iPhone walkie-talkie

Introduced in 2007 by Steve Jobs, iPhone is Apple’s flagship iOS device and easily its most popular product around the world. Software wise, it runs iOS and includes a large collection of mobile apps through the App Store.

Since its introduction, Apple has released at least one new phone every single year. In recent years, that has typically been in the fall. iPhones are sold through multiple retail channels including Apple Stores, cellular stores, Best Buy, and other major electronic retailers. iPhones can be bought with a single up front payment, financed through the iPhone Upgrade Program, or financed through a cellular carrier.

Apple’s smartphone has become much more than just a phone since its debut. The iPhone can act as your primary camera, music player, GPS device, email client, mobile banking system, messaging device, movie player, and much more.

Comment: Near-record iPhone sales this year seems a very safe prediction

Supply chain sources today predicted near-record iPhone sales this year.

Shipments of new iPhone series to be unveiled in mid-September are expected to reach 70-75 million units by the end of the year, the best performance since the launch of iPhone 6 series.

There are two elements to this prediction, and both seem to me to be safe bets …

Report: Apple to ship highest number of new iPhones this fall since iPhone 6 peak

Apple’s 2018 iPhones are shaping up to land with a big splash. Although Apple is yet to announce its new models, or its event to announce the new models, the expectations are already high; three new models, an iPhone X successor, a new 6.5-inch iPhone X Plus and a mass market 6.1-inch LCD iPhone with thin bezels and Face ID just like the iPhone X.

Digitimes says that Apple suppliers are gearing up to ship the most new iPhones ever, fuelled by strong adoption of the ~$700 6.1-inch model, which will bring the best parts of the iPhone X to accessible price points.

Bloomberg: New OLED iPhones to feature speed and camera improvements, Apple may not use ‘Plus’ label for 6.5-inch model

Bloomberg is out with a new report this morning that doubles down on many of the 2018 iPhone rumors we’ve been hearing for a while, along with a few new tidbits on Apple’s product line.

Echoing previous reports, the design of the three new models will mirror the iPhone X, in 5.8-inch, and new 6.1-inch and 6.5-inch screen sizes. Aside from design and screen size, Bloomberg says Apple will focus on speed improvements and upgrades to camera quality.

Feature Request: Add an Undo button to the iPhone keyboard, like the iPad one

I can’t claim any credit for coming up with the idea for this feature request – it just seemed such a no-brainer to me that I’m endorsing John Gruber’s suggestion.

Shake to Undo is problematic enough that I think Apple should have figured out something better for the iPhone by now. (For accessibility reasons, you can turn Shake to Undo off, but if you do, you don’t have any Undo at all.) My best suggestion would be to take away some space from the auto-suggestion row above the keyboard and put in an Undo button on the left, just like the iPad …

Sources: Apple reaches deal with Simply Mac to offer official iPhone screen repairs in ~30 stores across the US

Update: Simply Mac has said that there are multiple inaccuracies in the story, but did not go into detail. We’ll update more if we hear more.

Simply Mac is one of the largest Apple Authorised Service Provider chains in the world, however it has had a fractious relationship with Apple in recent months. Repair stores need special equipment to conduct official iPhone repairs, such as machines that pair a Touch ID or Face ID Secure Enclave to the new display unit, but Apple does not give these out freely. Simply Mac had resorted to conducting third-party unofficial screen repairs, which angered Apple.

However, 9to5Mac has learned that the two companies have now reached a deal. Apple is paying to fit the new machinery and implement various security upgrades into about 30 Simply Mac stores. In exchange, Simply Mac will cease conducting all third-party repairs.

Would you pay the premium for a 512GB iPhone? [Poll]

We heard news this week that Apple could bring three storage tiers to the 5.8- and 6.5-inch iPhones this year, with the top end offering 512GB. While we’ve heard that the base price of the OLED models could drop this year, the addition of an iPhone X Plus along with three storage tiers could definitely boost the devices’ average selling price. This will also likely mean the most expensive iPhones yet. How about you, would you spring for a 512GB model?
