhone device that has been rumored for several months, although the rumor mill moniker has generally settled on it being called the iPhone 6c. MICGadget reported that Apple’s new phone would be called the iPhone 7c, matching this report, earlier in the month however.

Apple adds iPhones to Lightning to USB Camera Adapter compatibility list, photo import works under iOS 9.2

Two weeks after quietly updating the Lightning to SD Card Camera Reader to USB 3.0 and adding iPhone support to the formerly iPad-only accessory, Apple is signaling that similar changes may be coming to its cousin, the Lightning to USB Camera Adapter. Notably, Apple has updated the USB Camera Adapter’s official page to add support for the iPhone 5, 5c, 5s, 6, 6 Plus, 6s, and 6s Plus, mirroring a change to the SD Card Camera Reader that was discovered alongside iOS 9.2. Though iPhone compatibility was added in iOS 9.2, Apple previously left the USB Camera Adapter’s page unchanged.

Smart Home Combo Review: HomeKit Elgato Eve temperature / air quality sensor and Avea Flare mood light

The Elgato Avea Flare is an egg-shaped mood light with an iPhone and Watch app available to control the scene and colors displayed. It sits in the corner of a room or garden and discreetly glows. I tested the standalone unit, but you can also buy the Avea Bulb which is the same concept in a different form. The Elgato Eve Room ($78) is an indoor climate detector — it measures air quality, humidity and temperature. This data can then be reviewed through an iPhone app to act upon or using your voice with Siri questions. The Eve sensor (pictures below) is meant to be tucked away and out of sight, on a shelf or wall, silently checking up on your interior air quality.

These two products are from the same manufacturer, but they sit at opposite ends of the spectrum in terms of smart home gear; one has a clear functional purpose and the other is a ‘smart’ whimsical decoration. Both integrate with iOS via an iPhone app and both make cool additions to your life. I’ve been using both for a few weeks; read on for my full review of these smart home devices from Elgato …

iPhone 6s captures stunning Robot Koch music video with underwater scenes

We’ve seen quite a few professional movies and videos shot on iPhones over the years, and the latest example is the music video for Robot Koch’s Dark Waves. Shot and directed by Sven Dreesbach, it borrows heavily from his concept short Willow Creek.

As with most such footage, I’m sure it was shot with a $650 iPhone hooked up to about $50k’s worth of cinematic mounts, lenses and – in this case – underwater casings, but it is still a vote of confidence in the quality of the camera and sensor.

Update: While Schiller states ‘6s,’ it was the 6s Plus specifically that was used.

CBS’s Charlie Rose got a detailed look at the iPhone’s camera tech with Apple’s senior director of camera hardware Graham Townsend.

Apple has long promoted the quality of its cameras, with a major ‘Shot on iPhone 6‘ ad campaign prior to the launch of the iPhone 6s. I compared the iPhone 6 and 6s cameras as part of my iPhone 6s diary.

Apple reduces prices of iPhone 6s/Plus in India by around 15% in wake of flagging sales

Site default logo image

Following Apple’s decision to almost halve the price of the iPhone 5s in India, the Times of India states that the company has followed this by a more modest price-cut for the iPhone 6s/Plus. The move was reportedly made in response to a sales slump.

Apple cut prices of its latest iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus […] just two months after their launch in India to boost flagging sales in what is historically its most crucial quarter as demand for the flagship devices nosedived from a Diwali high […]

The average difference in prices of all iPhone 6s and 6s Plus devices between launch time and now is about 15 per cent …

Apple reportedly agrees to pay Ericsson 0.5% of iPhone & iPad revenues in patent settlement

A long-running patent dispute between Apple and mobile comms pioneer Ericsson dating has been settled, said the Swedish company, announcing that a license deal for its 2G, 3G and 4G/LTE patents had been reached. The amount Apple agreed to pay for use of the patented technology has not been disclosed, but Reuters cited an estimate in an investment note from a Nordic bank.

Investment bank ABG Sundal Collier said in a note to clients it believed the deal meant Apple would be charged around 0.5 percent of its revenue on iPads and iPhones by Ericsson.

The two companies have been in dispute since 2012. Apple took Ericsson to court back in January, claiming that the company was asking too much money for a license, and Ericsson countersued shortly afterwards.

The Swedish company upped the stakes in February, asking the ITC to block iPhones from the USA. The ITC agreed to investigate, but did not impose an import ban. Ericsson’s next move was to sue Apple in Europe, but it appears that the two companies have now settled their differences.

Best Buy just dropped $100 off the new Apple Beats Lightning Pill+ ($117-138/ea)

From 9to5Toys.com:

Update: Looks like Best Buy and Amazon both killed the deal. Hope you guys got in early!

Amazon and Best Buy offer the Beats Pill+ in Black (Best Buy also offers White) for $137.99 with free shipping. That’s the lowest price we’ve seen on Apple’s new Bluetooth speaker by quite a bit (it was discounted $30 to $200 on Black Friday). It comes with soft carrying case, 1.5m Lightning to USB-A charging cable and 12.5W PSU. Read our full review for an in-depth look at this stylish speaker.

Better yet, grab 2 and the price for each drops to just $117/ea at Best Buy which is pretty much BoGo. Note Amazon might take a 1-2 days for processing but both promise to deliver in time for Christmas.

In addition to tonight’s Beats deal, Best Buy is also discounting several other Apple products down to all-time low prices. Highlights include $300 off the all-new 12-inch MacBook$100 off Apple Watch$125 off iPad Air 2, and iPhone 6s for just $1 on-contract.

Apple’s iPhone continues to top Flickr’s most popular camera list in 2015

Flickr today released their list of most popular cameras and brands used for photos shared on their site this year, and it’s no surprise that Apple’s iPhone continues to top the list. The iPhone 6 alone tops the list of most popular camera on Flickr in 2015, accounting for 5% of all photographers on the photo sharing site this year. Various models of the iPhone from 2015 and earlier still in use take 8 out of the 20 slots on the top camera list this year. In total, Apple-branded cameras made up 18.52% of ones used on the service this year.

Target’s mobile wallet service is described as being in the early stages of development with a possible launch possibly planned for sometime next year. Like other retailer-specific mobile wallets, Target’s mobile wallet would let customers pay for goods through a smartphone app.

Apple facing second (unrelated) lawsuit over excess data usage, this one for iPhone 5/5s

Apple is already facing one class action lawsuit alleging that customers were unknowingly using up substantial amounts of mobile data, and it now faces a second.

The issue at stake in this new suit is that the iPhone 5/5s could silently switch from Wi-Fi to LTE under some circumstances, resulting in mobile data usage even when the phone was on Wi-Fi. This was fixed for Verizon users back in September 2012, but law firm Hagens Berman Sobol Shapiro LLP claims that Apple didn’t fix it for AT&T users until more than two years later.

According to the complaint, filed in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California in San Jose, Apple knew about the defect “almost immediately,” yet failed to fix it for AT&T wireless subscribers for years, and did not even disclose the defect. The defect affected all versions of iOS 6 and 7 and was only resolved with the release of iOS 8.1 in October 2014.

Apple promotes Jeff Williams to Chief Operating Officer, Phil Schiller will oversee all App Stores

Update: Mark Gurman breaks down what it all means here

Apple today announced a few leadership changes including a new COO and changes to App Store leadership. Jeff Williams, previously Senior Vice President Operations, is officially being promoted to Chief Operating Officer which is CEO Tim Cook’s old title. Williams, notably, has been heavily involved in the Apple Watch team as well as the open source ResearchKit initiative.

Phil Schiller, Apple’s Worldwide Marketing SVP, will add to his responsibilities the task of overseeing all the App Store leadership. The App Store change notably follows discontent from developers that the iPhone App Store has seen more focus than the Mac App Store, which key developers have left in recent months. The move officially acknowledges Schiller’s role as the face of the App Store going forward.

Blackberry CEO attacks Apple’s stance on privacy, says ‘putting reputation above the greater good’

Blackberry CEO John Chen has written a blog post criticizing Apple’s strong stance on the privacy of customer data, suggesting that BlackBerry’s own privacy commitment “does not extend to criminals.” Although he does not name Apple directly, Chen links to an arsTechnica piece in which a NY federal judge expressed displeasure at Apple’s position in a case involving an iPhone belonging to a suspected drug dealer.

For years, government officials have pleaded to the technology industry for help yet have been met with disdain. In fact, one of the world’s most powerful tech companies recently refused a lawful access request in an investigation of a known drug dealer because doing so would “substantially tarnish the brand” of the company. We are indeed in a dark place when companies put their reputations above the greater good.

Apple uses end-to-end encryption for both iMessages and FaceTime, making it impossible for the company to decrypt these communications, and also introduced strong encryption of iOS devices in iOS 8, again leaving the company unable to access locked devices.

Opposition to Apple’s approach has included the United States Attorney General, the FBI, the DOJ and other law-enforcement agencies – with the Homeland Security Committee and CIA joining in following the Paris attacks.

Chen seems unaware of both the irony of his stance – as head of a company built on secure communications – and the potential damage to the company’s reputation by implicitly suggesting that its own devices can have their privacy compromised. As I argued in a recent opinion piece, if you build in a hole designed to be used by law enforcement agencies, it’s only a matter of time before criminals gain access.

Music industry analyst estimates Apple Music will hit 8M paid subscribers this year, 20M next year

A well-known music industry analyst is estimating that Apple Music will hit 8M paid subscribers by the end of the year, and will reach 20M by the end of 2016, reports Music Business Worldwide. The prediction was made by Mark Mulligan, co-founder of digital content specialists Midia Consulting, who previously held senior research positions with Forrester and Jupiter.

In raw numbers terms, that would put it just behind market leader Spotify by the end of next year, but that may not quite present the true picture …
