Say hello to the future

Check out our top iPhone X stories:

Apple has announced its long awaited bezel-less, premium 10th anniversary smartphone, iPhone X at its September event. Priced at $999 for the 64GB model and $1,149 for 256GB, iPhone X is Apple’s most expensive iPhone yet.

The iPhone X has a brand-new design and is the first iPhone to feature an OLED display. The iPhone X has a 5.8-inch screen with minimal bezels, giving it a physical size close to the iPhone 8, with a screen size larger than the iPhone 8 Plus.

The iPhone X features glass on the front and back with a stainless steel body that seamlessly meet at the device’s curved edges. Other flagship features include the devices new 3D sensors that bring Face ID as a replacement to Touch ID and wireless charging support.

The iPhone X along with the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus feature the A11 Bionic processor. The all new chip has four efficiency cores that are up to 70% faster than A10 Fusion and two performance cores that are up to 25% faster. The new models also have an Apple designed GPU that offers up to 30% better performance than the A10 chip.

iPhone X will be available for preorder on October 27 and will launch on November 3.

Apple VP Greg Joswiak defends iPhone X notch as one of the company’s most impressive pieces of tech

iOS exploits

While I personally find the iPhone X notch almost unnoticeable much of the time, and cute when it’s visible, others have been more critical. There have been complaints that it’s asymmetrical and un-Apple-like in its design, and even that it ‘ruins’ the display.

But Apple VP Greg Joswiak has defended it as one of the company’s most impressive technical achievements …

Consumer Reports ranks iPhone 8/8 Plus over iPhone X after battery and durability differences

Consumer Reports has published its 2017 iPhone comparison and in it the publication has somehow rated the iPhone X below the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus, but there’s certainly no need to trade down if you’re an iPhone X owner. While there’s nothing wrong with either iPhone 8 model, CR points to differences in battery life and durability testing for its ranking that may not apply to real world usage.

Apple’s US smartphone market share dropped 8 points in run-up to iPhone X launch – Kantar

Market intelligence company Kantar said that iOS market share in the U.S. fell from 40.6% in the three months ending in October 2016 to 32.9% in the same quarter this year. Apple saw similar significant drops in other key markets, says the firm, as customers waited for the iPhone X to go on sale.

Kantar says that the drop was inevitable, but still puts pressure on Apple …

Here’s how future iPhones could use camera depth data to create impressive Portrait Mode videos

One of the headline features of the dual camera system in recent iPhones is Portrait Mode, an effect that simulates a DSLR-style shallow depth of field by intelligently blurring the background of your photos. Apple took the feature a step further with the iPhone X, adding Portrait Mode selfies and introducing simulated Portrait Lighting.

While these features are currently limited to still photos, future iPhones could someday use the same technology to bring the depth effect to videos, a stunning look currently only possible with high-end video gear or a considerable amount of work in post-production. This feature could be a game changer for videographers, editors, and consumers alike, who have already embraced the iPhone as a serious filmmaking tool. With some effort, the effect is actually possible with today’s iPhones. Here’s how it can be done.

iPhone X will set all-time record and drive a full year of growth, predicts IHS Markit

Analytics company IHS Markit – whose clients include 85% of Fortune 500 companies – says that the iPhone X hit 2% of the active installed iPhone base within three weeks of its first availability.

In the US, iPhone X adoption after three weeks matched the adoption of iPhone 8 Plus and beat early adoption levels for both the iPhone 8 and 7 Plus. Only the iPhone 7 model had greater initial success. In Japan, initial iPhone X adoption was as good as or better than any recent iPhone launch, and matched the level of the iPhone 7.

It is predicting that the new flagship phone will set an all-time record this quarter …

One month later: iPhone X has far exceeded my expectations [Video]

The iPhone X was a big risk for Apple, because of the removal of the Home button and its heavy reliance on gestures, but it’s clear to me that Apple succeeded in making it work. After using the iPhone X day-to-day for almost four weeks, I’ve become well-accustomed to it as my daily driver.

At its core, the iPhone X is basically an enhanced iPhone 8, but its reliance on gestures, significantly reduced bezels, TrueDepth Camera, and OLED display make it look, feel, and at times, perform like an entirely new device. There are other things to consider as well: the glass and metal design, and upgraded telephoto camera hardware, to name a few.

For as much flack as Apple has received for the iPhone X’s so-called notch, and some of the nagging issues that continue to persist throughout iOS, the release is nonetheless a remarkable achievement.

China’s BOE offers iPhone-exclusive OLED production lines as it seeks to take business from Samsung

China’s largest display manufacturer, BOE, is reported to be making a serious bid to win OLED orders for future iPhones. It’s said to have offered to construct not just one but two large-scale OLED production lines which would be used exclusively for Apple orders.

Apple is currently dependent on Samsung for all its OLED panels for the iPhone X, a position the company almost certainly wants to change …
