Poll: Looking back now, did Apple exhibit ‘courage’ in removing the headphone jack from iPhones?

Did it take courage to drop the headphone jack to create a wireless future?

Apple was widely mocked when Phil Schiller used the term ‘courage’ to describe its decision to drop the headphone socket from iPhones, starting with the iPhone 7/Plus – a likely callback to a Steve Jobs comment on the decision not to support Flash on iOS devices.

The reason to move on: courage. The courage to move on and do something new that betters all of us.

But two-and-a-half years on, does the decision now seem to have lived up to the word?

wireless power sharing iPhone 11

How should iPhone 11 wireless power sharing work? [Poll]

Among the exciting predictions that Ming-Chi Kuo shared for Apple’s 2019 hardware lineup yesterday was the iPhone 11 arriving with “bilateral wireless charging.” This could allow an iPhone to seamlessly juice up AirPods, other iPhones, or potentially any Qi-enabled device. Does this sound like a useful feature to you? How do you think it should work?

Poll: Would you like to see Slide Over and Control Center in macOS?

Mac control panel

There has long been debate over the extent to which macOS and iOS will converge. Some think we’ve already gone too far down that route, with Launchpad coming in for particular criticism as an unnecessary child-like interface (though it can be made more useful). At the other extreme, some think Apple should go as far as touchscreen Macs and enable people to run either OS on both Macs and iPads.

Apple itself has consistently said that it considers Macs and iPads to be different categories of device, a message somewhat diluted by ads referring to the iPad as a computer.

But I was struck by a suggestion of two iOS features that might work on Mac …

What type of pro monitor would you like to see from Apple this year? [Poll]

2018 saw Apple finally update the computer some multi-display desktop fans have long been holding their breath for: Mac mini. As 2019 begins, the professional market is looking towards a massive refresh of the Mac Pro and native display offerings from Apple.

However, with CES these past two years showing off so many OLED and 8K displays, the question begs, how can Apple truly innovate in the pro monitor space this year?

Comment: Should Apple bring the iPad Pro design to the iPhone 11 to create a modern iPhone 5? [Poll]

iPhone 11 design

As we prepare for the iPhone 11 later this year, the first reports are starting to emerge to offer some details on the device’s features. One thing that is unclear, however, is whether or not the iPhone 11 (iPhone XI?) will usher in a new design, or feature the same edge-to-edge design of the iPhone X.

As PC makers announce high-end OLED laptops, would you pay more for an OLED Mac? [Poll]

At CES 2019, we saw more computer manufacturers flaunt luxury models with OLED displays. While they still remain far pricier than their LCD counterparts, it’s exciting to see mainstream manufactures at least entertaining the option.

Both Dell and subsidiary Alienware have announced new OLED offerings this week for their notebooks, however specific pricing is yet to be confirmed. Ultimately, we know they won’t come cheap, and the only question is, how much more are you willing to pay?

Poll: Should Apple use a ‘reverse notch’ to add Face ID to MacBooks?

Face ID MacBook approach

It can only be a matter of time before Apple adds Face ID to MacBooks, but the question is: what approach should the company take?

Apple has applied two different solutions to iPhones and iPads. For iPhones, Apple opted for super-slim bezels and a notch to house the TrueDepth cameras and other sensors. For the iPad, the company instead chose to keep the bezels thick enough to house the module.

Should it adopt the iPad solution for MacBooks, or should it copy an approach seen in one of the latest Asus laptops … ?

What features and changes do you want Apple to focus on with the 2019 iPhones? [Poll]

iPhone XR

Yesterday, an analyst report from Nomura predicted that Apple’s 2019 iPhones will not feature any physical changes. This comes as the iPhone X design was introduced in 2017 and made its way to the iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, and iPhone XR.

Do you think this is the right move on Apple’s part? What do you want Apple to focus on with the 2019 iPhones?

Should Apple make this modern display seen in the new Mac mini’s user guide? [Poll]

At its October event earlier this week, Apple officially unveiled a new Mac mini after over 4 years of neglect. With the first reviewers getting their hands-on the new machine, we’re getting a closer look at the details of the new Mac mini.

Included in the Mac mini box is Apple’s normal ‘Getting Started’ guide, but in that guide is an image of seemingly non-existent Apple display…

Would you pay the premium for a 512GB iPhone? [Poll]

We heard news this week that Apple could bring three storage tiers to the 5.8- and 6.5-inch iPhones this year, with the top end offering 512GB. While we’ve heard that the base price of the OLED models could drop this year, the addition of an iPhone X Plus along with three storage tiers could definitely boost the devices’ average selling price. This will also likely mean the most expensive iPhones yet. How about you, would you spring for a 512GB model?

What do you think of the new features in iOS 12 so far? [Poll]

This evening, Apple officially released the first public beta of iOS 12 after three weeks of developer testing. This means anyone can download and install the latest iOS version on their iPhone and iPad for free, though it’s still in beta form and does come with some bugs and annoyances.

Are you running the iOS 12 beta (developer or public version) on your iPhone or iPad? If so, what do you think so far?
