iPhone 11 release date

At its fall 2019 event, Apple announced that the iPhone 11, 11 Pro, and 11 Pro Max was released on September 20th. Preorders began on September 13th at 5 a.m. PDT.

iPhone 11 price

The iPhone 11 will retail for $699. The iPhone 11 Pro will retail for $999, and the 11 Pro Max will retail for $1,099. Apple is promoting trade-ins of previous models to lower the cost.

iPhone 11 features

The camera has wide and ultra-wide lenses, rather than wide and telephoto like many people had predicted. This feature gives users the ability to adjust cropping and zooming after the photo is taken. There’s also a new night mode that comes on automatically to brighten photos in low-light situations, and reduces noise. It also has a next-generation Smart HDR.

Smart HDR

QuickTake is a new video feature that makes it easier to take videos by long-pressing on the camera button. Video quality is 4K quality at 60 fps, as well as slo-mo, time-lapse, and expanded dynamic range.

The front-facing camera has been updated to 12 MP with wide-angle selfie support when the phone is in landscape. You can also take 4K video at 60 fps, as well as slow-mo videos.

The iPhone 11 is available in six colors: black, white, red, purple, green, and yellow. The iPhone 11 also features a new anodized aluminum finish, which Apple says is more durable. There’s also Dolby Vision audio.

It’s powered by Apple’s new A13 Bionic chip, which Apple touts as its faster processor ever. As for battery life, the iPhone 11 packs a one-hour-longer battery life than the iPhone XS.

iPhone 11 Pro and 11 Pro Max features

Apple has announced an iPhone 11 Pro and 11 Pro Max that will retail for $999 and $1,099.

Color-wise, there’s a new midnight green color, a refreshed space gray, refreshed silver, and a new gold finish. Apple is also promoting a wider dynamic range display called Super Retina XDR. As was rumored, it has a new triple camera system — a triangular array of lenses in a rectangular camera bump.

Apple has added the ultra-wide lens on both the iPhone 11 Pro and Pro Max, which is shown in the Camera app as a 0.5x button. All a user has to do is just zoom out to see more and take wider shots, from 0.5x to 2x. The ultra-wide has an f/2.4 aperture with a 120-degree field of view.

There are also upgrades to the telephoto and wide-angle lenses, including 100% Focus Pixels. There is a new Night mode to take illuminated low-light photos similar to the Google Pixel Night Sight feature.

Apple is using computational photography to fuse photo data from all three lenses in order to improve image detail. A technology called “Deep Fusion” combines nine images using a neural network analysis on every single pixel. Senior Vice President of Worldwide Marketing Phil Schiller described it as “computational photography mad science.”

Like with the non-Pro version, Apple has upgraded the front camera with a 12-megapixel sensor. The camera is also wider so you can now rotate to landscape on the selfie cam to fit more people into the frame. There is also slow-mo on the front camera for the first time.

Supply chain gives more evidence of base model iPhone 11 beating expectations

Base model iPhone 11 beating expectations

We’ve heard a number of reports of the iPhone 11 beating expectations in terms of early sales. A new supply-chain report today backs the idea that it’s the base model that is leading the way.

That always seemed a likely bet, with the LCD model arguably offering the best bang for the buck, and relatively few reasons to opt for the more expensive Pro model …

AAPL Q4 earnings 2019 analyst roundup

AAPL Q4 earnings are due to be reported on Wednesday, with Apple having given rather wide-ranging guidance of revenue between $61B and $64B.

Second iPhone 11 Pro camera test concludes ‘close to DSLR’ results

We yesterday reported on an iPhone 11 Pro camera test which pitted Apple’s flagship iPhone against a $7,500 Canon 1DX Mark II DSLR. YouTuber Matti Haapoja concluded that the iPhone’s performance was ‘scarily close’ to that of the high-end DSLR.

Today another photographer has also concluded that the contest between the iPhone 11 Pro camera and his Canon EOS 5D MkIV DSLR is ‘a close-run thing’ after an extensive photoshoot in the Scottish highlands…

iPhone 11 empowering creators behind music videos and stunning nature films [Videos]

Yesterday we saw Selena Gomez debut a new song and music video that was shot on the iPhone 11 Pro. Now we’ve got some more examples of just how well Apple’s latest iPhones can capture video and stills without external gear like gimbals, lenses, or special lighting. The iPhone 11 is no doubt empowering creators to push the limits further than ever before.

iPhone Feature Request: Copy ‘Skip Lock Screen’ feature from Google’s Pixel 4

Face Unlock on Google’s Pixel 4 is less secure than the iPhone’s Face ID, but it does have one feature I’d like to see Apple copy: Skip Lock Screen.

Copying that would be perfectly fair, as Google has recently confirmed that it will be copying at least part of Face ID’s Require Attention feature…

Night mode versus Night Sight: MacWorld test says iPhone 11 beats Pixel 4

When Apple announced the low-light photography capabilities of the iPhone 11, everyone was eagerly awaiting a new Night mode versus Night Sight test, aka Apple against Google.

PC World conducted one back in September, but that was against the Pixel 3 – the smartphone originally crowned the king of low-light photography. There were objections then that it was comparing different generations of smartphone tech, but it seems the position hasn’t changed now that the Pixel 4 is out…

Bloomberg: Apple focused on augmented reality in 2020 with new iPhone and AR glasses product, ARM Macs coming

Apple is set to introduce major new augmented reality initiatives next year with new 3D rear sensors for the iPhone and the likely debut of Apple’s long-rumored AR headset product.

Bloomberg says Apple has “targeted” to launch the headset in 2020, featuring holographic displays in the lenses. The exact form factor and use cases for the headset is still unclear. Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo previously said that Apple would release an AR headset in mid-2020 with a “third-party brand collaboration.”

The latest report from Apple analyst Dan Ives at Wedbush corroborates the recent undercurrent of optimism we have heard in recent weeks regarding iPhone sales strength.

According to the analyst, overall iPhone 11 demand is “much better” than expectations with China being particularly strong, and iPhone 11 Pro demand exceeding estimates in the United States. Wedbush also tipped its hat on what it sees coming over the horizon for the iPhone in 2020.

iPhone 11 Review — a camera-centric follow-up to the iPhone XR [Video]

Last year I stated that the iPhone XR was the phone that most iPhone users should buy, so it should come as no surprise that the follow-up to the XR comes with a similar recommendation in our iPhone 11 review.

The iPhone 11 is, for all intents and purposes, a more powerful and more feature-filled iPhone XR. Its flagship feature, a second camera with an ultra-wide focal length, is a noteworthy upgrade for camera enthusiasts, and its $699 starting price, which is $50 cheaper than its predecessor, is a refreshing change trend of more expensive tech year-over-year.

Yet, outside of some substantial camera upgrades, the remainder of the enhancements that come with the iPhone 11 don’t necessarily warrant an upgrade if you already own the iPhone XR. Watch our hands-on video review for the details.

iPhone 11 Pro Diary: It’s no travel camera, but it’s a great social one

iPhone 11 Pro camera review

I’d so far given the iPhone 11 Pro camera a very high bar to meet: Could it be good enough that it would be the only camera I’d need while travelling? The answer to that question was a resounding no, even after double-checking.

But that’s mostly because I demand very high quality from my travel photos, so noise that would be largely unnoticeable at web-viewing size would disturb me in prints or when viewing on a large screen, both things I do with travel shots. I also want the ability to shoot 30-second exposures on demand, not when my camera decides it’s dark enough to permit it.

A recent night out, however, provided the opportunity to put the camera to the test in a more common situation…

U1 chip in iPhone 11 is Apple’s own design, but compatible with other devices

Apple's U1 chip (probably)

A teardown of the U1 chip in the iPhone 11 has confirmed that it is Apple’s own design. There had been earlier speculation that Apple was using a Decawave Ultra Wideband DW1000 chip that has similar capabilities, offering precise radio-based positioning down to 10 cm.

iFixit says Apple’s chip is a different design to the DW1000, but uses the same standards and is compatible with third-party devices using the Decawave chip…
