iOS 13 Features

During its WWDC 2019 keynote, Apple officially unveiled iOS 13 for iPhone. While we had a good idea of what to expect, Apple still offered some surprises. There’s a new swipe-style keyboard called QuickPath, the Photos app has received notable new features and changes with smart clutter reduction software, a new editing experience, and a new “Photos” tab, while Siri Shortcuts has become more capable with new multi-step and suggested automations. The update also brings a new Siri feature that allows users to instantly reply to messages.

As for one of the most anticipated features, the system-wide Dark Mode has officially arrived on iOS. Apple showed off the new dark theme with the tagline “iOS now lives in the dark.”

Comment: Mouse support in iOS 13 would solve iPad ergonomic issues for me

iPad mouse support in iOS 13

Being in school IT, I’ve been around the iPad from day one. I’ve owned just about every iPad over the years (original, 2, 3, mini, Air, mini 4, 10.5-inch Pro, 12.9-inch Pro, and 11-inch Pro). I’ve deployed thousands of iPads since 2010, and I’ve worked with countless students and teachers on using the iPad in the classroom. I know the iPad. I can explain the good, and I can vent about the bad. I know people who use the iPad full time, and I know people who used to use the iPad. It appears iOS 13 is going to be a big one for the iPad, so I am excited. There has been recent discussion around mouse support coming to the iPad as an accessibility feature in iOS 13, and that is welcome news for me.

Comment: iOS 13 will be the most important release to date for iPad

iPad Pro with iOS 13

On a recent episode of Mac Power Users, Stephen Hackett and David Sparks were looking at the iPad as a laptop replacement. I felt like it was one of the most refreshing discussions of the iPad and iOS that I had heard in a while. They looked at things about the iPad that give them joy and things that do not. The show got me thinking about the history of iOS on the iPad, and where things got stagnant. For me, the iPad as a device became stagnant around the time of the iPhone 6 Plus debut. The reality is that the iPhone has gotten better about handling iPad tasks a lot faster than the iPad has vs. a macOS powered laptop. Since then, iOS on the iPad hasn’t changed dramatically outside of how multitasking works. If you want to listen to a great discussion about the good and bad parts of the iPad lifestyle, I would give this episode a listen. As I think about the future of the iPad, I have come to the realization that iOS 13 on the iPad will be the most important release to date.

iOS 13 Wishlist: Some features that could help me go iOS only

2018 iPad Pro

It’s getting to the end of 2018, and I am excited looking ahead to 2019. This point in the year is when I start thinking forward to what the next round of iOS updates will bring to my day job and my computing life. I am likely looking at purchasing 250 of whatever non-pro iPad Apple releases in the spring, so I am starting to consider what software these devices will be running soon after school starts. Based on rumors we’ve heard for a while, iOS 13 looks to be an “iPad focused” release, so I am expecting big things.
