Introduced in 2007 by Steve Jobs, iPhone is Apple’s flagship iOS device and easily its most popular product around the world. Software wise, it runs iOS and includes a large collection of mobile apps through the App Store.

Since its introduction, Apple has released at least one new phone every single year. In recent years, that has typically been in the fall. iPhones are sold through multiple retail channels including Apple Stores, cellular stores, Best Buy, and other major electronic retailers. iPhones can be bought with a single up front payment, financed through the iPhone Upgrade Program, or financed through a cellular carrier.

Apple’s smartphone has become much more than just a phone since its debut. The iPhone can act as your primary camera, music player, GPS device, email client, mobile banking system, messaging device, movie player, and much more.

Apple’s guidance failure resulted from three errors, suggests analyst; but he’s optimistic

Apple's failure

When it comes to mistakes, over-estimating your quarterly revenue by between $5B and $9B is a pretty big one – and the market was understandably shocked when Apple admitted it had done so. One analyst says Apple’s failure to predict its holiday quarter can be explained by three errors, and he’s written a blog post explaining each.

But he also believes there are three reasons for optimism about the coming year …

Comment: The 2019 iPhone renders are ugly, but I would like to see 3+ cameras

2019 iPhone

Yesterday saw renders of what Digit claims to be a first look at the 2019 iPhone, and 9to5Mac readers weren’t impressed by the look.

That’s incredibly ugly.

No offence to the person that created that, but ewww.

No. Just no.

This is a horrendous design!

But while I agree about the aesthetics, I would like to see Apple add cameras to the iPhone …

Renders purport to depict ‘iPhone 11’ prototypes, features three rear cameras and square camera bump

iPhone 11

The rumors for the 2019 iPhone haven’t really kicked into full gear yet, however reliable leaker Onleaks partnered with Digit.in to provide renders of what he believes are legitimate 2019 iPhone prototypes.

The images show that the new iPhone would feature three cameras on the back, in a particularly strange aesthetic arrangement, housed in a huge camera square bump. The middle of the three cameras is positioned out of line with the other two, and the camera is offset above …

Comment: This may be crunch time for AAPL on iPhone pricing – and revive hope of an iPhone SE 2

iPhone pricing

I argued almost exactly two years ago that we were approaching the point at which Apple might have to think the unthinkable on iPhone pricing.

Apple cannot afford to have anything resembling a sense of entitlement when it comes to customers at the premium end of the market. Leaving aside those geeks who have their own technical or philosophical reasons for favoring Android, it’s largely been the case to date that anyone who can afford to buy an iPhone does so almost automatically. That fact is testament to Apple’s extraordinary marketing prowess.

But players like Google, Huawei, Xiaomi, Lenovo and OnePlus are learning fast […] So while Apple’s current dominance of the premium end of the market gives it a massive head-start, it can’t count on forever remaining the automatic choice. It will need to learn to compete on a slightly more level playing field as its competitors continue to up their game.

Yesterday’s news suggests that crunch time may now have arrived …

Flagship iPhones to be made in India as Apple moves beyond low-cost models

iPhones made in India

Flagship model iPhones will be made in India for the first time, says a new report, potentially taking the company’s business in the emerging market ‘to a new level.’ It follows a recent report that senior Apple execs are to meet government officials there next month to discuss manufacturing plans.

The move will also see assembly in India carried out by Foxconn rather than Wistron, which is currently Apple’s sole iPhone assembler in the country …

Some iOS 12.1.2 users reporting bug that kills cellular data — here’s how to fix it

After quickly releasing iOS 12.1.2 to the public just days after developers had a brief period to beta test the software update, user reports have trickled in about a bug which kills cellular data. While the issue is by no means widespread — no one from the 9to5 team has experienced it — it’s serious enough to merit a range of Twitter complaints and a Forbes article detailing the bug.

Companies in China boycotting Apple, reportedly threatening to fire iPhone users

iPhone in China

Chinese firms are rallying around Huawei after the tech giant has seen immense pressure over recent weeks, climaxing with the arrest of the company’s CFO. Chinese companies are now threatening employees by demanding they not purchase any Apple products whatsoever, going so far to withhold bonuses, garnish wages or even terminate an uncooperative employee.

A report from Nikkei Asian Review details how companies have even offered workers tremendous subsidies on Huawei purchases, with discounts ranging anywhere from 10% up to free devices.

Comment: Qualcomm is playing ridiculously high-stakes poker as iPhones pulled from sale

Apple Qualcomm dispute

The long-running patent dispute between Apple and Qualcomm took a dramatic turn yesterday when the Cupertino company took two iPhone models off the market in Germany in response to an injunction.

While the court ruling appeared to be a victory for Qualcomm, it may well be a temporary one – as well as a very, very expensive one for the wireless chipmaker …

Mobile advertising booming with nearly $40 billion spent in 2018, $64B expected by 2020

A market research study by AppsFlyer details the ever-growing mobile advertising world, as $38.9 billion was reportedly spent in 2018, with 34% growth expected by 2020, reaching $64.1 billion, globally.

The study attributes the growth to the fact there are more smartphones than ever paired with an ever-growing app catalogue. Thus, more paid campaigns have resulted in more ad spend than ever.

German court says iPhone infringed Qualcomm patent, sales ban pending Apple appeal [update]

Qualcomm has secured another court victory over Apple this week, this time in Germany. A court has ruled that some iPhone models, featuring Intel modems, violate a Qualcomm patent.

The court said that infringing iPhone models could no longer be sold in Germany, however the ban will not go into effect if Apple appeals. Apple is appealing the decision and is pulling iPhone 7 and iPhone 8 from store shelves in the meantime …
