iPhone 9to5Mac

Introduced in 2007 by Steve Jobs, iPhone is Apple’s flagship iOS device and easily its most popular product around the world. Software wise, it runs iOS and includes a large collection of mobile apps through the App Store.

Since its introduction, Apple has released at least one new phone every single year. In recent years, that has typically been in the fall. iPhones are sold through multiple retail channels including Apple Stores, cellular stores, Best Buy, and other major electronic retailers. iPhones can be bought with a single up front payment, financed through the iPhone Upgrade Program, or financed through a cellular carrier.

Apple’s smartphone has become much more than just a phone since its debut. The iPhone can act as your primary camera, music player, GPS device, email client, mobile banking system, messaging device, movie player, and much more.

Korean report claims Apple will drop the iPhone X notch in 2019 iPhones

A Korean report claims that Apple will drop the notch from its 2019 OLED iPhones. The company is said to be working on a new design where the screen will ‘completely fill the front of new iPhones.’

No details are provided about how Apple would deal with all of the technology currently housed in the notch. This includes the front-facing camera, separate infra-red camera for Face ID, dot projector, flood illuminator, speaker, microphone, ambient light sensor and proximity sensor …

Here’s how the iPhone 6s performs before and after a battery replacement [Video]

Apple confirmed in December that it does slow older iPhones as their batteries age and are unable to handle a full load. The company is currently offering users a discounted rate for battery replacements, giving users the opportunity to return to full power.

A new video shared today offers a great look at just how noticeable the performance difference is between an iPhone 6s with performance throttling, and one with a brand new battery just replaced by Apple…

American firm claims it can unlock encrypted iPhones running iOS 11 — for $15,000 and up

Yet another security company is pitching high-paying customers on the ability to possibly crack iPhones running a version of iOS 11, Forbes reports. US-based firm Grayshift is reportedly advertising access to a $15,00o tool called GrayKey that offers 300 attempts to access data on encrypted iPhones, while a pricier $30,000 version offers unlimited attempts.

Stanford student protestors say Apple hasn’t done enough to help iPhone addiction

A group of Stanford students protested outside the Palo Alto Apple Store this weekend, campaigning for Apple to do more to help address technology addiction. The group referred to research that showed addiction to iPhones (and smartphones in general) hurts relationships, productivity and causes stress. They want Apple to add new iOS features to let users easily see how much time users spend using their phone, and a ‘distraction free’ toggle akin to Airplane Mode.

Apple reseller forced to call off clearance sale after thousands queue up for ten $50 iPhones

What does it take to pack a mall with 10,000+ people in the age of digital retail? $50 iPhones will certainly do the trick. That’s what happened in Malaysia over the weekend when an Apple reseller advertised fire sale prices on old inventory — and the insane influx of customers ultimately caused the retailer to call off the spring cleaning promotion.

Rarely-revealed Apple numbers let us calculate the lifespan of a typical Apple device, says analyst

I’ve argued in the past that the longevity of Apple devices is one of the reasons the so-called ‘Apple tax’ is lower than it appears. Until now, there hasn’t been any hard data on the average lifespan of an Apple product, but one analyst thinks he has figured out how to calculate it from Apple’s own numbers …

Longer upgrade cycles and growing purchases of used smartphones said to threaten iPhone sales

Longer upgrade cycles and an increasing number of consumers opting to buy used models poses a threat to future sales of flagship models from the likes of Apple and Samsung, argue industry commentators.

Back in 2014, the average upgrade cycle was 23 months – likely attributable to most consumers upgrading every two years, while a much smaller number upgraded every year. But that number has already hit 31 months, says BayStreet Research, and is set to climb higher still  …

How to check your iPhone’s warranty & repair coverage

One of the best things about Apple’s products is the customer service that comes with your purchase. In addition to the option of paying more for AppleCare+, every Apple product comes with a one-year warranty for hardware repair coverage.

When that inevitable day of hardware failure comes, the first thing you’ll want to do is check your warranty status. Here’s how to do that…

Hands-on with iOS 11.3 battery health features on a performance throttled iPhone

iPhone battery replacement

My iPhone X lost a fight with concrete on Sunday morning when I folded up my jogging stroller and forgot the phone in its storage compartment. The smashed iPhone X is on its way to Apple’s repair facility (yes, the one that makes all those 911 calls) and I’m living on an iPhone 6 Plus for the week.

A few observations: the modern haptic engine is light years ahead of the 2014 vibration motor, cameras on newer iPhones have improved dramatically, and older iPhones feel slow in comparison with or without throttling. More on my experience with a throttled iPhone so far below.

Cellebrite claiming it can crack iPhones on iOS 11, but may not affect latest iOS updates

Cellebrite, the mobile forensics firm that helped the US government break into the San Bernardino shooter’s iPhone 5c, is apparently claiming it can crack any iPhone even if it’s running iOS 11. This is said to apply even to the latest flagship iPhones, although it’s possible this only applies to exploits fixed in recent updates to iOS 11.
