iPhone 9to5Mac

Introduced in 2007 by Steve Jobs, iPhone is Apple’s flagship iOS device and easily its most popular product around the world. Software wise, it runs iOS and includes a large collection of mobile apps through the App Store.

Since its introduction, Apple has released at least one new phone every single year. In recent years, that has typically been in the fall. iPhones are sold through multiple retail channels including Apple Stores, cellular stores, Best Buy, and other major electronic retailers. iPhones can be bought with a single up front payment, financed through the iPhone Upgrade Program, or financed through a cellular carrier.

Apple’s smartphone has become much more than just a phone since its debut. The iPhone can act as your primary camera, music player, GPS device, email client, mobile banking system, messaging device, movie player, and much more.

Opinion: iOS 12 could finally fix systemic frame rate issues and interface inconsistencies

Today’s news about Apple putting new features on the back burner for iOS 12 means that the company will finally be focusing on polishing up its mobile operating system. After years of interface inconsistencies and frame rate issues, iOS may be getting some much-needed attention on the finer details.

While frame rate issues have gone unnoticed by many, prominent YouTuber and entrepreneur Chris Pirillo has been documenting his findings over the years with a public list of issues. The most jarring and obvious frame rate issue is when invoking Siri and trying to access Control Center. This is an example of an “unlikely situation, so Apple didn’t check,” which some feel has been Apple’s software mantra with iOS 7 and beyond.

While it’s good to hear about Apple shifting focus to zero in on refinements, I would argue these sort of issues should have never should have shipped to begin with.

How to stream President Trump’s first State of the Union address on Mac, iPad, iPhone & Apple TV

President Trump will give his first State of the Union address this evening, and all eyes will be on whether he manages to stick to the speech on the teleprompter or goes off script. Things didn’t get off to the best of starts when members of Congress were sent invitations which misspelled ‘Union’ as ‘Uniom.

The address will of course be broadcast on all the major networks, but you’ll also be able to watch it online on any of your Apple devices …

KGI predicts 6.1-inch LCD iPhone will help Apple rebound from ‘lower-than-expected’ iPhone X sales

Reliable Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo of KGI Securities is today out with a trio of new investor notes that offer some additional color on the supplier breakdown for this year’s new iPhones. The analyst has previously stated that Apple will introduce three new iPhones this year, including two OLED models at 5.8-inches and 6.5-inches, and an LCD model at 6.1-inches…

Comment: Digitimes is almost certainly wrong about Apple abandoning 5.8-inch OLED model, but one possibility exists

Today’s Digitimes report that Apple will abandon a 5.8-inch OLED successor to the iPhone X this year is almost certainly nonsense.

The site suggests that Apple will release only one OLED model this year, which would be the 6.5-inch one first suggested in a KGI report. This year’s 5.8-inch model would, claims Digitimes, be an LCD one …

Report: iPhone 8, 8 Plus and X accounted for 61% of US iPhone sales in Q4

Apple’s new 2017 iPhone models – iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus and iPhone X – made up for about 61% of iPhone sales in the United States, according to a new consumer study from CIRP. This is lower than the 72% share iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus took in the same quarter a year ago.

Comparisons to the 2016 cycle are difficult due to the staggered debut of the (higher priced) iPhone X in November, but it seems like older iPhone models sold better than usual during the holiday season.

Review: The Zoom iQ7 Lightning mic is a suitable companion to your Shot on iPhone toolkit

While I’ve been highly impressed with the video capabilities of recent iPhone cameras, the accompanying microphone has always left something to be desired. Hands-on: ‘Flir One Pro’ turns your iPhone into a thermal imaging camera that’s helpful for homeowners [Video]

The human eye is amazing, but it’s limited as to what it can see. That’s where imaging tools like thermal cameras can come in handy, allowing you to see and diagnose problems that are normally invisible to the eye. This thermal, or infrared energy, is present in all matter, but because its wavelength is beyond the scope of what the human eye can discern, it’s invisible to us without the necessary tools.

Thanks to modern-day smartphones like the iPhone, these tools are now a lot more accessible to the everyday person. One such example is the Flir One Pro — a portable thermal camera attachment that connects directly to an iPhone’s Lightning port.

If you’re a homeowner, or just someone who’s curious about the type of technology that allows you to see through walls and identify heat signatures like you’re in the movie Predator, then Flir’s One Pro is a mighty-impressive, if not tiny, piece of kit. Watch our hands-on video walkthrough inside for a look at how it works.

Comment: With a rumored new iPhone lineup, it’s time for new names

I’ve commented before on Apple’s rather messy iPhone lineup. The company currently sells the iPhone SE, the iPhone 6s, the iPhone 7, the iPhone 8 and the iPhone X. Given the Plus model variations, and ignoring colors and storage capacities, that’s eight different phones across four different sizes.

If we ignore the relatively minor form factor differences between the iPhone 6s, 7 and 8, that’s also three different designs.

But KGI’s predictions of what we can expect this fall, reiterated today, would make for a much more sensible lineup …

Hands-on: Ugreen’s 20000mAh MFi Power Bank with built-in Lightning cable

We’ve reviewed several Ugreen products in the past, but this is probably the most useful one that I’ve seen thus far. It’s a huge 20,000 mAh MFi Power Bank, which is capable of recharging your iPhone five times over. That in and of itself is nice, but the real benefit of this particular USB power pack is its built-in Lightning cable, which easily tucks away inside the unit for storage.

Would you disable iPhone throttling at the risk of unexpected shutdowns? [Poll]

Earlier this evening, Tim Cook surprisingly announced that, with a future iOS update, users will be able to turn off iPhone performance throttling. Cook noted, however, that such a move would put users at risk for unexpected shutdowns as their battery ages.

We’re curious, would you turn off iPhone throttling as your battery aged, if you knew you could suffer from unexpected shutdowns?

Tim Cook says users will be able to turn off iPhone battery performance throttling in future iOS update

Apple had already said that a future iOS update will give users more insight into the state of their battery. In an interview with ABC News, Tim Cook was asked for his take on Apple slowing down iPhones with degraded batteries. He revealed that the developer beta including these features will be released next month, with a public release to follow after.

Moreover, he says that this forthcoming update will give users the option to disable the throttling to maintain normal CPU performance, but will be at risk of unexpected shutdowns.

Should Apple be made responsible for making iPhones less addictive?

A thoughtful new piece by Farhad Manjoo in The New York Times today takes a look how Apple could improve our relationship with our iPhones. While it’s not the iPhone maker’s fault we’re so addicted to our devices, Manjoo thinks there’s an opportunity for Apple to encourage more intentional use, which would mean less use. Could there be a way to do this that’s both beneficial for users and Apple?
