iPhone 9to5Mac

Introduced in 2007 by Steve Jobs, iPhone is Apple’s flagship iOS device and easily its most popular product around the world. Software wise, it runs iOS and includes a large collection of mobile apps through the App Store.

Since its introduction, Apple has released at least one new phone every single year. In recent years, that has typically been in the fall. iPhones are sold through multiple retail channels including Apple Stores, cellular stores, Best Buy, and other major electronic retailers. iPhones can be bought with a single up front payment, financed through the iPhone Upgrade Program, or financed through a cellular carrier.

Apple’s smartphone has become much more than just a phone since its debut. The iPhone can act as your primary camera, music player, GPS device, email client, mobile banking system, messaging device, movie player, and much more.

Would you pay the premium for a 512GB iPhone? [Poll]

We heard news this week that Apple could bring three storage tiers to the 5.8- and 6.5-inch iPhones this year, with the top end offering 512GB. While we’ve heard that the base price of the OLED models could drop this year, the addition of an iPhone X Plus along with three storage tiers could definitely boost the devices’ average selling price. This will also likely mean the most expensive iPhones yet. How about you, would you spring for a 512GB model?

When does Apple release new iPhones?

AirPower

iPhone buying decisions vary from person to person, and not everyone cares about having the latest version. This works for a lot of consumers since you can generally buy any modern iPhone and have a positive experience — especially if you’re upgrading after a few generations.

Every summer I hear from family members who are super excited that they just bought a new iPhone. If I mention that a new model is just around the corner and we even have an idea about what will be different, it never changes their buying decision. That can be hard for me to understand, but it works for a lot of people. Just look at Apple’s iPhone sales numbers during the quarter before a new model is introduced.

If you do care about buying the latest iPhone as soon as it comes out, it’s not too hard to guess when new iPhones will be introduced based on recent launches.

Exclusive excerpt from upcoming book by ex-Apple engineer explores first iPhone software keyboard design process

Ken Kocienda worked at Apple from 2001 through 2016. On September 4, Kocienda is releasing a new book ‘Creative Selection’ (preorder: Amazon, iBooks), that details Apple’s design process from the inside, retelling his own anecdotes of working on the iPhone and iPad, demoing to Steve Jobs and more.

In this exclusive excerpt, you get a sense of how designing the iPhone software keyboard was anything but obvious. In late 2005, Apple paused all internal development on iPhone and told all engineers to invent keyboard concepts. This excerpt details how Kocienda’s winning design was shot down by Phil Schiller and Tony Fadell, which sent him back to the drawing board …

Comment: I’d love to see Apple offer dual-SIM iPhones worldwide, but am not optimistic

There have been a number of suggestions recently that this year’s iPhones might support dual SIMs. The first, from Ming-Chi Kuo, reported that this would apply to the flagship model, the 6.5-inch OLED iPhone.

We found supporting evidence in iOS 12 beta 5, with references to ‘second SIM status,’ ‘second SIM tray status’ and ‘dual sim device.’

A new report on Friday was, however, less encouraging …
